Today, the optical spectrum of a fiber is divided using wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) into optical channels of 50 GHz or 100 GHz. This fixed grid will not be able to efficiently support higher bit-rate transponders (namely, at 400 Gbps and 1 Tbps). Moreover, innovative elastic transponders capable of tuning their data rates by choosing appropriate modulation formats or spectrum width are also being investigated. To exploit the capabilities of elastic transponders and to fit transponders at beyond-100 Gbps rates, the conventional fixed grid has to evolve towards a flexible grid, where an arbitrary number of finer frequency slots (e.g., at 12.5 GHz) can be assigned to serve the client demands. At the same time of the disruptive development of the optical layer, two trends in the general networking/IT fields are prominent: 1. Vertical convergence: convergence of multiple layers of the network stack, e.g., packet and circuit (optical) convergence; 2. Horizontal convergence: convergence of computing, storage, and networking resources, e.g., cloud networking, and information-centric networking (ICN). Hence, we are motivated to study how to adapt the architecture, operation, and services of flexible-grid elastic optical networks to the two prominent trends. For vertical packet/optical convergence, we study dynamic traffic grooming in elastic optical networks. We propose to jointly solve the electrical-layer routing and optical-layer routing and spectrum assignment (RSA). Also, we propose a spectrum reservation scheme that can efficiently utilize the bandwidth variability of lightpaths, reducing operational expenditure (OPEX) as well as increasing spectrum efficiency. We also propose a provisioning policy exploring grooming opportunities both in time and frequency domains in order to achieve high energy efficiency. We review the evolution of traffic-grooming paradigm. Sliceable optical layer based on sliceable transponders and bandwidth-variable reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (BV-ROADM) is identified as a novel technology that could impact the future grooming paradigm by offloading considerable amount of traffic and part of electronic grooming function to the optical layer. We propose two novel network architectures based on sliceable optical layer and their optimal designs. It is found that packet over sliceable (PoS) network architecture consumes the fewest transponders and at the same time achieves either the "lowest-possible" latency or least spectrum usage. We also propose a new dense-wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM)-centric converged metro/aggregation network, which reduces the usage of electronic packet processing, hence significantly reducing the corresponding OPEX. Both Integer Linear Program (ILP) and heuristics are proposed to address the complex network design problems involving two layers of routing (fiber routing and wavelength routing), wavelength assignment, and survivable design. For horizontal convergence, we investigate how to jointly allocate computing, storage, and networking resources for virtual infrastructures in the problems of network virtualization over both WDM and flexible-grid optical networks. We formulate the problems as mixed integer linear programs (MILP) and propose two heuristics, namely MaxMapping and MinMapping. Numerical examples show that MinMapping performs very close to the optimal results derived by the MILP in both kinds of optical networks, by exploring traffic grooming. Also, it is verified that flexible-grid optical networks can be more spectrum efficient than WDM networks as the substrate for network virtualization. Also, for large service providers (SP) who own their computing, storage, and networking resources, we propose to orchestrate their cache and networking resources in a coordinated way to solve their traffic-engineering (TE) and cache-orchestration (CO) problems in an ICN-enabled networking infrastructure using service popularity. We propose to deal with the joint problems at the service level, in which no specific information about individual contents of services is needed. Numerical results show that our proposed TE and CO schemes can significantly reduce network cost and increase cache hit ratio, with the constraints of satisfying service-level agreements (SLA).

