Book Synopsis Everyday Life Matters by : Cynthia Robin
Download or read book Everyday Life Matters written by Cynthia Robin and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the study of ancient civilizations has often focused on holy temples and royal tombs, a substantial part of the archaeological record remains hidden in the understudied day-to-day lives of artisans, farmers, hunters, and other ordinary people of the ancient world. The various chores of a person's daily life can be quite extraordinary and, even though they may seem trivial, such activities can have a powerful effect on society as a whole. Everyday Life Matters develops general methods and theories for studying everyday life applicable in archaeology, anthropology, and a wide range of disciplines. In this groundbreaking work, Cynthia Robin examines the 2,000-year history (800 B.C.-A.D. 1200) of the ancient farming community of Chan in Belize, explaining why the average person should matter to archaeologists studying larger societal patterns. Robin argues that the impact of what is commonly perceived as habitual or quotidian can be substantial, and a study of a polity without regard to the citizenry is woefully incomplete. She also develops general methods and theories for studying everyday life applicable across a wide range of disciplines. Refocusing attention from the Maya elite and offering critical analysis of daily life interwoven with larger anthropological theories, Robin engages us to consider the larger implications of the seemingly mundane and to rethink the constitution of human societies, everyday life, and ordinary people.
Book Synopsis Archaeological Investigations of the Lower Dover Periphery, Cayo District, Belize, Central America by : Michael Louis Petrozza
Download or read book Archaeological Investigations of the Lower Dover Periphery, Cayo District, Belize, Central America written by Michael Louis Petrozza and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gordon Willey pioneered settlement archaeology in the Virú Valley of Peru. While working with the Peabody in the 1950’s he most notably applied this methodology at the Maya site of Barton Ramie. Barton Ramie was uncharacteristically devoid of an administrative center, making the site appear to be an autonomous residential community and thus a suitable subject for his research. For many years, Willey and subsequent researchers excluded another site that lay directly south of the Belize River, Lower Dover. Research of the Lower Dover settlement took place in the 2013 and 2014 archaeology field seasons. The investigations into the settlement focused on a 2 kilometer radius around the Lower Dover administrative center. This study seeks to elucidate weather Lower Dover served as the administrative center of Barton Ramie. However at the present the chronology of Lower Dover is unknown. There is currently no evidence of early construction in the site core.

Book Synopsis An Archaeological Reconstruction of Ancient Maya Life at Pacbitun, Belize by : Terry G. Powis
Download or read book An Archaeological Reconstruction of Ancient Maya Life at Pacbitun, Belize written by Terry G. Powis and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the results of 35 years of archaeological research at the Maya site of Pacbitun, located in west central Belize. The site was continuously occupied from 900 BC to AD 800/900. Excavations focused on both the site core and periphery, with investigations centred around housemounds, workshops, causeways, caves, and other karst features. In the site core, we excavated at areas ranging from small domestic houses dating to the Middle Preclassic to large ceremonial architecture (e.g. courtyards, palaces, temples) and complexes (e.g. E Groups) dating to the Late/Terminal Classic periods. From a material culture perspective, we conducted extensive research on ancient Maya use of plants, animals, ground stone tools, musical instruments, and ceramics.
