Book excerpt: A new theory in psychology with a formula: all disease obstruction, all recovery elimination, all success attraction. The three obstructions are explained in detail: people, habit and food. What messed us up? The influence of other people. With trauma we swallow them whole/mimic evil. What is the Dunning-Kruger? It's the dumb thinking they're smart--most dangerous for sure. We mal-adapt by taking on another part but through elimination we get a fresh start. Cover design by Blaze Goldburst

Book excerpt: A centaur, a selkie, and a cockatrice walked into a tavern. Things only got stranger after that, when Ipposthenes, Cara, and Pierre find a human who has stumbled into their realm and desperately needs to return to his own. Battling lake monsters, elves, and an occasional pouty sphinx, the three friends and their new human companion must find their way to the end of the world—all while pursued by a sinister creature that will stop at nothing to get its tendrils on the young man. On an adventure they never asked for, with a human that questions everything (and snores, to boot), Ipposthenes, Cara, and Pierre face down both inconceivable horrors and minor inconveniences in their trek to the Door at the End of the World. Praise for Something Epic: "Definitely a fine fantasy book. He's no Terry Pratchett, but....it's fine." -The author's partner "We're just glad that he's found a nice hobby." -The author's parents "Please, sir, there are people waiting behind you, and I don't know what a cockatrice is." -The checkout clerk at the author's grocery store

Book excerpt: Yes I Can! Yes You Can! tells the inspiring story of Jay Leeuwenburg, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age twelve and refused to allow it to prevent him from living a full, active life. Jay insisted that he be able to participate in any sports activity he chose. “To not participate,” he says, “would be like saying, ‘Don’t breathe.’” He became a unanimous All-American at the University of Colorado and played nine years in the National Football League. Jay used his NFL stardom to become a rare role model for children with diabetes. His message: Yes You Can! His example also provides hope for parents of children with diabetes, encouraging them to be supportive but not sympathetic as their youngsters learn first to cope with, and then to overcome, their lifelong disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'COMPREHENSIVE' The Sunday Times 'BEAUTIFULLY DETAILED' The Guardian 'UTTERLY COMPELLING' Nottingham Forest News 'WONDERFUL' Forbes 'INTIMATE' FourFourTwo 20th Anniversary Edition - Fully revised and updated. In this authoritative, critical biography, Jonathan Wilson draws an intimate and powerful portrait of one of England's greatest football managers, Brian Clough. It was in the unforgiving world of post-war football where his identity and reputation was made - a world where, as Clough's mentor Harry Storer once said, 'Nobody ever says thank you.' Nonetheless, Clough brought the gleam of silverware to the depressed East Midlands of the 1970s. Initial triumph at Derby was followed by a sudden departure and a traumatic 44 days at Leeds. By the end of a frazzled 1974, Clough was set up for life financially, but also hardened to the realities of football. By the time he was at Forest, Clough's mask was almost permanently donned: a persona based on brashness and conflict. Drink fuelled the controversies and the colourful character; it heightened the razor-sharp wit and was a salve for the highs of football that never lasted long enough, and for the lows that inevitably followed. Wilson's account is the definitive portrait of this complex and enduring man, whose legacy in football remains untouched to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and why do suboptimal agricultural policies persist despite technical evidence highlighting alternatives? And what explains episodes of reform after prolonged periods of policy inertia? This paper addresses these questions by applying the Kaleidoscope Model for agricultural and food security policy change to the specific case of agricultural input policy in Zambia. Since 2002, the Farmer Input Support Program (formerly the Fertilizer Support Program) has been a cornerstone of Zambia’s agricultural policy. Over the years, however, many researchers have highlighted weaknesses in the program and proposed other options. Based on semistructured interviews with key stakeholders and intensive process tracing using media, donor, parliamentary, and research reports, this paper examines how the program initially began in 2002 and during subsequent periods of reform in 2009 and 2015. Based on the findings here, periods of reform for input support programs are most likely when there is a confluence of multiple factors. These include the emergence of a window of opportunity in the form of either a focusing event (for example, a food crisis) or an institutional shift (for example, a new president or new ruling party) that coincides with broad stakeholder support for empirically grounded alternatives, available material resources, and sustained commitment from politically important policy makers.