Book excerpt: New generation applications, such as cloud computing or video distribution, can run in a telecom cloud infrastructure where the datacenters (DCs) of telecom operators are integrated in their networks thus, increasing connections' dynamicity and resulting in time-varying traffic capacities, which might also entail changes in the traffic direction along the day. As a result, a flexible optical technology able to dynamically set-up variable-capacity connections, such as flexgrid, is needed. Nonetheless, network dynamicity might entail network performance degradation thus, requiring re-optimizing the network while it is in operation. This thesis is devoted to devise new algorithms to solve in-operation network planning problems aiming at enhancing the performance of optical networks and at studying their feasibility in experimental environments. In-operation network planning requires from an architecture enabling the deployment of algorithms that must be solved in stringent times. That architecture can be based on a Path Computation Element (PCE) or a Software Defined Networks controller. In this thesis, we assume the former split in a front-end PCE, in charge of provisioning paths and handling network events, and a specialized planning tool in the form of a back-end PCE responsible for solving in-operation planning problems. After the architecture to support in-operation planning is assessed, we focus on studying the following applications: 1) Spectrum fragmentation is one of the most important problems in optical networks. To alleviate it to some extent without traffic disruption, we propose a hitless spectrum defragmentation strategy. 2) Each connection affected by a failure can be recovered using multiple paths to increase traffic restorability at the cost of poor resource utilization. We propose re-optimizing the network after repairing the failure to aggregate and reroute those connections to release spectral resources. 3) We study two approaches to provide multicast services: establishing a point-to-multipoint connections at the optical layer and using multi-purpose virtual network topologies (VNT) to serve both unicast and multicast connectivity requests. 4) The telecom cloud infrastructure, enables placing contents closer to the users. Based on it, we propose a hierarchical content distribution architecture where VNTs permanently interconnect core DCs and metro DCs periodically synchronize contents to the core DCs. 5) When the capacity of the optical backbone network becomes exhausted, we propose using a planning tool with access to inventory and operation databases to periodically decide the equipment and connectivity to be installed at the minimum cost reducing capacity overprovisioning. 6) In multi-domain multi-operator scenarios, a broker on top of the optical domains can provision multi-domain connections. We propose performing intra-domain spectrum defragmentation when no contiguous spectrum can be found for a new connection request. 7) Packet nodes belonging to a VNT can collect and send incoming traffic monitoring data to a big data repository. We propose using the collected data to predict next period traffic and to adapt the VNT to future conditions. The methodology followed in this thesis consists in proposing a problem statement and/or a mathematical formulation for the problems identified and then, devising algorithms for solving them. Those algorithms are simulated and then, they are experimentally assessed in real test-beds. This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of performing in-operation planning in optical networks, shows that it enhances the performance of the network and validates the feasibility of its deployment in real networks. It shall be mentioned that part of the work reported in this thesis has been done within the framework of several research projects, namely IDEALIST (FP7-ICT-2011-8) and GEANT (238875) funded by the EC and SYNERGY (TEC2014-59995-R) funded by the MINECO.

Book excerpt: The ever increasing IP traffic volume has finally brought to light the high inefficiency of current wavelength-routed over rigid-grid optical networks in matching the client layer requirements. Such an issue results in the deployment of large-size, expensive and power-consuming Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) layers to perform the required grooming/aggregation functionality. To deal with this problem, the emerging flexgrid technology, allowing for reduced size frequency grids, is being standardized. Flexgrid optical networks divide the spectrum into frequency slots providing finer granularity than rigid networks based on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). To find a feasible allocation, new Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) algorithms for flexgrid optical networks need to be designed and evaluated. Furthermore, due to the flexibility of flexible optical networks, the aggregation functions and statistical multiplexing can be partially located in the optical layer. In addition, given the special characteristics of flexible optical networks, the traditional mechanisms for protection and recovery must be reformulated. Optical transport platforms are designed to facilitate the setting up and tearing down of optical connections (lightpaths). Combining remotely configurable optical cross-connects (OXCs) with a control plane provides the capability of automated lightpath set-up for regular provisioning, and real-time reaction to the failures, being thus able to reduce Operational Expenditures (OPEX). However, to exploit existing capacity, increase dynamicity, and provide automation in future networks, current management architectures, utilizing legacy Network Management Systems (NMS) need to be radically transformed. This thesis is devoted to design optical networks and to devise algorithms to operate them. Network design objective consists of: i.Analyzing the cost implications that a set of frequency slot widths have on the Capital Expenditures (CAPEX) investments required to deploy MPLS-over-flexgrid networks; ii.Studying recovery schemes, where a new recovery scheme specifically designed for flexgrid-based optical networks is proposed. As for network operation, we focus on: i.Studying provisioning, where two provisioning algorithms are proposed: the first one targets at solving the RSA problem in flexgrid networks, whereas the second one studies provisioning considering optical impairments in translucent DWDM networks; ii.Getting back to the recovery problem, we focus on algorithms to cope with restoration in dynamic scenarios. Several algorithms are proposed for both single layer and multilayer networks to be deployed in the centralized Path Computation Element (PCE); iii.One of the main problems in flexgrid networks is spectrum defragmentation. In view of that, we propose an algorithm to reallocate already established optical connections so as to make room for incoming requests. This algorithm is extended with elasticity to deal with time-varying traffic. The above algorithms are firstly implemented and validated by using simulation, and finally experimentally assessed in real test-beds. In view of PCE architectures do not facilitate network reconfiguration, we propose a control and management architecture to allow the network to be dynamically operated; network resources can be made available by reconfiguring and/or re-optimizing the network on demand and in real-time. We call that as in-operation network planning. It shall be mentioned that part of the work reported in this thesis has been done within the framework of several European and National projects, namely STRONGEST (FP7-247674), IDEALIST (FP7-ICT-2011-8), and GEANT (FP7-238875) funded by the European Commission, and ENGINE (TEC2008-02634) and ELASTIC (TEC2011-27310) funded by the Spanish Science Ministry.

