Book excerpt: Nous abordons ici la thématique des opérateurs et processeurs flot de données dédiés au traitement d'images et orientés vers la morphologie mathématique. L'objectif principal est de proposer des architectures performantes capables de réaliser les opérations simples de ce corpus mathématique afin de proposer des opérateurs morphologiques avancés. Ces dernières années, des algorithmes astucieux ont été proposés avec comme objectif de réduire la quantité des calculs nécessaires à la réalisation de transformations telle que la ligne de partage des eaux. Toutefois, les mises en œuvre proposées font souvent appel à des structures de données complexes qui sont difficiles à employer sur des machines différentes des processeurs généralistes monocœurs. Les processeurs standard poursuivant aujourd'hui leur évolution vers une augmentation du parallélisme, ces implémentations ne nous permettent pas d'obtenir les gains de performance escomptés à chaque nouvelle génération de machine. Nous proposons alors des mises en œuvre rapides des opérations complexes de la morphologie mathématique par des machines exploitant fortement le parallélisme intrinsèque des opérations basiques. Nous étudions dans une première partie les processeurs de voisinage travaillant directement sur un flot de pixels et nous proposons différentes méthodologies de conception rapide de pipelines dédiés à une application. Nous proposons également une structure de pipeline programmable via l'utilisation de processeurs vectoriels avec différentes possibilités de chaînage. Enfin, une étude avec des machines est proposée afin d'observer la pertinence de notre approche

Book excerpt: Cette thèse est consacrée aux algorithmes de morphologie mathématique qui peuvent considérer les pixels d'une image comme un flux de données. Nous allons démontrer qu'un grand nombre d'algorithmes de morphologie mathématique peuvent être décrits comme un flux de données traversant des unités d'exécution. Nous verrons que cette approche peut aussi fonctionner sur des processeurs génériques possédant un jeu d'instructions multimédia ou sur des cartes graphiques. Pour décrire les algorithmes en flux de données, nous proposons d'utiliser le langage fonctionnel Haskell, ce qui nous permettra de décrire les briques de base de la construction des algorithmes de morphologie mathématique. On applique ces briques dans la description des algorithmes les plus couramment utilisés (dilatation/érosion, opérations géodésiques, fonction distance et nivellements) ce qui facilitera le portage de ces algorithmes sur plusieurs plate-formes. Nous proposons pour la construction des algorithmes morphologiques un mode d'exécution original par macro blocs et nous étudions en profondeur la transposition de cette idée aux architectures SIMD. Nous montrons que l'utilisation des macro blocs est intéressante pour les architectures multimédia et nous montrons également que les algorithmes morphologiques proposés dans cette thèse atteignent de meilleures performances que les implémentations standard. Un nouveau champ s'ouvre ainsi aux algorithmes développés dans les applications de traitement d'images en temps réel. Cette thèse explore également les processeurs graphiques et démontre sur des résultats expérimentaux qu'ils sont, dès à présent, assez performants pour concurrencer les processeurs généraux.

