Book excerpt: A smart and powerful story set in the Orthodox Jewish community about what it means to fit in, break out, and find your own way, by the award-winning author of The Life and Crimes of Hoodie Rosen. This book is Gossip Girl + My Name Is Asher Lev + I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. Yoyo Gold has always played the role of the perfect Jewish daughter. She keeps kosher, looks after her siblings, and volunteers at the local food bank. She respects the decisions of her rabbi father and encourages her friends to observe the rules of their Orthodox faith. But when she sees her best friend cast out of the community over a seemingly innocent transgression, Yoyo’s eyes are opened to the truth of her neighbors’ hypocrisies for the first time. And what she sees leaves her shocked and unmoored. As Yoyo’s frustration builds, so does the pressure to speak out, even if she can only do so anonymously on TikTok, an app that’s always been forbidden to her. But when one of her videos goes viral—and her decisions wind up impacting not only her own life but also her relationship with the boy she’s falling for—Yoyo’s world is thrown into chaos. She is forced to choose which path to take, for her community, for her family, and most importantly, for herself. Award-winning author Isaac Blum returns with a new novel that asks what it really means to be part of a community—and what it means to break free.

Book Synopsis Classical Music in a Changing World by : Lawrence Kramer
Download or read book Classical Music in a Changing World written by Lawrence Kramer and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years classical music has become a test case for debates over the future of culture. As times have changed, the value traditionally placed on this music has been challenged on social rather than aesthetic grounds. Lovers of classical music have been asked how its privileged history can be reconciled with growing demands for social justice and social inclusiveness. They have been asked how the music’s standing as one of the great accomplishments of the West can be reconciled with the many injustices on which those accomplishments in part depended. How can the future of classical music escape the darker shadows of its past? ‘Classical Music in a Changing World: Crisis and Vital Signs’ addresses the crisis provoked by such questions in two complementary ways. Several of the chapters show how the classical music world is already grappling with the crisis, and finding vital signs beyond the borders of the music’s traditional European strongholds: in Turkey from Ottoman times to the present, in Colombia, and in a Black American film. Other chapters identify areas that still need improvement, especially on behalf of female and LGBTQ+ musicians, and suggest how advances can be made both on concert stages and in schools. This volume, which opens with an introduction by Alberto Nones that contextualizes the book and outlines the main arguments of its chapters, contains an essay by Lawrence Kramer that examines the place of classical music in the history of consciousness—a history now changing rapidly—and concludes with a Postscript written by the two editors. The writing in this volume will be accessible to a wide audience, including scholars and students, professionals and amateurs, performers and listeners. Teachers will find it a source of lively classroom debate, and scholars a source of learning outside the usual arenas. The book’s “vital signs” include the accompanying audio tracks (available for download at: https://vernonpress. com/book/1281), which feature vibrant music-making from a diverse range of performers and composers.

Not only does Mason Gray look as good as he smells, he may be the only man who can love the beauty behind the beast. Book excerpt: The deaths of the Moretti’s were so imprinted on Arabella’s heart, that all she ever wanted to do was honor their memory—particularly Maria’s, and the high school prom she never got to attend. At twenty-six, Arabella did not have a typical family dynamic, nor a way to change the past. But she did have an inherited family restaurant, and a promise to God. A pledge to purity. No sooner has she settled into the planning and preparations of Rock Haven’s annual formal event, held in her family’s restaurant, Arabella receives an unexpected visit from a blue-eyed traveler, making his way to a small town in Iowa. The encounter draws Arabella’s emotions into his intrigue and charm. And charm he does. Now confronted with her grappling emotions, Arabella must choose which is more important to her—the promise she made to God? Her family’s business? Or, the stranger that has managed to captivate her heart?
