Book excerpt: Les objectifs de ce travail de thèse sont, au niveau expérimental, d'élaborer et de caractériser les propriétés vibratoires de matériaux potentiellement intéressants pour la réalisation de résonateurs acoustiques à haut facteur de qualité. D'un point de vue théorique, le but est d'identifier et d'évaluer les mécanismes de dissipation de l'énergie vibratoire dans le domaine des fréquences proches du kHz qui nous intéresse. D'un point de vue expérimental, un dispositif de caractérisation vibratoire a été développé ; il repose sur la détection des modes propres de vibration et la détermination des facteurs de qualité des échantillons mesurés. Le procédé de sustentation sur film de gaz a permis d'élaborer des échantillons en verre de silice de différentes qualités. Nous avons montré que l'amortissement intrinsèque des silices synthétiques est environ un ordre de grandeur inférieur à celui des silices naturelles, dans le domaine des fréquences proches de 10 kHz. Une procédure de traitement de surface post-élaboration par attaque chimique a été développée, elle permet d'augmenter de façon importante les facteurs de qualité des échantillons en verre de silice. Les valeurs maximales atteintes pour le facteur de qualité sont de l'ordre de 107 pour les silices synthétiques. Afin de comprendre l'origine de ces différents niveaux d'amortissement observés, une série de caractérisations chimiques, optiques et acoustiques a été réalisée. Au niveau théorique, nous avons étudié les processus de dissipation rencontrés dans les matériaux, qui sont à l'origine de l'amortissement intrinsèque. Parmi les mécanismes identifiés dans la littérature, nous avons mis en évidence un important critère de sélection des matériaux résonnants : les pertes générées par thermoélasticité. En ce qui concerne les processus de dissipation ayant peu été étudiés dans la littérature, nous avons développé différents modèles théoriques. Les résultats de ces modèles montrent l'importance des contraintes internes dans l'amortissement intrinsèque. Par contre, la présence d'impuretés à l'état de traces ne semble pas avoir d'influence, au premier ordre, sur la valeur du facteur de qualité.Enfin, les propriétés vibratoires de deux autres familles de matériaux, identifiées comme potentiellement intéressantes, ont également été étudiées. Des échantillons en saphir monocristallin élaborés par la technique du préformage local, et des échantillons en verre métallique Pd-Ni-Cu-P obtenus par fusion en creuset froid et coulée en lingotière, présentent des facteurs de qualité inférieurs à ceux des échantillons en verre de silice.

Les modèles d'hystérésis existants sont présentés. Par la suite est proposé le modèle opérateur d'hystérésis original avec son fondement mathématique et ses applications. Enfin la prévision des réponses harmoniques et transitoires d'une structure sur deux types de plots amortisseurs avec le modèle proposé. Partie IL Phénomènes métriques : Ici il est montré que de l'amortissement peut intervenir quand le mouvement déforme le système de coordonnées utilisées. Puis en utilisant le concept de la relativité restreinte est modélisé l'effet dissipatif induit par une excitation de fréquence variable. L'idée fondamentale est que chaque système a son propre temps qui dépend d'événements externes. Pour cela un axe supplémentaire représentant la fréquence d'excitation est pris en considération. Ensuite il s'agit d'évaluer l'amortissement dû à un phénomène transitoire en utilisant la géométrie des espaces de Riemann où la métrique ne dépend que des coordonnées de l'espace. La démarche s'appuie sur les concepts de la relativité générale. La solution au problème variationnel de la métrique donne les équations des géodésiques pour le système étudié. Les applications concernent la réponse forcée de 3 types de systèmes mécaniques. Elles permettent la validation expérimentale des modèles proposés.
