Book excerpt: The Speech Writer is a fictional documentary presented in the form of ten flip books (6 x 12 cm) in a slipcase. The contents follow a day in the life of a retired political speech writer. Surrounded by the memories of his family and his vast collection of speeches, he is a creature of habit, idiosyncratic behaviour and reclusive existence. Retired from a lifetime of public service work, his connection with the outside world takes the form of a daily broadcast from the comfort of his home. Passersby, now accustomed to the perplexing array of loudspeakers wired to the outside of his house, stop to listen for a few moments each day. We cannot hear him speak but witness instead a moment of ultimate freedom in the life of a man who formulated the rhetoric, visions, dreams and declarations of others.

Book excerpt: Archivists and archival institutions are reappraising and deaccessioning now more than ever before. Archival reappraisal and deaccessioning have become vital tools for managing archival collections. Reappraisal and Deaccessioning in Archives and Special Collections is the first book dedicated entirely to the topic of reappraising and deaccessioning in special collections and archives. This edited volume features 13 chapters offering informed opinions, practical recommendations, and valuable examples for reappraising and deaccessioning. Readers will gain important insight into the most important element of reappraisal and deaccessioning: decision-making. Through mostly case studies, the chapters address important issues inherent in these practices including: ethical concerns, donor relations, appraisal questions, and disposition options. The case studies cover collaborative and solo projects, various material types such as manuscripts, records, and artifacts, and a range of scenarios from major projects involving thousands of linear feet of material to ad hoc projects removing single items. Chapter topics include: weeding vs. deaccessioning, getting rid of contaminated materials, donor-driven deaccessioning, and using reappraisal and deaccessioning to improve access to existing collections. Readers will find beneficial information on streamlining workflows, carrying out procedures, creating policies, and implementing these practices locally. Additionally, the chapters cover the intricacies of disposition options, such as transferring to other institutions, returning material to donors, and destruction. This volume can serve as a valuable resource for large and small repositories, experienced and novice archivists, and those working with manuscript and archive collections.

Download or read book Imagined Realism written by The Amon Carter Museum of American Art and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major publication on the art and lives of twentieth-century Fort Worth artists Scott (1942–2011) and Stuart (1942–2006) Gentling. Prolific modern-day Renaissance men, the brothers created an extensive body of landscapes; portraits of regional and national luminaries; historical studies ranging from a visual reconstruction of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan to subjects drawn from the French and American Revolutions; and natural history illustrations of the flora and fauna of Texas. Realist painters, they drew inspiration from past masters such as Jacques-Louis David and John James Audubon, and they corresponded and collaborated with contemporaries such as Andrew Wyeth and Ed Ruscha. The Gentling brothers’ place within the canon of twentieth-century American art is established here. Along with 290 images, including 120 plates, the book includes five essays, two by scholars Erika Doss of the University of Notre Dame and Barbara Mundy of Fordham University; a trio of Carter museum curators provide deep analyses of the Gentlings’ artistic process, the output of their fifty-year career, and a chronology of their lives; plus several brief and incisive takes on specific aspects of the brothers’ multifaceted art and lives are featured throughout.
