Bedingt durch die Digitalisierung und die damit verbundene Automatisierung von Arbeitsbereichen prognostizieren die beiden Autoren einen Wegfall von über 40 Prozent der derzeitigen Berufe auf dem amerikanischen Arbeitsmarkt. Die Übertragung der Studie auf Deutschland, beauftragt vom Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales, kommt zu anderen Ergebnissen. Die Automatisierungswahrscheinlichkeit von Berufen liegt für die USA demnach nur bei lediglich 9 Prozent und in Deutschland bei 12 Prozent. Bonin et al. arbeiten mit der Hypothese, dass der Wandel der Berufe nicht bedeuten muss, dass diese in Zukunft nicht mehr existieren oder Arbeitslosigkeit in größerem Ausmaß zu befürchten ist. Im Gegenteil, die neuen technischen Möglichkeiten bieten vielmehr die Chance, Arbeitsplätze neu zu gestalten, indem Arbeitnehmer die gewonnen Freiräume für andere, schwer automatisierbare Tätigkeiten, nutzen können. Die Digitalisierung schafft es, Arbeitsplätze zu verändern und neue Arbeitsbereiche zu schaffen. Viele Berufe haben ein hohes Substituierbarkeitspotenzial, das bedeutet, dass bereits heute ein Teil der ausgeführten Tätigkeit von Computern und computergesteuerten Maschinen übernommen werden kann. Diese Tätigkeiten sind somit automatisierbar. Das Substituierbarkeitspotenzial von Berufen wirkt sich unterschiedlich auf die Geschlechter aus. Dengler & Mathes kommen zu dem Schluss, dass Männer in Berufen arbeiten, die ein höheres Substituierbarkeitspotential haben als typisch weibliche Berufe. Beispielsweise werden für typische männliche Tätigkeiten die Fertigungsberufe angeführt. Frauen haben ein hohes Automatisierungspotential in unternehmensbezogene Dienstleitungsberufen oder Handelsberufe. Für beide Geschlechtergruppen trifft zu, dass mit steigenden Anforderungsniveau das Substituierbarkeitspotential sinkt.
