Book Synopsis The History of al-Ṭabarī Vol. 8 by :
Download or read book The History of al-Ṭabarī Vol. 8 written by and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the history of the Muslim community and the biography of Muḥammad in the middle Medinan years. It begins with the unsuccessful last Meccan attack on Medina, known as the battle of the Trench. Events following this battle show the gradual collapse of Meccan resistance to Islam. The next year, when Muḥammad set out on pilgrimage to Mecca, the Meccans at first blocked the road, but eventually a ten-year truce was negotiated at al-Ḥudaybiyah, with Muḥammad agreeing to postpone his pilgrimage until the following year. The Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyah was followed by a series of Muslim expeditions, climaxing in the important conquest of Khaybar. In the following year Muḥammad made the so-called Pilgrimage of Fulfillment unopposed. Al-Ṭabarī's account emphasizes Islam's expanding geographical horizon during this period. Soon after the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah, Muḥammad is said to have sent letters to six foreign rulers inviting them to become Muslims. Another example of this expanding horizon was the unsuccessful expedition to Mu'tah in Jordan. Shortly afterward the Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyah broke down, and Muḥammad marched on Mecca. The Meccans capitulated, and Muḥammad entered the city on his own terms. He treated the city leniently, and most of the Meccan oligarchy swore allegiance to him as Muslims. Two events in the personal life of Muḥammad during this period caused controversy in the community. Muḥammad fell in love with and married Zaynab bint. Jaḥsh, the divorced wife of his adopted son Zayd. Because of Muḥammad's scruples, the marriage took place only after a Qur'anic revelation permitting believers to marry the divorced wives of their adopted sons. In the Affair of the Lie, accusations against Muḥammad's young wife ʿĀʾishah were exploited by various factions in the community and in Muḥammad's household. In the end, a Qur'anic revelation proclaimed ʿĀʾishah's innocence and the culpability of the rumormongers. This volume of al-Ṭabarī's History records the collapse of Meccan resistance to Islam, the triumphant return of Muḥammad to his native city, the conversion to Islam of the Meccan oligarchy, and the community's successful weathering of a number of potentially embarrassing events in Muḥammad's private life.

Book Synopsis Automatic Recognition of Words in Arabic Manuscripts by : Mohammad S. M Khorsheed
Download or read book Automatic Recognition of Words in Arabic Manuscripts written by Mohammad S. M Khorsheed and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The need to transliterate large numbers of historical Arabic documents into machine-readable form has motivated new work on offline recognition of Arabic script. Arabic script presents two challenges: orthography is cursive and letter shape is context sensitive. This dissertation presents two techniques to achieve high word recognition rates: the segmentation-free technique and the segmentation-based technique. The segmentation-free technique treats the word as a whole. The word image is first transformed into a normalised polar image. The two-dimensional Fourier transform is then applied to the polar image. This results in a Fourier spectrum that is invariant to dilation, translation, and rotation. The Fourier spectrum is used to form the word template, or train the word model in the template-based and the multiple hidden Markov model (HMM) recognition systems, respectively. The recognition of an input word image is based on the minimum distance measure from the word templates and the maximum likelihood probability for the word models. The segmentation-based technique uses a single hidden Markov model, which is composed of multiple character-models. The technique implements the analytic approach in which words are segmented into smaller units, not necessarily characters. The word skeleton is decomposed into a number of links in orthographic order, it is then transferred into a sequence of discrete symbols using vector quantisation. The training of each character-model is performed using either: state assignment in the lexicon-driven configuration or the Baum-Welch method in the lexicon-free configuration. The observation sequence of the input word is given to the hidden Markov model and the Viterbi algorithm is applied to provide an ordered list of the candidate recognitions."
Download or read book The Trans-Saharan Book Trade written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the manuscript treasures in the libraries of Timbuktu and throughout the northwestern quarter of Africa become known, many questions are raised. How did a manuscript culture flourish in the Sahara and in Muslim Africa more generally? Under what conditions did African intellectuals thrive, and how did they acquire scholarly works and the writing paper necessary to contribute to knowledge? By exploring the history of the trans-Saharan book and paper trades, the scholarly production and teaching curriculae of African Muslims and the formation, preservation and codicology of library collections, the authors of this original volume provide a variety of answers. The select number of invited contributions represents current research in the material, technological, economic, and cultural dimensions of manuscript production, circulation, and preservation, and the development of specific scholarly and intellectual traditions in Saharan and Sudanic Africa

Book Synopsis The Optical Recognition of Printed Arabic Text by : Mohammad Bassam Haffar-Habbal
Download or read book The Optical Recognition of Printed Arabic Text written by Mohammad Bassam Haffar-Habbal and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work on the recognition of Arabic characters has been relatively sparse. The recognition problem is divided into several sub problems and novel approaches are proposed for the solution of these sub problems. The problem of line segmentation of Arabic text with its special characters such as the presence of secondaries above and below the primary part is tackled. The problem of shadowed Arabic characters is also handled. A novel technique for contour tracing of Arabic characters is introduced. The problem of word segmentation of closed contours is also tackled. A novel approach to achieve word segmentation is introduced. It is called word segmentation after recognition. A major contribution is accomplished at the recognition level. Since an Arabic character can have any of four different forms namely the isolated form, the beginning form, the middle form and the ending form, the number of classes to be recognized increases from 28 to 112 different class. This thesis introduced a novel approach for Arabic form recognition using look ahead techniques. A second level of recognition is introduced. It is called secondary position recognition relative to the primary part. A third level of recognition is also introduced. This level detects the position of the Arabic character relative to the base line. Finally, a fourth level of recognition is introduced. This level applies the correlation concepts on the horizontal and vertical densities of the unknown segmented Arabic character. Then, the minimum distance criterion is utilized to select the matching character from the appropriate form library. In addition, several special case problems in the recognition of Arabic characters are introduced and solved. The obtained results are the following. The used features are structural. The size of data base is 150 characters. The classification is min. Euclidean distance criterion. The performance is 96.67 % recognition rate. The used characters are printed Arabic characters.
