Book excerpt: The Museum of New Mexico and the New Mexico State Highway Commission have been engaged for several years in a joint effort to preserve New Mexico's rich cultural heritage of archaeological and historical remains. The resultant highway salvage archaeology program has increased tremendously our knowledge of New Mexico's past, and it was to further improve the effectiveness of this program that the Highway Cultural Inventory Project was designed. This report details the inventory findings of cultural remains along the major highways of New Mexico, as of 1966.

Book excerpt: The New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department (NMSHTD) proposes to make paving and drainage improvements along Main Street (NM 494) in Lordsburg from Railroad (Motel) Avenue to Oak Street because the downtown business district has serious drainage problems when periodic heavy rains flood the area. Before such improvement can be made, the identification and assessment of the project's impact on any cultural resources located in the area must be completed in order to comply with federal and state regulations. Archaeo-Associates, Ltd. Co. of Las Cruces, New Mexico was subcontracted by Marron and Associates, Inc., environmental engineers, to complete the cultural resource management portion of this project. On October 20, 1996, Barbara Staley Brown, Principal Investigator completed a pedestrian survey to identify cultural resources in the project area. No prehistoric artifacts, features, or sites were encountered. No historic artifacts were noted, and no historic sites will be impacted by the project. The 1936-1938 dated sidewalks installed during the "Great Depression" as a WPA work project do have some historical significance, however portions of the sidewalks need repair and some modifications must be made to comply with federal Americans with Disabilities Act mandates. Archaeological clearance is recommended for this project, although retaining as much of the original sidewalk as possible is encouraged because this feature links many of the buildings along Main Street to a specific historical period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Mobility in New Mexico uses the often-enigmatic chipped stone assemblages of the Taos Plateau to chart patterns of historical mobility in northern New Mexico. Drawing on evidence of spatial patterning and geochemical analyses of stone tools across archaeological landscapes, the book examines the distinctive mobile modalities of different human communities, documenting evolving logics of mobility—residential, logistical, pastoral, and settler colonial. In particular, it focuses on the diversity of ways that Indigenous peoples have used and moved across the Plateau landscape from deep time into the present. The analysis of Indigenous movement patterns is grounded in critical Indigenous philosophy, which applies core principles within Indigenous thought to the archaeological record in order to challenge conventional understandings of occupation, use, and abandonment. Providing an Indigenizing approach to archaeological research and new evidence for the long-term use of specific landscape features, A History of Mobility in New Mexico presents an innovative approach to human-environment interaction for readers and scholars of North American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prehispanic and early historic archaeological information for the Malpai Borderlands of southwest New Mexico and southeast Arizona is reviewed using data derived from field reconnaissance, discussion with relevant scholars, archival resources from varied agencies and institutions, and published literature. Previous regional research has focused on late prehistory (A.D. 1200 to 1450), shaping the scope of cultural historical overview and providing an opportunity to examine relationships with Casas Grandes (Paquime) to the south. A second important objective of current study is the exploration of prehispanic and early historic human impacts to Borderlands ecosystems, particularly in relation fire ecology. A recommended sequence of future research is intended to address significant questions surrounding both culture history and anthropogenic environments in the Malpai Borderlands.
