Book excerpt: This Reader was developed for use in an intermediate level course for Adeni Arabic. It assumes knowledge of the content of the "Arabic Adeni Textbook" or its equivalent. Its purpose is to present the student with a broader and more specialized vocabulary as well as to provide exposure to the syntax of the dialect. There are variations within Adeni Arabic which correlate with the education level of the speakers. Educated speakers tend to avoid certain colloquial expressions. They shift to more formal language (diglossia) when speaking about political, economic, social, and religious topics. It is often possible to infer, if not the social class, then the degree of education of speakers by the way they speak and the expressions they avoid. This fact had some bearing on the author's choice of native speakers and on the subject matter of the selections. The text of most of the selections is based on field tapes recorded by natives of Aden with different educational and social backgrounds. The selections received some editing for educational purposes. The Reader consists of forty five selections preceded by a transcription and pronunciation system to acquaint the learner with the transcription employed throughout the Reader. The symbols used for the transliteration are the most commonly employed for Arabic dialects. In speech sometimes short vowels are omitted because of elision and assimilation or because of the differences in pronunciation among native speakers. The student should keep this in mind when working with the Reader selections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS BOOK DOESN'T CONTAIN ANY ARABIC LETTERS! ALL ARABIC WORDS IN THIS BOOK WERE WRITTEN IN ENGLISH-TRANSLITERATION! Have you always wanted to learn how to speak the Yemeni Arabic dialect but simply didn’t have the time? Well if so, then, look no further. You can hold in your hands one of the most advanced and revolutionary method that was ever designed for quickly becoming conversational in a language. In creating this time-saving program, master linguist Yatir Nitzany spent years examining the twenty-seven most common languages in the world and distilling from them the three hundred and fifty words that are most likely to be used in real conversations. These three hundred and fifty words were chosen in such a way that they were structurally interrelated and, when combined, form sentences. Through various other discoveries about how real conversations work—discoveries that are detailed further in this book—Nitzany created the necessary tools for linking these words together in a specific way so that you may become rapidly and almost effortlessly conversant—now. If your desire is to learn complicated grammatical rules or to speak perfectly proper and precise Arabic, this book is not for you. However, if you need to actually hold a conversation while on a trip to Yemen, to impress that certain someone, or to be able to speak with your grandfather or grandmother as soon as possible, then the Nitzany Method is what you have been looking for. This book is recommended for those who already have some prior knowledge of the pronunciation of Arabic accents (such as the Arabic accents: ayin, ghayn, ha, and khaf). For those of you who do not, this book does indeed provide some great, in-depth techniques on the pronunciation and recognition of these accents, that you will encounter throughout the program. These techniques have proven extremely beneficial for beginner students who were previously unfamiliar with these accent pronunciations. But keep in mind this isn’t a pronunciation book! Yemeni Arabic encompasses three slightly different dialects, the San’ani, Ta’izzi-Adeni (also called South Yemeni Arabic or Djibouti Arabic), and Hadhrami. The one in this book is the San'ani dialect, which is the dialect of the capital Sanaa. Keep in mind that Yemeni Arabic is not an official language, but rather is a colloquial dialect. The purpose of my method is solely to give you the tools to create your own sentences in order to become conversational, while in regards to grammar, pronunciation, etc., you are on your own! This method is designed for fluency in a foreign language, while communicating in the first person present tense. Nitzany believes that what’s most important is actually being able to understand and be understood by another human being right away. Therefore, unlike other courses, all words in this program are taught in English transliteration, without having to learn the complex alphabet. More formalized training in grammar rules, etc., can come later. This is one of the several, in a series of instructional language guides, the Nitzany Method’s revolutionary approach is the only one in the world that uses its unique language technology to actually enable you to speak and understand native speakers in the shortest amount of time possible. No more depending on volumes of books of fundamental, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, all with hundreds of pages in order to learn a language. With Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy, all you need are forty-five pages. Learn Arabic today, not tomorrow, and get started now!

Book excerpt: Much of the insight in the field of Arabic linguistics has for a long time remained unknown to linguists outside the field. Regrettably, Arabic data rarely feature in the formulation of theories and analytical tools in modern linguistics. This situation is unfavourable to both sides. The Arabist, once an outrider, has almost become a non-member of the mainstream linguistics community. Consequently, linguistics itself has been deprived of a wealth of data from one of the world's major languages. However, it is reassuring to witness advances being made to integrate into mainstream linguistics the visions and debates of specialists in Arabic. Building on this fruitful endeavour, this book presents thought-provoking, new articles, especially written for this collection by leading scholars from both sides. The authors discuss topics in historical, social and spatial dialectology focusing on Arabic data investigated within modern analytical frameworks.

Book excerpt: This is the renewed and enlarged English version of a textbook developed at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, which introduced many generations of students successfully to Modern Written Arabic. It is a sequel to the well-known kullu tamam!, on Egyptian Arabic, by the same authors. It focuses on the modern written language used in real life by providing short texts taken from Egyptian journals, newspapers, official statements, and the internet, and introduces personal and business letters, some of them offered in handwritten form (ruqca). For those who have studied kullu tamam!, the first lessons give contrastive word lists and exercises to make the link with colloquial Egyptian. Extensive pattern drills, translation exercises in both directions, and writing exercises help to understand and make active use of the language. The key to the exercises, the Arabic-English and English-Arabic glossary, and the audio CD containing the texts will allow for classroom use as well as for self-study.

This book was released on 1983-04-29 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elementary Modern Standard Arabic Course (EMSA), published in 1983, is the premier introduction, for the English-speaking student, to the active written language of the Arab world. Expressly designed for the beginning student, the course is written by a team of Arabic language teachers consisting of native and non-native Arabic speakers, linguists and people whose primary interests are literature and allied areas. It implements an audio-lingual approach to language teaching while presenting the elements of Modern Standard Arabic as written and spoken in the contemporary Arab World. Volume 1 is complete in itself and presents a practical introduction to the writing system of Arabic and to its pronunciation, with reading and writing pronunciation drills. Thirty lessons provide a basic working knowledge of Arabic. Each lesson contains a text, a vocabulary, grammar and drills including oral and written comprehension passages. An Arabic-English glossary completes the volume. The course continues in Volume 2, which extends the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and expression. Fifteen further lessons are followed by appendices which give reference information.
