Book Synopsis Magnetic Properties of Metals by : H.P.J. Wijn
Download or read book Magnetic Properties of Metals written by H.P.J. Wijn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades the knowledge of the magnetic properties of the d transition elements and of their metallic alloys and compounds has increased widely. The improvement of preparation techniques for well-defined substances, the development of sophisticated measuring methods and above all the drive to obtain more insight in the origin of magnetic interactions in solids have resulted in the publication of many specific magnetic properties for an abundance of all kinds of metallic materials. The data assembled in this booklet are selected from the comprehensive compilation of magnetic and related properties of metals in the Landolt-Bornstein New Series Group III sub volumes 19a, band c. It has been attempted to include preferentially those properties which are of a basic character and which therefore are most often needed by scientists active in the field of solid state magnetism. In the field of magnetism, there is a gradual transition from the use of cgs/emu units to SI units. It was, however, not intended to represent all data in the units of one system, regardless of how nice this would have been from a systematic point of view. Instead, mostly preference was given to the system of units that was originally used by the authors whose work is quoted. Thus cgs/ emu units occur most frequently. Of colirse the user of the tables and figures is helped in several ways to convert the data to the units which he is most familiar with, see, e. g.

Book Synopsis Applied Sonochemistry by : T. J. Mason
Download or read book Applied Sonochemistry written by T. J. Mason and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2002-05-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power ultrasound has been used for many years in two specific industrial areas: cleaning and plastic welding. Over the last ten years an increasing interest has been shown in its potential for use over a much wider range of chemistry and processing which has been grouped together under the general title of sonochemistry. Most of these uses depend on the generation of acoustic cavitation in liquid media but this text, while underlining the importance of the physics and mathematics of cavitation, mainly concentrates on applications of the technology. After an introduction to the topic and some historical background to the uses of power ultrasound the general principles of acoustic cavitation are explored including some background physics, bubble dynamics and factors which influence cavitation. The remainder of the book incorporates a series of applications of sonochemistry which illustrate the types of physical and chemical effects of ultrasonically induced cavitation which will interest chemists and engineers alike. Amongst the major topics included are chemical synthesis, environmental protection and remediation of water, sewage and soils, polymer synthesis and processing, electrochemistry including both analytical and synthetic aspects and plating. The final chapter reviews the range of ultrasonic equipment available in the laboratory and the progress made towards the scale-up of sonochemistry. The level is introductory to semi-advanced and no topic has been taken to a particularly specialist level since it is intended that this should be of general interest to readers with a scientific background.

Book Synopsis Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals by : Agnes Buka
Download or read book Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals written by Agnes Buka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book Synopsis The London Underground and the public-private partnership agreements by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee
Download or read book The London Underground and the public-private partnership agreements written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-25 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report from the Transport Committee, examines London Underground and the Public-Private Partnership Agreements. The Government originally announced proposals for modernising the London Underground network system via Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements in 1998. Three contracts were drawn up with: (i) Tube Lines for the maintenance and renewal of the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Northern Lines; (ii) with Metronet Rail BVC for the maintenance and renewal of the Bakerloo, Central, Victoria & Waterloo & City Lines; (iii) with Metronet Rail SSL, responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the "sub-surface lines": the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan & East London Lines. These PPP Agreements, 30 years in duration, were arrangements to maintain, renew and upgrade parts of London Underground by private sector infrastructure companies (Infracos), whilst London Underground is responsible for services to customers. The PPP Agreements also set out a performance-related incentive and penalty scheme to remunerate the Infracos for the improvements they make to the network. In May 2007, Metronet admitted an overspend of £1 billion and was refused access to loan facilities by the banks. It then made a reference to the PPP Arbiter, which in turn triggered an Extraordinary Review (which occurs when extra costs are incurred above the level allowed for the bid). Metronet put in a bid for £551m but the PPP Arbiter provisionally concluded that a sum of £121m was appropriate. Metronet subsequently went into administration on 18 July 2007. The report sets out a number of conclusions and recommendations, including: contracts that were supposed to deliver 35 station upgrades, in fact delivered only 14, 40% of the requirement; stations that were supposed to cost Metronet SSL £2m, cost £7.5m, with only 65% of schedule track renewal accomplished; the Committee criticises the consequences of the imposition of PPP on Transport for London, as a "lamentable state of affairs", with the future of most of London Underground's upgrade and maintenance work in doubt; the Committee states, that the Government should remember the failure of Metronet before it considers entering similar arrangements; that the Government should publish a candid analysis of the events preceding Metronet's collapse and its consequences; the Committee believe that the PPP model was flawed and probably inferior to traditional public-sector management; that the Government needs to prioritise transparency and clarity to taxpayers and ensure that any future contracts result in clear accountability.
Book Synopsis Magnetic Properties of Non-metallic Inorganic Compounds Based on Transition Elements by : Henricus P. J. Wijn
Download or read book Magnetic Properties of Non-metallic Inorganic Compounds Based on Transition Elements written by Henricus P. J. Wijn and published by . This book was released on with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Landolt-Börnstein Volume 27 deals with the magnetic properties of non-metallic inorganic compounds based on transition elements, such as there are pnictides, chalcogenides, oxides, halides, borates, and finally phosphates and silicates, the latter presented in this subvolume I.A preliminary survey of the contents of all subvolumes that have already appeared or have been planned to appear is printed on the inside of the front cover. The silicates are very complex systems, intensively studied in literature. They cover large classes of minerals as well as synthetic samples. In analyzing their magnetic and magnetically related properties we essentially followed the classification given by the Mineral Reference Manual (E.H. Nickel, N.C. Nickols, Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1991). Individual chapters are dedicated to orthosilicates, sorosilicates, cyclosilicates, inosilicate, phyllosilicates and tectosilicates. Due to the huge amount of data these chapters had to be spread over several subvolumes I1, I2, etc. . - In each chapter the different groups of minerals and synthetic silicates were distinctly analyzed in various sections. For each group, additional silicate minerals, more recently reported, as well as synthetic samples having related compositions and/or crystal structures were also considered. The silicates included in each section were firstly tabulated, mentioning their compositions. The solid solutions between the end member compounds were also described. The space groups and lattice parameters for most silicates were tabulated. Crystal structures of representative silicates were discussed in more detail and the atomic positions were given.
