Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades many developing countries have embraced the challenge of globalization by rushing to dismantle trade barriers and to promote increasingly liberal market-oriented policies. However, a broader response to globalization is both necessary and possible if countries are to develop as quickly and as fully as possible. Exploring this complex interrelationship between globalization, liberalization, and human and social development, this innovative book undertakes a full analysis of development policy, strategy and practice in a variety of countries, with equal weight provided to Asia, Latin America and Africa. An internationally renowned team of contributors examines the complex network of connections and the implications for international development policy, strategy and practice. Advocating the inclusion of sustainable human development as a key element in countries' responses to globalization, key points highlighted include the need to nurture an enabling environment, and to promote education and R&D. These elements, coupled with sound macroeconomic management, are all required in equipping a country to integrate more effectively into the world economy. This innovative new approach to globalization and development set out in this volume will be essential reading for academics and practitioners alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edited volume fourteen scholars, mostly from Latin America, analyze the current state of relations between North America and Latin America in a number of sectors - economic, security, politics, and the environment. Particular attention is paid to processes of economic integration that dominated political discussions during the decade of the 1990s - NAFTA, MERCOSUR, the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA). Because most of the scholars are from Latin America, the book has a perspective that is often lacking in books on similar scholars written almost exclusively by scholars from the U.S.

Book excerpt: Insecure, unclear or non-existent property rights explain why poor people suffer from or cause environmental degradation. By better defining property rights, poverty can be alleviated and the environment improved. Governments have a special responsibility to provide corrective action in the presence of negative externalities because only governments can establish and enforce legal frameworks for regulating the use of environmental resources. Moreover, governments transfer resources between different social groups placing them in a unique position to eradicate poverty. Unidirectional negative externalities are particularly anti-poor, because the poor tend to be the victims. Subsidies to energy, agricultural inputs and many other potentially environmentally hazardous activities are unjustified not only because of their negative economic impact but also for environmental and poverty reasons. Many country and local case studies show that local communities loose resources to powerful, outside-the-community groups. Governments need to reverse this and support instead the management of common property resources. They also need to change the property regimes of de facto and de jure open-access resources. In both cases, justification lies in the higher sustainable yield on natural assets and in the reduction of poverty.
