Passant du "média-unique" à un pluralisme effréné, le secteur médiatique accompagne de près l'évolution politique de ces pays. Cette étude analyse ces deux évolutions parallèles qui sont intimement liées du fait que les médias sont au coeur des rivalités de pouvoir et des débats qu'ils suscitent. La première partie dresse un état des lieux des médias, analyse l'attitude des lecteurs et des électeurs à l'égard des journaux et décrit l'organisation des campagnes médiatiques, notamment leur régulation. La seconde partie développe les facteurs explicatifs de l'état de la presse, qui sont d'ordre géographique, historique et politique. La situation géopolitique des états d'Afrique de l'Ouest est révélée dans la troisième partie par les représentations politiques et les luttes de pouvoirs qui animent le débat national commenté par la presse. A cet effet, nous utilisons la presse comme outil d'analyse géopolitique, ce qui permet de donner la parole aux témoins et acteurs directs de l'actualité qui marque la politique de ces pays africains. L'analyse de contenu des journaux pendant les échéances électorales illustre le rôle et la place de la presse dans le débat national et le paysage politique. Ainsi, nous constatons que le défi de l'indépendance formelle des médias reste à relever et qu'il doit passer par le respect de la déontologie et l'autonomie financière. Dans ces démocraties émergentes, les échéances électorales constituent des étapes déterminantes pour le processus de démocratisation, elles créent à la fois de fortes attentes et de profondes craintes.
