Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The view that active dredged material containment areas (DMCA) are unproductive, commercially unusable, and incompatible with local needs can be challenged by demonstrating that there are situations where dredged material and DMCA's can be used to create positive benefits. One example would be a profitable and biologically productive use of disposal acreage for aquaculture. A 2 day workshop on aquaculture in DMCA's held in Galveston, Tex., in September 1982 attended by representatives from the Corps, other Federal and State agencies, private industry, and academia, examined issues affecting the technical, economic, and practical use of DMCA's for aquaculture ...

Book Synopsis Guide to Site Selection, Design, and Construction of Dredged Material Containment Areas for Aquaculture by : Debbie Nettles
Download or read book Guide to Site Selection, Design, and Construction of Dredged Material Containment Areas for Aquaculture written by Debbie Nettles and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Approximately 40 percent of dredged material generated from coastal dredging activities is placed into diked dredged material containment areas or DMCA. Because suitable sites are often difficult and expensive to acquire, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local dredging sponsors have an ongoing interest in programs that may help in making real estate available for DMCA construction. The adaptation of diked disposal areas for aquaculture is especially interesting because DMCA's and aquaculture ponds share many characteristics, including perimeter dikes, structures to regulate water levels, construction on impervious soils, and many similar permit requirements. This publication provides guidelines for evaluating and selecting sites and for designing and constructing sites for the uses of dredged material disposal and aquaculture. Also included are examples of potential species for new operations"--National Sea Grant Library publication website.

Book excerpt: This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for CaliforniaÕs remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem typeÑits distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, Ecosystems of California covers the state from oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed. Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of CaliforniaÕs ecological patterns and the history of the stateÕs various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the stateÕs ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of CaliforniaÕs environment and curious naturalists.
Book Synopsis Ecological Aquaculture by : Barry A. Costa-Pierce
Download or read book Ecological Aquaculture written by Barry A. Costa-Pierce and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world's demand for food from aquatic environments continues to increase, the importance of performing aquaculture in an environmentally responsible manner also increases. The aim of this important and thought-provoking book is to stimulate discussion among aquaculture's modern scientific, education and extension communities concerning the principles, practices and policies needed to develop ecologically and socially sustainable aquaculture systems worldwide. Ecological Aquaculture provides fascinating and valuable insights into primitive (and often sustainable) culture systems, and ties these to modern large-scale aquaculture systems. The book is edited, and authored to a considerable degree, by Barry Costa-Pierce who has assembled a team of some of the leading thinkers in the field, providing information spanning a spectrum of activities from artisanal to high technology approaches to producing aquatic organisms in a balanced and environmentally-friendly way. Ecological Aquaculture is an essential purchase for all aquaculture personnel involved in commercial, practical and research capacities. Libraries in research establishments and universities where aquaculture, biological, environmental and aquatic sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book available on their shelves.

Book Synopsis The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of agrifood systems to shocks and stresses and led to increased global food insecurity and malnutrition. Action is needed to make agrifood systems more resilient, efficient, sustainable and inclusive. The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 presents country-level indicators of the resilience of agrifood systems. The indicators measure the robustness of primary production and food availability, as well as physical and economic access to food. They can thus help assess the capacity of national agrifood systems to absorb shocks and stresses, a key aspect of resilience. The report analyses the vulnerabilities of food supply chains and how rural households cope with risks and shocks. It discusses options to minimize trade-offs that building resilience may have with efficiency and inclusivity. The aim is to offer guidance on policies to enhance food supply chain resilience, support livelihoods in the agrifood system and, in the face of disruption, ensure sustainable access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to all.
