Book excerpt: Studies in Contemporary and Historical Archaeology 3 This study uses the perspectives of what might be termed the 'empirical tradition' of British landscape archaeology that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in industrial archaeology, to explore the early modern history of the 'garden' landscapes formed by British colonialism in the eastern Caribbean, and their place in the world. It presents a detailed chronological sequence of the changing material conditions of these English-/British-owned plantation landscapes during the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, with particular reference to the origins, history and legacies of the sugar industry. The study draws together the results of archaeological fieldwork and documentary research to present a progressive account of the historical landscapes of the islands of St Kitts and St Lucia: sketching a chronological outline of landscape change. This approach to landscape is characterised by the integration of archaeological field survey, standing buildings recording alongside documentary and cartographic sources, and focuses upon producing accounts of material change to landscapes and buildings. By providing a long-term perspective on eastern Caribbean colonial history: from the nature of early, effectively prehistoric contact and interaction in the 16th century, through early permanent European settlements and into the developed sugar societies of the 18th and 19th centuries, the study suggests a temporal and thematic framework of landscape change that might inform the further development of historical archaeology in the island Caribbean region. The broader aim of the study relates to exploring how archaeological techniques can be used to contribute a highly detailed, empirical case study to the interdisciplinary study of postcolonial landscapes and British colonialism. In order to achieve this goal, the study draws upon the techniques of what has been called the 'empirical tradition' of landscape archaeology.

Book excerpt: Monacans and Miners sheds new light on the indigenous and immigrant communities of southern Appalachia by comparing the political, economic, and social experiences of the Monacans, a historically significant Native American group in Amherst County, Virginia, with those of Scottish and Irish settlers who made their home in Wyoming County, West Virginia, in the late eighteenth century. The Monacans are the descendants of a powerful people who both fought and traded with the Powhatan Indians. As a tide of English settlers swept through Virginia and continued west, some Monacans took refuge in the Blue Ridge Mountains. For the next few centuries the Monacans, like some other Native American groups in the Southeast, were legally classified as black and not permitted to vote or hold office. Many were also forced into indentured servitude, laboring in apple orchards for large landowners. Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic resurgence of Monacan ethnic and political identity and independence. They have won legal recognition as a tribe, collaborated with local universities to document their history, and worked to create a tribal museum. Samuel R. Cook tells the story of the Monacans in a uniquely comparative way. Book excerpt: Roots of Sedentism takes the reader to one of the most inadequately understood points of cultural transformation in prehistory: the origins of settled village life and the origins of a dynamic culture in the American Southwest, the Hohokam. The results of large-scale excavations at Valencia Vieja, a pristine early village in the southern Tucson Basin founded in the fifth century is presented. Occupied for no more than 275 years, the village was left untouched until archaeologists began excavation. Estimated to have over 400 pit structures, Valencia Vieja residential, activity, and refuse zones were arranged in concentric rings around a central plaza that contained a probable cemetery. Comprehensive testing and extensive horizontal excavations resulted in an unusually complete picture of village structure and growth. A sequence of rebuilding episodes is documented, detailing the impacts of aggregation and early sociopolitical developments. Radiocarbon dates, house-rebuilding sequences, and key artifacts provided strong dating control and permitted comparison with similarly dated remains elsewhere in the Hohokam region of southern Arizona. The rise of maintained aggregation, residential permanence, and the establishment of permanent ritual facilities were key factors in the growth of Hohokam Culture. This volume has much to offer for scholars interested in the effects of sedentism and aggregation in agricultural societies and is a boon to Hohokam archaeologists who have strived to understand the origins of this desert culture.
