Book excerpt: Bioassays: Advanced Methods and Applications provides a thorough understanding of the applications of bioassays in monitoring toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. It reviews the newest tests and applications in discovering compounds and toxins in the environment, covering all suitable organisms, from bacteria, to microorganisms, to higher plants, including invertebrates and vertebrates. By learning about newer tests, water pollution control testing can be less time and labor consuming, and less expensive. This book will be helpful for anyone working in aquatic environments or those who need an introduction to ecotoxicology or bioassays, from investigators, to technicians and students. Features chapters written by internationally renowned researchers in the field, all actively involved in the development and application of bioassays Gives the reader an understanding of the advantages and deficiencies of available tests Addresses the problem of understanding the impact of toxins in an aquatic environment and how to assess them

Book Synopsis Freshwater Biological Monitoring by : D. Pascoe
Download or read book Freshwater Biological Monitoring written by D. Pascoe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Biological Monitoring contains the proceedings of a Specialized Conference held in Cardiff, Wales, on September 12-14, 1984. Contributors explore advances in freshwater biological monitoring, paying particular attention to the interpretation of traditional community surveillance studies by means of the modern computer and multivariate statistical techniques and how such field community responses are related to laboratory studies of pollutants. The design, validation, and use of novel monitoring systems employing plants, invertebrates, and fish are considered, along with developments in the in vitro assessment of mutagenicity of chemicals present in water. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with a review of issues surrounding the tests used in biological monitoring and the ways in which the information will be used. The discussion then turns to the usefulness of the colonization sampler in collecting macroinvertebrates indicative of river water quality in lowland rivers; biological assessment of water quality and conservation evaluation in Welsh rivers; and water chemistry, benthos, and drift in a fast-flowing river. The following chapters focus on eutrophication in rivers; toxicity testing with freshwater macroinvertebrates; and compliance biomonitoring. This monograph will be of value to policymakers and environmentalists concerned with water pollution control.

Book Synopsis Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution by : John E. Cairns
Download or read book Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution written by John E. Cairns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution focuses on the processes, methodologies, and experiments involved in monitoring water pollution. Divided into six parts, the selection features the contributions of authors who have devoted time and energy in advancing biological monitoring to measure pollution in water. The first part is a review paper that focuses on the strengths of biological monitoring relative to the detection of harmful conditions. This part stresses that biological monitoring has received considerable attention. The second part deals with review papers on biological monitoring. The discussions focused on the identification of problem; the review of functional methods; community and ecosystem indices used in biomonitoring; and structure and function relationships relative to ecosystem stress. The third part covers the application of community structural analysis to biomonitoring programs. This part puts emphasis on the need to develop methods to identify community structures relative to the conduct of ecological research. Other parts of the selection are devoted to toxicity testing and discussions on the monitoring of waste discharges and introduction of chemicals to the environment. Experiments and models are presented to support the claims of the authors. The book can be a valuable source of information for those interested in the monitoring of water pollution.
Book Synopsis Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management by : J.M. Hellawell
Download or read book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management written by J.M. Hellawell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preface of a book often provides a convenient place in which the author can tender his apologies for any inadequacies and affords him the facility to excuse himself by reminding the reader that his art is long but life, or at least the portion of it in which he has the opportunity for writing books, is short. I, too, am deeply conscious that I have undertaken a task which I could not hope to complete to my own satisfaction but I offer, in self defence, the observation that, inadequate though it is, there is no other book extant, so far as I am aware, which provides the information contained herein within the covers of a single volume. Often during the last decade, in discharging my responsibilities for the environmental aspects of the water authority's operations and works, I should have been deeply grateful to have had access to a compendium such as this. The lack of a convenient source of data made me aware of the need which I have attempted to fill and in doing so I have drawn on my experiences of the kinds of problem which are presented to biologists in the water industry. The maxim 'half a loaf is better than none' seems particularly apt in this context.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Ecology of Marine Invertebrate Larvae by : Tyler Carrier
Download or read book Evolutionary Ecology of Marine Invertebrate Larvae written by Tyler Carrier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by ocean - the home to a staggering and sometimes overwhelming diversity of organisms, a majority of which reside in pelagic form. Marine invertebrate larvae are an integral part of this pelagic diversity and have stimulated the curiosity of researchers for centuries. This book will provide an important, modern update on the topic of larval ecology, representing the first major synthesis of this interdisciplinary field for more than 20 years. The content will be structured around four major areas: evolutionary origins and transitions in developmental mode; functional morphology and ecology of larval forms; larval transport, settlement, and metamorphosis; climate change and larval ecology at the extremes. This novel synthesis will integrate traditional larval ecology with life history theory, evolutionary developmental biology, and modern genomics research.
