Book excerpt: Small modular reactors (SMRs) are a recent advancement in commercial nuclear reactor design with growing interest worldwide. New SMR concepts, such as the Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor (MASLWR), must undergo a licensing processes established by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) prior to commercial operation. Given the lack of historical, full scale operating experience, a general uncertainty and sensitivity analysis methodology was developed to help aid SMR designs through this process. Uncertainty was quantified through the empirical cumulative distribution function (ECDF) created from a desired data set. Linear regression techniques were applied to measure sensitivity. This methodology was demonstrated through the thermal hydraulic subchannel analysis of the MASLWR concept using RELAP5-3D Version 4.0.3 and VIPRE-01 Mod 2.2.1. Twelve uncertain input parameters were selected. System response uncertainty in the minimum departure from nucleate boiling ratio (MDNBR), maximum fuel temperature, and maximum clad temperature was evaluated. These figures were shown to satisfy U.S. NRC regulatory requirements for steady state operation at the 95 percent probability and 95 percent confidence level under the evaluated conditions. Sensitivity studies showed input parameters affecting local power generation within the core had a large influence on MDNBR, maximum fuel temperature, and maximum clad temperature.

Book excerpt: The Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor (MASLWR) is a small natural circulation pressurized light water reactor design that was developed by Oregon State University (OSU) and Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) under the Nuclear Energy Research Initiative (NERI) program to address the growing demand for energy and electricity. The MASLWR design is geared toward providing electricity to small communities in remote locations in developing countries where constructions of large nuclear power plants are not economical. The MASLWR reactor is designed to operate for five years without refueling and with fuel enrichment up to 8 %. In 2003, an experimental thermal hydraulic research facility also known as the OSU MASLWR Test Facility was constructed at Oregon State University to examined the performance of new reactor design and natural circulation reactor design concepts. This thesis is focused on the thermal hydraulics analysis and fuel performance analysis of the MASLWR prototypical cores with fuel enrichment of 4.25 % and 8 %. The goals of the thermal hydraulic analyses were to calculate the departure nucleate boiling ratio (DNBR) values, coolant temperature, cladding temperature and fuel temperature profiles in the hot channel of the reactor cores. The thermal hydraulic analysis was performed for steady state operation of the MASLWR prototypical cores. VIPRE Version 01 is the code used for all the computational modeling of the prototypical cores during thermal hydraulic analysis. The hot channel and hot rod results are compared with thermal design limits to determine the feasibility of the prototypical cores. The second level of analysis was performed with a fuel performance code FRAPCON for the limiting MASLWR fuel rods identified by the neutronic and thermal hydraulic analyses. The goals of the fuel performance analyses were to calculate the oxide thickness on the cladding and fission gas release (FGR). The oxide thickness results are compared with the acceptable design limits for standard fuel rods. The results in this research can be helpful for future core designs of small light water reactors with natural circulation.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the validation of the coupled codes developed in Finland for the safety analyses of the light water reactors in design basis accidents. The validation efforts and applications of the thermal hydraulics code SMABRE and the three-dimensional neutron kinetics codes are introduced for both the separate and coupled codes. The code development and coupling of codes for the safety analyses in Finland are discussed, and the present situation and possible future directions are described. The data for the code validation consists of the experimental data from test facilities, numerical benchmarks and data measured in real nuclear power plants. The nuclear core is relevant for the couplings of neutron kinetics and thermal hydraulics codes. Two European Union projects, in which ten transients at real VVER plants have been documented, as well as the other international benchmarks are dealt with as useful forums in the code validation. The simulation of plant measurements and several plant modeling aspects emerging from the validation work are gathered together. The main steam line break in different kinds of plants is dealt as an example of the application of the coupled codes in safety analysis. The coupling of a thermal hydraulic code with a fuel transient performance code is illustrated in the thesis as a new approach to performing the safety analyses. Another new approach is the sensitivity and uncertainty analyses performed for a Loviisa plant turbine trip case. In addition to this summary, the thesis consists of seven publications in appendices: five articles in scientific journals and two conference papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thermal hydraulic analysis of the International Reactor Innovative and Secure (IRIS) core has been performed. Thermal margins for steady state and a selection of Loss Of Flow Accidents have been assessed using three methodologies to account for uncertainty. The thermal hydraulic analysis has shown that the IRIS is designed with adequate thermal margin for steady state operation, the locked rotor/shaft shear accident (LR/SS) and for variants of the partial loss of flow accident. To treat uncertainties, three methods were used, ranging from conservative, deterministic methods, to more realistic and computationally demanding Monte Carlo-based methods. To facilitate the computational requirements of the thermal hydraulic analysis, a script- based interface was created for VIPRE. This scripted interface (written in Matlab) supplants the existing file-based interface. This interface allows for repeated, automatic execution of the VIPRE code on a script-modifiable input data, and parses and stores output data to disk. This endows the analyst with much greater power to use VIPRE in parametric studies, or using the Monte Carlo-based uncertainty analysis methodology. The Matlab environment also provides powerful visualization capability that greatly eases the task of data analysis.

Book excerpt: A nonlinear uncertainty analysis methodology based on the use of first and second order sensitivity coefficients is presented. As a practical demonstration, an uncertainty analysis of several responses of interest is performed for Test 177, which is part of a series of tests conducted at the Thermal-Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF) of the ORNL Engineering Technology Division Pressurized Water Reactor-Blowdown Heat Transfer (PWR-BDHT) program. These space- and time-dependent responses are: mass flow rate, temperature, pressure, density, enthalpy, and water qualtiy - in several volumetric regions of the experimental facility. The analysis shows that, over parts of the transient, the responses behave as linear functions of the input parameters; in these cases, their standard deviations are of the same order of magnitude as those of the input parameters. Otherwise, the responses exhibit nonlinearities and their standard deviations are considerably larger. The analysis also shows that the degree of nonlinearity of the responses is highly dependent on their volumetric locations.

Book excerpt: REPP, a digital computer method for designing pressure water and boiling water reactor cores within specified heat transfer and fuel centerline temperature limits is presented. The method incorporates the Westinghouse W-2 and W-3 empirical correlations and a theoretical hot channel model to predict burnout conditions in a rod bundle. Two geometries are considered; rods in a triangular array and rods in a square lattice. The heat transfer problem solved is a one-dimensional analysis. Pressure drop is considered for four types of fuel-pin spacers. Variable heat generation rate through the fuel-pin and sintering in low density fuels are also included.
