Book excerpt: Truly aquatic insects species are in North Europe found in ten different orders, representing a wide variety of form and life styles. Most diverse are the dipterans, the two-winged flies and midges, including among others the notorious blood-sucking pests of the boreal and subarctic regions. Other diverse orders are chiefly the beetles and caddisflies, including several hundreds of species occupying most of the available freshwater environments. Besides the aquatic beetles and bugs, insects classified as aquatic normally develop in water, whereas the adult flying forms are terrestrial. Swarming mayflies and hovering libellulas are well-known characteristics of lake and stream shores, whereas their aquatic larvae remain more anonymous for the general naturalist. On the contrary, insect larvae are nowadays widely used in environmental monitoring, the actual species composition at a locality providing reliable evidence on the impacts of acidification and pollution. Environmental applications have engaged many people in the identification of aquatic insect larvae, on scientific, commercial or governmental basis. However, these activities have been hampered by a general lack of an up-to-date standard work providing modern nomenclature and reliable identification keys including all known taxa from the region. The present handbook is designed to fill this gap, as far as taxonomic knowledge is available. Geographically, the handbook focuses on the Nordic Countries, i. e. Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Most information included will be correct also for the rest of Northern Europe, although some more southern taxa may be absent from the identification keys and check lists. The handbook is designed to serve several important purposes. The introductory text together with the many literature references provided for each order or family is a rich source of information on natural history, morphology, faunistics, classification and identification. The richly illustrated identification keys are generally given for both larvae and adults at least to the generic level. Check lists record the distributions of all known species from the region on a national basis.

It examines the different ways that groups of species have developed modes of existence in or on the surface of water, and gives reasons why the gross morphology of insects is not favorable for life in or near bodies of water, such as wings that fail to function after coming into contact with water, rendering them useless.

Book excerpt: Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates: Keys to Palaearctic Fauna, Fourth Edition, is part of a multivolume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world that began with Vol. I: Ecology and General Biology (2015), then Vol. II (2016) Keys to Nearctic Fauna, and finally in Vol. III (2018) Keys to Neotropical Hexapoda (insects and springtails). It now continues with identification keys for Palearctic invertebrates in Vol. IV. Two other volumes currently in development focus on general invertebrates of the Neotropical/Antarctic, and Australasian Bioregions. Other volumes in the early planning stages include Afrotropical and Oriental/Oceanic Bioregions. All volumes are designed for multiple uses and levels of expertise by professionals in universities, government agencies and private companies, as well as by graduate and undergraduate students. Provides identification keys for inland water (fresh to saline) invertebrates of the Palearctic Zoogeographic Region, from Iceland to Russia, and from the northern Pole region to Saharan Africa in the west, through the Middle East, and to the central China and Japan in the east Presents identification keys for aquatic invertebrates to the genus or species level for many groups and to family for Hexapoda, with the keys progressing from higher to lower taxonomic levels Includes a general introduction and sections on limitations, terminology and morphology, material preparation and preservation and references

Book excerpt: Santo, the largest island in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, is an extraordinary geographical and cultural microcosm, combining reefs, caves, mountains, and satellite isles--with human history that dates back 3,000 years. Collecting contributions from more than one hundred authors, The Natural History of Santo is the result of a 2006 Santo expedition, which brought together scientists, volunteers, and students from twenty-five countries. This lavishly illustrated book pays homage to the biodiversity of this "planet-island" and bridges the gaps between scientific knowledge, conservation, and education.
