Book Synopsis Place Names of Hawaii by : Mary Kawena Pukui
Download or read book Place Names of Hawaii written by Mary Kawena Pukui and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1976-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many place names are there in the Hawaiian Islands? Even a rough estimate is impossible. Hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. And place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. It is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while Hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. And, whatever the fate of the Hawaiian language, the place names will endure. The first edition of Place Names of Hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. The coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in English. Also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the Atlas of Hawaii.

This book was released on 1959-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A valuable library addition for either a folklorist, a linguist, or an ethnologist." --Western Folklore "The stories in this book are reprinted from Volumes IV and V of The Fornander Collection of Hawaiian Antiquities and Folk-lore, published by the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in 1917, 1918, and 1919. They include some of the best-loved of Hawaiian stories, and the collection is probably the most important work on a traditional subject ever published in the Hawaiian language.... In the 1860s and 1870s, Abraham Fornander, circuit judge of Maui, employed several Hawaiians to seek out learned Hawaiians and write down their stories. The collectors included S. N. Kamakau, S. Haleole, and Kepelino Keauokalani, each of whom has made important contributions to our knowledge of the old culture." -from the Introduction

Although retelling myths and legends, the book is sort of an account of Hawaiian history until the times of Kalākaua. It reveals facts related to the waves of migration from Samoa and other places in Polynesia, and the interaction between them and the inhabitants of the Hawaii islands. It also recounts their wars and their political organization in addition to a brief look at the social organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some 1,500 years ago, Polynesian seafarers discovered and settled the Hawaiian Islands, spawning a culture that flourished in isolation until Europeans arrived in the late eighteenth century. Pre-contact Hawaiian civilization is represented by a rich legacy of archaeological sites, many of which have been preserved and are accessible to the public. This volume provides for the first time an authoritative handbook to the most important of those archaeological treasures." "The fifty sites covered in this book are distributed over all of the main islands and include heiau (temples), habitation sites, irrigated and dryland agricultural complexes, fishponds, petroglyphs, and several post-contact (early nineteenth-century) sites. Site locations are shown on individual island maps, and detailed plans are provided for several sites."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Book Synopsis Archaeological Investigations in Upland Kaneohe by : Paul Harmer Rosendahl
Download or read book Archaeological Investigations in Upland Kaneohe written by Paul Harmer Rosendahl and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1972 to 1976, the Department of Anthropology, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, conducted several archaeological projects in connection with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Kaneohe-Kailua Flood-Control Project. The objectives of the successive archaeological projects were simply: the identification and preliminary evaluation of archaeological resources present within the project area; more intensive recording and testing of specific sites, to evaluate significance and to determine potential for yeilding important information through any recommended subsequent work; and complete salvage of the single prehistoric site, as the appropriate mitigation for the adverse effect of sire destruction by planned dam construction. In most instances, a project scope of work was based on recommendations derived from the findings of the previous project.