There is however increasing complexity of the physical models compounded by a lack of precise knowledge of their parameters, as well as new uncertainties arising from behavioral, economic, and environmental aspects. On the other hand there is increasing availability of sensory data in the engineering and economic operations and it becomes attractive to leverage such data to model, monitor, analyze, and potentially close control loops over data. The increasing deployment of large numbers of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) provides the potential for providing timely and actionable information about the transmission system. Chapter 2 examines a framework for drastically reducing the dimensionality of the high volume streaming data, while preserving its salient features for purposes such as event detection, classification and visualization, and potentially even to close the loop around the data. Driven by the deepening penetration of renewable energy resources at both transmission and distribution levels, there is an increasing need for utilizing power electronics interfaces as intelligent devices to benefit the overall grid. Chapter 3 offers a conceptual design and concrete examples of a qualitatively different power grid stabilization mechanism in the context of networked microgrids. Another major paradigm change in the operation of the grid is that demand will have to be engaged much more to balance the partially variable renewable energy supply, which in turn requires greater understanding of human behavior to economic variables such as price. Chapter 4 presents a possible formulation to model the behavior of individual consumers in future grid operations. Applications for streaming video, social networking and cloud computing, are driving exponential growth of the traffic carried over the world's ICT networks, which has been sustained thus far through the proliferation of datacenters and efficient, effective use of existing optical fibre. To meet increasing capacity demands requires increasingly sophisticated modulation formats and spectral management to achieve effective use of the available spectrum provided by an optical fibre. Moreover, the technology developed for optical communications is finding broader application to other sectors such as data centres, 5&6 G wireless; lidar and radar. Ultimately, some essential signal processing functions must occur at speeds beyond purely electronic means even when accounting for anticipated technological development. The option is to perform signal processing in the optical domain. Optical signal processors are fundamentally analog and linear in nature. To provide high performance, an analogue processor must be well controlled in a way analogous to the numerous and sophisticated controllers employed by the process industry. Consequently, a further extension of control to deeper levels within the physical layer reaching the optical layer will be necessary. For example, current reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers are coloured and directional and the wavelength division multiplexing channel grid, transponders modulation format, and the routing are all fixed. Through optimization of the interface between the physical components, sensors, and processors elastic optical network technology can be achieved by employing colour-, direction-, contention-, grid-less, filter-, gap-less reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers, flexible channels centre frequencies and width, flexible sub-carriers in super-channels, flexible modulation formats and forward error control coding transponders, and impairment-aware wavelength routing and spectral assignment. The aim of this thesis is to advance the state-of-the-art in photonic circuits and subsystems via proposing new architecture; study of the feasibility of photonic integration and, proof of concept implementations using available resources. The goal is to introduce new architectural concepts that make effective use of physical components and/or optical processors with reduced energy consumption, reduced footprint and offer speed beyond all-electronic implementations. The thesis presents four case studies based on one or more published papers and supplementary material that advance the goal of the thesis. The first study presents a coherent electro-optic circuit architecture that generates N spatially distinct phase-correlated harmonically related carriers using a generalized Mach-Zehnder Interferometer with its N×1 combiner replaced by an N×N optical Discrete Fourier Transform. The architecture subsumes all Mach-Zehnder Interferometer-based architectures in the prior art given an appropriate selection of output port(s) and dimension N, although the principal application envisaged is phase-correlated subcarrier generation for next-generation optical transmission systems. The theoretical prediction is then verified experimentally using laboratory available photonic integrated circuit fabricated for other applications. Later on, a novel extension of the circuit