Book Synopsis Approximate Bodies by : Maurizio Calbi
Download or read book Approximate Bodies written by Maurizio Calbi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-05-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern period was an age of anatomical exploration and revelation, with new discoveries capturing the imagination not only of scientists but also of playwrights and poets. Approximate Bodies examines, in fascinating detail, the changing representation of the body in early modern drama and in the period's anatomical and gynaecological treatises. Maurizio Calbi focuses on the unstable representation of both masculinity and femininity in Renaissance texts such as The Duchess of Malfi, The Changeling and a variety of Shakespeare plays. Drawing on theorists including Foucault, Derrida and Lacan, these close textual readings examine the effects of social, psychic and cultural influences on early modern images of the body. Calbi identifies the ways in which political, social, racial and sexual power structures effect the construction of the body in dramatic and anatomical texts. Calbi's analysis displays how images such as the deformed body of the outsider, the effeminate body of the desiring male and the disfigured body parts of the desiring female indicate an unstable, incomplete conception of the body in the Renaissance. Compelling and impeccably researched, this is a sophisticated account of the fantasies and anxieties that play a role in constructing the early modern body. Approximate Bodies makes a major contribution to the field of early modern studies and to debates around the body.
Book Synopsis Approximate Analytical Solutions for Hypersonic Flow Over Slender Power Law Bodies by : Harold Mirels
Download or read book Approximate Analytical Solutions for Hypersonic Flow Over Slender Power Law Bodies written by Harold Mirels and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximate analytical solutions are presented for two-dimensional and axisymmetric hypersonic flow over slender power law bodies. Both zero-order (M->∞) and first-order (small but nonvanishing values of 1/(Mδ)2) solutions are presented, where M is free-stream Mach number and δ is a characteristic slope. These solutions are compared with exact numerical integrations of the equations of motion and appear to be accurate particularly when the shock is relatively close to the body.

Book Synopsis Slender-body Theory Based on Approximate Solution of the Transonic Flow Equation by : John R. Spreiter
Download or read book Slender-body Theory Based on Approximate Solution of the Transonic Flow Equation written by John R. Spreiter and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Approximate solutions of the nonlinear equations of the small disturbance theory of transonic flow are found for the pressure distribution on pointed slender bodies of revolution for flows with free-stream Mach number 1, and for flows that are either purely subsonic or purely supersonic. These results are obtained by application of a method based on local linearization that was introduced recently in the analysis of similar problems in low-dimensional flows. The theory is developed for bodies of arbitrary shapes, and specific results are given for cone-cylinders and for parabolic-arc bodies at zero angle of attack. All results are compared either with existing theoretical results or with experimental data.

Book Synopsis Modeling and Approximation in Heat Transfer by : Leon R. Glicksman
Download or read book Modeling and Approximation in Heat Transfer written by Leon R. Glicksman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers face many challenges in systems design and research. Modeling and Approximation in Heat Transfer describes the approach to engineering solutions through simplified modeling of the most important physical features and approximating their behavior. Systematic discussion of how modeling and associated synthesis can be carried out is included - in engineering practice, these steps very often precede mathematical analysis or the need for precise results.

Book Synopsis Approximation and Computation in Science and Engineering by : Nicholas J. Daras
Download or read book Approximation and Computation in Science and Engineering written by Nicholas J. Daras and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, extensive research has been conducted by eminent mathematicians and engineers whose results and proposed problems are presented in this new volume. It is addressed to graduate students, research mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. Individual contributions are devoted to topics of approximation theory, functional equations and inequalities, fixed point theory, numerical analysis, theory of wavelets, convex analysis, topology, operator theory, differential operators, fractional integral operators, integro-differential equations, ternary algebras, super and hyper relators, variational analysis, discrete mathematics, cryptography, and a variety of applications in interdisciplinary topics. Several of these domains have a strong connection with both theories and problems of linear and nonlinear optimization. The combination of results from various domains provides the reader with a solid, state-of-the-art interdisciplinary reference to theory and problems. Some of the works provide guidelines for further research and proposals for new directions and open problems with relevant discussions.

Book Synopsis The Changeling: The State of Play by : Gordon McMullan
Download or read book The Changeling: The State of Play written by Gordon McMullan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays on Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's unsettling revenge tragedy The Changeling represents key new directions in criticism and research. The 13 chapters fall into six groups focusing on questions of space, theology, collaboration, disability both mental and physical, and performance both early modern and contemporary. The Changeling's critical and theatrical history, and a selected bibliography for the volume helps readers easily find the most frequently cited materials in the volume as a whole, while individual essays detail the full expanse of critical sources to pursue for further analysis. With contributors ranging from highly regarded critics to emerging scholars drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Switzerland, the collection equips readers to engage with a variety of critical approaches to the play, moving a long way beyond the last century's tendency to treat Middleton as 'the early modern Ibsen', to ignore Rowley, and to focus almost wholly on a single aspect of the play's plot. Key themes and topics include: · Performance · Space and affect · Authorial collaboration · Gender and representation · Violence · Disability