La segmentation et l'analyse d'images dans un contexte clinique reste un problème majeur de l'imagerie médicale. La multiplicité des modalités d'imagerie, ainsi que les fortes variabilités des structures et pathologies à analyser rendent cette tâche fastidieuse. Dans la plupart des cas, la supervision de spécialistes, tels que des radiologistes, est nécessaire pour valider ou interpréter les résultats obtenus par analyse d'images. L'importante quantité de données, ainsi que les nombreuses applications liées à l'imagerie médicale, nécessitent des outils logiciels de très haut niveau combinant des interfaces graphique complexe avec des algorithmes interactifs rapides. Les récentes recherches en segmentation d'images ont montré l'intérêt des méthodes à base de graphes. L'intérêt suscité dans la communauté scientifique a permis de développer et d'utiliser rapidement ces techniques dans de nombreuses applications. Nous avons étudié les arbres de recouvrement minimaux, les coupes minimales ainsi que les arbres de chemins les plus courts. Notre étude a permis de mettre en lumière des liens entre ces structures a priori très différentes. Nous avons prouvé que les forêts des chemins les plus courts, ainsi que les coupes minimales convergent toutes les deux, en appliquant une transformation spécifique du graphe, vers une structure commune qui n'est autre qu'une forêt de recouvrement minimale. Cette étude nous a aussi permis de souligner les limitations et les possibilités de chacune de ces techniques pour la segmentation d'images. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons proposé des avancées théoriques et pratiques sur l'utilisation des coupe minimales. Cette structure est particulièrement intéressante pour segmenter des images à partir de minimisation d'énergie. D'une part, nous avons montré que l'utilisation de graphes de régions d'une segmentation morphologique permet d'accélérer les méthodes de segmentation à base de coupe minimales. D'autre part nous avons montré que l'utilisation de graphes de régions permet d'étendre la classe d'énergie pouvant être minimisée par coupe de graphes. Ces techniques ont toutes les caractéristiques pour devenir des méthodes de référence pour la segmentation d'images médicales. Nous avons alors étudié qualitativement et quantitativement nos méthodes de segmentation à travers des applications médicales. Nous avons montré que nos méthodes sont particulièrement adaptées à la détection de tumeurs pour la planification de radiothérapie, ainsi que la création de modèles pour la simulation et la planification de chirurgie cardiaque. Nous avons aussi mené une étude quantitative sur la segmentation de tumeurs du foie. Cette étude montre que nos algorithmes offrent des résultats plus stables et plus précis que de nombreuses techniques de l'état de l'art. Nos outils ont aussi été comparés à des segmentations manuelles de radiologistes, prouvant que nos techniques sont adaptées à être utilisée en routine clinique. Nous avons aussi revisité une méthode classique de segmentation d'images : la ligne de partages des eaux. La contribution de notre travail se situe dans la re-définition claire de cette transformation dans le cas des graphes et des images multi spectrales. Nous avons utilisé les algèbres de chemins pour montrer que la ligne de partages des eaux correspond à des cas particuliers de forêt des chemins les plus courts dans un graphe. Finalement, nous proposons quelques extensions intéressantes du problème des coupes minimales. Ces extensions sont basées sur l'ajout de nouveaux types de contraintes. Nous considérons particulièrement les coupes minimales contraintes à inclure un ensemble prédéfini d'arrêtes, ainsi que les coupes minimales contraintes par leur cardinalité et leur aires. Nous montrons comment ces problèmes peuvent être avantageusement utilisé pour la segmentation d'images.

Book excerpt: This book deals with a wide class of novel and efficient adaptive signal processing techniques developed to restore signals from noisy and degraded observations. These signals include those acquired from still or video cameras, electron microscopes, radar, X-rays, or ultrasound devices, and are used for various purposes, including entertainment, medical, business, industrial, military, civil, security, and scientific. In many cases useful information and high quality must be extracted from the imaging. However, often raw signals are not directly suitable for this purpose and must be processed in some way. Such processing is called signal reconstruction. This book is devoted to a recent and original approach to signal reconstruction based on combining two independent ideas: local polynomial approximation and the intersection of confidence interval rule.

Book excerpt: Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his death (August 27, 2015), one of Le Corbusier's most significant books becomes available again in English. We are doing a reprint of MIT Press's first edition of 1991, which again is based on the original French version of 1930, with an introduction added by the author in 1960. While the MIT Press version had black-and-white illustrations throughout, Park Books' new edition features some of Le Corbusier's drawings in color as they were in the earlier French editions. A new essay by British scholar Tim Benton, written for this new edition, contextualizes the book within Le Corbusier's oeuvre and comments on its lasting significance. An also new appendix explains specialist terms and provides background information on persons and historic events no longer necessarily known to a younger generation of architects. The Precisions, as the book is known commonly, emerged from a spontaneous and exuberant series of 10 lectures Le Corbusier gave in Buenos Aires during the fall of 1929. As he spoke, Le Corbusier improvised drawings on large sheets of paper with crayons. While similar drawings appear in other works, here all the lectures and images appear in their original context as Le Corbusier assembled them more than 80 years ago. The texts reflect a new maturity in Le Corbusier's thinking and an extreme confidence in the development of his ideas. The drawings and lectures are unique in their eloquent and concise summary of his philosophy of architecture and urban design, stating the principles that informed his work from the 1920s on. They contain some of his most compelling aphorisms, both verbal and visual, covering technique as the basis of architecture, the human scale in design, furniture, the private house, apartments and office buildings, the city, the League of Nations competition, teaching architecture, and a splendid analysis of the transformation of his own work in houses from La Roche-Jeanneret to the Villa Savoye.
