Richard Sanders involves primary research in seven villages and four countries in China that have adopted ecological agriculture. He examines the concept of sustainable development generally and analyses China’s political-economic policies towards the countryside since 1949, the impacts on the environment and the state of China’s environmental protection. The study addresses three main questions: 1. Is Chinese ecological agriculture worth adopting - specifically does CEA promise a form of sustainable rural development? 2. To the extent that it does, what are the social, political and economic conditions in the Chinese countryside which most favour its extension? 3. To the extent that these conditions are restrictive, what can the Chinese authorities do to make them less so and thus encourage its extension? The study concludes that the CEA, despite certain difficulties and problems, holds out the prospect of a more sustainable future for the rural economy than more usual forms of activity in the Chinese countryside. It finds that the conditions for adopting CEA are restrictive and that while the Chinese government is in favour of extending CEA it must reconsider questions of land management and ownership and assess long-term needs.

A literature review focuses on the assumptions, methodologies and models of reconstructing historical land-use datasets while addresses accuracy evaluation issues. Historical population size, its growth rate, and the evolution of spatial-temporal patterns of farmland in China have also been discussed. Almost all available historical data about farmland such as historical documents, archives, taxation records, statistics and research outcomes have been collected to reconstruct the amount of historical farmland. With a few principles and assumptions, a delicate Cellular Automaton (CA) and Multi-Agents (MAS) model based on bottom-up management scheme has been applied to derive the spatial-temporal distribution of farmland with the 1km*1km grid resolution for the period between 1661 and 1980 in China. Suggestions for future studies related to reconstructing historical land-use changes are then provided.

Book excerpt: How is the China-Africa agricultural relationship conceptualized and realized at the intersections of large-scale socio-political, environmental, and economic processes? The goal of this dissertation is to disentangle some pieces of this structure by means of several qualitative and quantitative modeling approaches. Chapter 1 discusses a novel application of topic modeling to China-Africa academic literature, in two languages. Chapter 2 investigates the potential of the telecoupling framework to tease out the effects of Chinese investment on agricultural development in Africa, despite the fact that almost no Chinese investment goes directly to the agricultural sector. Chapter 3 presents multi-criteria decision modeling as one method to predict where direct Chinese investment in African agriculture might occur. This work presents multiple applications of methodologies underutilized in the study of China-Africa agricultural systems. The models used in this dissertation also explicitly state their data inputs and assumptions about the behavior of the system under study. In doing so, they both reinforce that more data is needed to understand any long-term trends in China-Africa agricultural systems and draw attention to the specific gaps in current data. Finally, the conclusions drawn by this research push back against the idea of a singular "Chinese model" of development that can be applied to Africa and instead highlight how different facets of China-Africa agricultural systems emerge under different assumptions and vary dramatically across the continent.
