Book excerpt: The study area lies between Lock and Dam 12 at Bellevue, Iowa and Lock and Dam 14 below LeClaire, Iowa, and is inclusive of the entire valley floor and the bluffline. An assessment of cultural resources and landscapes in Pools 13-14 was undertaken to provide the basic information for managing the cultural heritage of properties under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. The present volume reviews existing information and describes the results of a sample survey of the valley floor. Recommendations for mitigation measures on specific impacted sites and long-term management of the pools' cultural properties and natural resources are the final products of the project. The basic premise of the project is that the interactions between humans and the natural (i.e. fluvial)system must be understood before the archaeological potential of any area can be assessed. Geomorphic processes are given priority because they function as independent variables affecting the conditions for preservation of archaeological evidence. Illinois.

Book Synopsis Following the Mississippian Spread by : Robert A. Cook
Download or read book Following the Mississippian Spread written by Robert A. Cook and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to specifically trace the movement of Mississippian maize farmers throughout the US Midwest and Southeast. By providing a backdrop of shifting climatic conditions during the period, this volume also investigates the relationship between farmers and their environments. Detailed regional overviews of key locations in the Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, and the peripheries of the Mississippian culture area reveal patterns and variation in the expression of Mississippian culture and interactions between migrants and local communities. Methodologically, the case studies highlight the strengths of integrating a variety of data sets to identify migration. The volume provides a broader case study of the links between climate change, migration, and the spread of agriculture that is relevant to archaeologists and anthropologists studying early agricultural societies throughout the world. Key patterns of adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of droughts, for example, provide a framework for understanding the options available to societies in the face of climate change afforded by the time-depth of an archaeological perspective.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A goemorphic investigation of Pool No. 10 on the Upper Mississippi River at Guttenberg, Iowa, was conducted to identify potential locations of prehistoric cultural resources. The geomorphic maps delineate areas of high and low potential of containing archaelogical sites and can surve as a practical guide having great utility for a comprehensive cultural resource survey. Since the estimation of archaeological potential is based on landform stability through time, the geomorphic maps also have important engineering applications. (Author).
