Book Synopsis Power Over the Body, Equality in the Family by : Charles J. Reid
Download or read book Power Over the Body, Equality in the Family written by Charles J. Reid and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "conjugal rights" has long characterized ways of speaking about marriage both in the canonistic tradition and in the secular legal systems of the West. This book explores the origins and dimensions of this concept and the range of meanings that have attached to it from the twelfth century to the present. Employing far-ranging sources, Charles Reid Jr. examines the language of marriage in classical Roman law, the Germanic legal codes of early medieval Europe, and the writings of canon lawyers and theologians from the medieval and early modern periods. The heart of the book, however, consists of the writings of the canonists of the High Middle Ages, especially the works of Hostiensis, Bernard of Parma, Innocent IV, and Raymond de Peafort. Reid's incisive survey provides a new understanding of subjects such as the right of parties to marry free of parental coercion, the nature of "paternal power," the place of bodies in the marriage contract, the meaning and implications of gender equality, and the right of inheritance.

Book Synopsis The Catholic Church on Marital Intercourse by : Robert Obach
Download or read book The Catholic Church on Marital Intercourse written by Robert Obach and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church on Marital Intercourse traces the development of the Church's theology of marital sexuality from New Testament times to the present day. The early ecclesial leaders promoted a theology of sexuality based on Stoicism's biological perception that sexual activity was solely for the purpose of reproduction. Only in the early twentieth century did a few theologians begin to move beyond discussing 'the purposes of marital intercourse' to discussing the meaning that the marital act might have for the spouses themselves. With the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), a new and positive view of marital sexuality emerged recognizing the Pauline view that the couple's marital acts express their love for each other along the lines of Christ's love for his church (Ephesians 5). In sum, The Catholic Church on Marital Intercourse treats the way in which the Catholic Church has moved away from an attitude of conditional acceptance of marital intercourse on the basis of its utility to recognition that the dynamics of sexual union are both good and holy, not only because that is the way children are conceived, but also because the marital act enhances the love of husband and wife for each other.

Book excerpt: A first of its kind critical engagement with the collected documents of Catholic Family Teaching Catholic Family Teaching (CFT) has developed in parallel with Catholic Social Teaching (CST), yet has not similarly been critically explored as a documentary tradition. Modern Catholic Family Teaching redresses this imbalance through a collection of outstanding commentaries and interpretations of the primary texts and key developments of CFT. Modern Catholic Family Teaching features academic commentary on magisterial texts that constitute primary sources of contemporary Catholic teaching on the family. Each chapter engages a moment in this tradition to invite critical academic engagement with CFT, a topic that increasingly bears weight across diverse areas of theological and ethical consideration. This edited volume offers a clear understanding of the tradition’s growth and development over 130 years, equipping scholars and students of theology to engage the pressing questions of our time.
Book Synopsis On Divine Revelation: The Teaching of the Catholic Faith Vol. One by : Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange
Download or read book On Divine Revelation: The Teaching of the Catholic Faith Vol. One written by Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In On Divine Revelation—one of Garrigou-Lagrange’s most significant works, here available in English for the very first time—he offers a classic treatment of this foundational topic. It is an organized and thorough defense of both the rationality and supernaturality of divine revelation. He presents a careful yet stimulating account of the scientific character of theology, the nature of revelation itself, mystery, dogma, the grace of faith, the powers of human reason, false interpretations thereof (rationalism, naturalism, agnosticism, and pantheism), the motives of credibility, and much more. Though written a century ago, On Divine Revelation will restore confidence in theology as a distinct and unified science and return focus to the fundamental questions of the doctrine of revelation. It also serves as a salutary corrective to contemporary theology’s anthropocentrism and concern with what is relative in revelation and religious experience by reorienting our theological attention to what is most certain, central, and sure in our knowledge of divine revelation: the Triune God who has revealed his inner life and salvific will. Readers will see the great splendor of the gift of divine revelation: radiant with credibility before the gaze of reason and drawing our supernatural assent to the mysteries through the gift of faith. As Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. observes, “On Divine Revelation . . . is a stunning work of inestimable value. No other subsequent work on this topic has come close to meeting it (much less surpassing it).”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Father's teaching seeks to make clear that, without a fundamental mutual respect and devotion, any sexual act between a husband and wife is a counterfeit of the real thing. Such an evil act is not what the Lord of Life wants human beings to contribute to the creation of a new life. A woman who has no way to escape such abuse is morally justified in resorting to effective, non-abortifacient but medically effective means to avoid being impregnated.

Book excerpt: An internationally respected Roman Catholic leader on the mystery-sacrament of marriageMarriage and the family are at the forefront of the burning questions being debated by civil society and the church today. Cultural changes in our increasingly secularized society have dire consequences in the family sphere, requiring a Christian response that is faithful to the Church's tradition, says Marc Cardinal Ouellet. In Mystery and Sacrament of Love Ouellet clearly expounds a theology of marriage and the Catholic Church's understanding of the sacrament celebrated between spouses and God. Developed with influences from Pope Francis, the theological intuitions of Vatican II, the contributions of Saint John Paul II (the "pope of the family"), and the innovative thought of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Ouellet's study lays the foundations for a faithful resurgence of well-being for families in our contemporary day and age.
Book Synopsis A Point of No Return? by : Thomas Knieps-Port le Roi
Download or read book A Point of No Return? written by Thomas Knieps-Port le Roi and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2017 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his post-synodal exhortation Amoris laetitia, Pope Francis calls upon the church to "make room for the consciences of the faithful, who very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations, and are capable of carrying out their own discernment in complex situations." Respect for personal conscience and pastoral discernment should also guide the church's theological stance and pastoral attitude toward contemporary forms of living together, especially those that do not conform to the ideal of exclusive and lifelong marriage. This volume explores the implications of this vision, with particular regard to the divorced and remarried. Book Synopsis Reception History, Tradition and Biblical Interpretation by : Robert Evans
Download or read book Reception History, Tradition and Biblical Interpretation written by Robert Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to make a contribution to current debates about the nature of Wirkungsgeschichte or reception history and its place in contemporary Biblical Studies. The author addresses three crucial questions: the relationship between reception history and historical-critical exegesis; the form of reception history itself, with a focus on the issue of which acts of reception are selected and valorized; and the role of tradition, pre-judgements and theology in relation to reception history. Disagreements about these matters contribute to what many characterise as the fragmentation of the discipline of biblical studies. The study champions the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer as a theoretical resource for understanding biblical interpretation, and a way of holding together with integrity the varied activities undertaken within the discipline. Each aspect of the argument is illustrated, tested and further explored with reference to the post-history of exhortations in the New Testament to 'be subject'. These have been widely cited and applied for 2,000 years – in literature, law and politics as well as in theological traditions. In this way the study makes a contribution not just to the theory but also the practice of reception history.