architecture is introduced by replacing the optical Discrete Fourier Transform network using the combination of a properly chosen phase shifter and single MMI coupler. The second study proposes two novel architectures for an on-chip ultra-high-resolution panoramic spectrometer and presents their design, analysis, integration feasibility, and verification by simulation. The target application is to monitor the power of a wavelength division multiplexed signals in both fixed and flex grid over entire C-band with minimum scan time and better than 1 GHz frequency accuracy. The two architectures combine in synchrony a scanning comb filter stage and channelized coarse filter. The fine filtering is obtained using a ring resonator while the coarse filtering is obtained using an arrayed waveguide grating with appropriate configuration. The fully coherent first architecture is optimised for compactness but relies on a repeatable fabrication processes to match the optical path lengths between a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a multiple input arrayed waveguide grating. The second architecture is less compact than the first but is robust to fabrication tolerances as it does not require the path length matching. The third study proposes a new circuit architecture for single sideband modulation or frequency conversion which employs a cascade Mach-Zehnder modulator architecture departing from the orthodox dual parallel solution. The theoretical analysis shows that the circuit has 3-dB optical and 3-dB electrical advantage over the orthodox solution. The 3-dB electrical advantage increases the linear operating range of Mach-Zehnder modulator before RF amplifier saturation. An experimental verification of the proposed architecture is provided using an available photonic integrated circuit. The proposed circuit can also perform complex modulation. An alternative implementation based on polarization modulators is also described. The fourth study presents the theoretical modelling of a photonic generation of broadband radio frequency phase shifter. The proposed phase shifter can generate any phase without bound: the complex transmission of the phase shifter follows a trajectory that rotates on a unit circle and may encircle the origin any number of times in either direction, which has great utility in the tuning of RF-photonic systems. The proposed concept is then verified experimentally using off the shelf low frequency electronic components.

Book excerpt: The ever demanding bandwidth requirements for supporting emerging telecom services such as ultra-high-definition video streaming, cloud computing, connected car, virtual/augmented reality, etc., bring to the fore the necessity to upgrade continuously the technology behind transport networks in order to keep pace with this exponential traffic growth. Thus, everything seems to indicate that fixed-grid Wavelength-Division Multiplexed (WDM) networks will be upgraded by adopting a flexible-grid, thus providing finer bandwidth allocation granularities, and therefore, increasing the Grade-of-Service by packing more information in the same spectral band of standard Single-Mode Fibers (SMFs). Nevertheless, unfortunately, the fundamental Shannon's limit of SMFs is rapidly approaching, and, then, the research efforts to increase the SMFs' capacity will be useless. One solution to overcome this capacity crunch effect is to enable one extra dimension in addition to the frequency one, namely, the spatial dimension, thus deploying S parallel paths in order to multiply, in the best case, by S the capacity of SMF-based networks. However, additionally, it is necessary to decrease the cost and energy per bit in order to provide economically attractive solutions. For this purpose, a smooth upgrade path has to be carried out as new integrated devices and system components are developed for Space Division Multiplexing (SDM). This thesis is concentrated on the planning and operation of the combined flexible WDM and SDM networks (i.e., Flex-Grid/SDM networks) proposing several strategies aimed at optimizing network resources usage with hardware complexity analysis. For this purpose, firstly, network problems are carefully studied and stated, and then, mathematical and/or heuristic algorithms are designed and implemented in an optical network simulator. Specifically, after an introduction to the thesis, chapter 2 presents the background and related work. Next, chapter 3 concentrates on the study of spatially fixed Flex-Grid/SDM networks, i.e., when a rigid number of spatial channels are reserved per allocated traffic demand. In its turn, chapter 4 studies the case of Spectrally-Spatially Flexible Optical Networks (SS-FONs), as the ones providing the upper-bound network capacity. Costs and hardware requirements implied on providing this flexibility are analyzed. Network nodes aimed at reducing the cost of SS-FONs are presented and evaluated in chapter 5. Finally, this thesis ends with the presentation of the main contributions and future research work in chapter 6.
