Book excerpt: Looking at the dry anatomical and physiological facts even a person without medical knowledge will understand the importance of a functional lymphatic system and its impact on general health. Yet this important part of our immune system has been almost completely ignored. If it would not have been for the relentless efforts of our lymphedema support groups over the past 15 years to create awareness about lymphedema, many patients would still believe that the occurrence of arm or breast lymphedema is an unavoidable side effect of cancer therapy one has to accept. Not only cancer patients benefit from Manual Lymph Drainage, everybody can take advantage of the gentle detoxifying properties to maintain health. The age group of patients I personally treated successfully with Manual Lymph Drainage ranges from 7 days to 103 years old.

Book excerpt: When Dr. Vodder discovered the undividable teamwork between the immune system and the lymphatic system around 1930, he also came to the conclusion that there had to be a connection between the lymphatic system and the detoxification of the brain. Without having reliable scientific proof available, Dr. Vodder developed a manual treatment protocol to stimulate the lymph flow, including inner mouth drainage, which he presented at a medical conference in Paris, France, in 1935. Manual lymphatic drainage has been taught and applied throughout Europe ever since with great success for various ailments. Thanks to Dr. Jonathan Kipnis, director of the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia at the University of Virginia, who recently came across the scientific evidence of how the lymphatic brain detoxification is accomplished, which is basically via lymph capillaries piggybacking on the back of the ophthalmic and olfactory nerves. (By simply applying a full-body manual lymphatic drainage, the average speed of lymph flow is temporarily increased by 20 percent.) Despite all technological accomplishments in medicine, the importance of the lymphatic system has been broadly overlooked. Because we are surrounded by chemicals, most of them toxic, I will explain how important a well-functioning lymphatic system is for maintaining overall health.

Book excerpt: Publication of the Proceedings of the Fourth and Fifth International Congresses of Lymphology celebrates the 10th anni versary of the founding of the International Society of Lymphology, a SOO-member scientific association representing the world's fore most authorities on lymph nodes, lymphatics, lymphocytes, and lymph in health and disease. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach and a wide variety of techniques including visualization, interruption, ablation, diversion, sampling, and characterization of regional lymph and lymphatic pathways, Congress participants from more than 40 different nations delved into such varied topics as lymphatic spread of cancer, tumor immunology, propulsion of lymph, microcir culatory physiology, improved methods of tumor detection and diag nosis, electron microscopy of lymphatic capillaries, lymphoscopy, immunoprotein chemistry, relationship of viruses to neoplasia, radiotherapy of lymphomas, structure and function of normal and abnormal lymphocytes, transplantation biology, lymphvascular sur gery, edema including lymphedema and effusion, portal hypertension, filariasis, congenital lymphatic malformations, and protein-losing enteropathy and nephropathy. Only a few years after William Harvey discovered the circula tion of blood, Gaspar Asellius "discovered" the lymphatic system. When asked in the twilight of his career to enter the raging con troversy about this new circulation, Harvey responded, "It is useless for you to spur me to gird myself to any new investigations seeing now that I am not only ripe in years but also weary. It seems to me indeed that I am entitled to ask for my honorable dis charge from duty.

Our goal is to provide you with a survivor's road map. --Dr. Ernest H. Rosenbaum * More than 30 medical professionals reveal insights on surviving cancer to empower cancer survivors and their caregivers, as well as the doctors who manage their continued care. The CDC's National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship estimates that there are 9.6 million persons living following a cancer diagnosis. And this number is strictly related to patients. It does not include family members, friends, or caregivers. For anyone approaching life from the perspective of remission, respected oncologist Dr. Ernest Rosenbaum leads a team of 34 oncology specialists and medical contributors--some of whom are both doctors and survivors themselves--in creating a guide specifically geared for cancer survivorship. The growing number of people approaching life post-cancer will find solace, understanding, and opportunity with information specifically geared to managing the lingering effects of cancer treatment, such as: * Lifestyle changes to improve health and longevity * What survivors need to know following anticancer therapy * How to manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy * How to set goals for the future
