Book Synopsis To Lead As Equals by : Jeffrey L. Gould
Download or read book To Lead As Equals written by Jeffrey L. Gould and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a carefully argued study of peasants and labor during the Somoza regime, focusing on popular movements in the economically strategic department of Chinandega in western Nicaragua. Jeffrey Gould traces the evolution of group consciousness among peasants and workers as they moved away from extreme dependency on the patron to achieve an autonomous social and political ideology. In doing so, he makes important contributions to peasant studies and theories of revolution, as well as our understanding of Nicaraguan history. According to Gould, when Anastasio Somoza first came to power in 1936, workers and peasants took the Somocista reform program seriously. Their initial acceptance of Somocismo and its early promises of labor rights and later ones of land redistribution accounts for one of the most peculiar features of the pre-Sandinista political landscape: the wide gulf separating popular movements and middle-class opposition to the government. Only the alliance of the Frente Sandinista (FSLN) and the peasant movement would knock down the wall of silence between the two forces.

Book Synopsis Ernest Vandiver, Governor of Georgia by : Harold Paulk Henderson
Download or read book Ernest Vandiver, Governor of Georgia written by Harold Paulk Henderson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Vandiver was elected governor of the state of Georgia in 1958 on a platform of fiscal conservatism and steadfast resistance to desegregation. Having vowed to defend Georgia’s segregated social system at all costs, Vandiver nevertheless concluded that the state could not close its schools to avoid desegregation. Because of his decision to reject the path taken by George Wallace in Alabama and Orval Faubus in Arkansas and to protect public education in the state by complying with federal court mandates, Vandiver was denounced by the state’s more vocal proponents of segregation. Using primary sources and extensive interviews with the governor and his contemporaries, Henderson tells the full story of Vandiver’s life as a transitional figure in the political history of the state. He portrays Vandiver as a man cast by circumstances into presiding over a crisis greater than any faced by a Georgia governor since the Civil War. Henderson also notes some of Vandiver’s less recognized accomplishments, including the involvement of state government in furthering tourism, foreign investment, and industry. Ernest Vandiver is here recognized for his significant achievements in guiding the state through a period of rapid transformation.

Book Synopsis Class at Bat, Gender on Deck and Race in the Hole by : Ron Briley
Download or read book Class at Bat, Gender on Deck and Race in the Hole written by Ron Briley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen essays by Briley focus on major league baseball as it reflected the changing American culture from about 1945 to about 1980. He examines the era through the lens of race, gender and class—categories which have increasingly become essential analytical tools for scholars. The accounts of Roman Mejias and Cesar Cedeno offer some disturbing insights regarding the acceptance of Latinos in baseball and American society. In one essay, Briley refers to baseball as the heart of the nation's democratic spirit, noting that the son of a rural farmer could play alongside a governor’s son and both would receive only the praise that their playing merited. However, in writing about the Milwaukee Braves’move to Atlanta, the lamentations of fans—that baseball had succumbed to the age of affluence—are compared to the changing patterns of demographics and economic power in American society. Even with the increased participation of women on the field with teams like the Silver Bullets, the final essay comments on organized baseball’s perception of them as primarily spectators. Book Synopsis In Theaters Everywhere by : Brian Hannan
Download or read book In Theaters Everywhere written by Brian Hannan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts among Hollywood studios and exhibitors have been going on for years. At their heart are questions about how films should be released—where, when and at what speed. Both sides of this disagreement are losers, with exhibitors using the law via various Consent Decrees and studios retaliating by tightly controlling output. In the Silent Era, movies were not released nearly as widely as they are now. This book tells the story of how the few became the many. It explores the contraction of the release cycle, the maximization of the marketing dollar, and the democratization of consumer access. It also offers a comprehensive list of wide releases and rebuts much of what previous scholars have found.
