Mathematicians, in particular in Italy, are becoming increasingly aware of this new trend and are engaged in bridging the gap between highly specialized mathematical research and the emerging demand for innovation from industry. The contributions in this volume provide both R&D workers in industry with a general view of existing skills, and academics with state-of-the-art applications of mathematics to real-world problems, which may also be incorporated in advanced courses.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, I have collected several papers which were presented at the international conference called "Venice-2/Symposium on Applied and In dustrial Mathematics". Such a conference was held in Venice, Italy, between June 11 and 16,1998, and was intended as the follow-up of the very successful similar event (called "Venice-1/Symposium on Applied and Industrial Math ematics"), that was also organized in Venice in October 1989. The Venice-1 conference ended up with a Kluwer volume like this one. I am grateful to Kluwer for having accepted to publish the present volume, the aim of which is to update somehow the state-of-the-art in the field of Ap plied Mathematics as well as in that of the nowadays rather more developed area of Industrial Mathematics. The most of the invited (key-note) speakers contributed to this volume with a paper related to their talk. There are, in addition·, a few significant contributed papers, selected on the basis of their quality and relevance to the present-time research activities. The topics considered in the conference range from rather general sub jects in applied and numerical analysis, to more specialized subjects such as polymers and disordered media, granular flow, semiconductor mathematics, superconductors, elasticity, tomography and other inverse problems, financial modeling, photographic sciences, etc. The papers collected in this volume provide a selection of them. It is clear from the previous list that some attention has been paid to relatively new and emerging fields.

Book excerpt: This second part of Continuum Thermodynamics is designed to match almost one-to-one the chapters of Part I. This is done so that the reader studying thermodynamics will have a deepened understanding of the subjects covered in Part I. The aims of the book are in particular: the illustration of basic features of some simple thermodynamical models such as ideal and viscous fluids, non-Newtonian fluids, nonlinear solids, interactions with electromagnetic fields, and diffusive porous materials. A further aim is the illustration of the above subjects by examples and simple solutions of initial and boundary problems as well as simple exercises to develop skills in the construction of interdisciplinary macroscopic models.

The book delineates the main ideas leading to the authors' variant of the energy method. These can be also applied to other variants of the energy method. The importance of the book lies in its focussing on the best concrete results known in the domain of fluid flows stability and in the systematic treatment of mathematical instruments used in order to reach them.

The method of maximum entropy in the mean automatically takes care of the constraints. It consists of a technique for transforming a large dimensional inverse problem into a small dimensional non-linear variational problem. A variety of mathematical aspects of the maximum entropy method are explored as well. Contents:A Collection of Linear Inverse ProblemsThe Basics about Linear Inverse ProblemsRegularization in Hilbert Spaces: Deterministic and Stochastic ApproachesMaxentropic Approach to Linear Inverse ProblemsFinite Dimensional ProblemsSome Simple Numerical Examples and Moment ProblemsSome Infinite Dimensional ProblemsTomography, Reconstruction from Marginals and Transportation ProblemsNumerical Inversion of Laplace TransformsMaxentropic Characterization of Probability DistributionsIs an image Worth a Thousand Words? Readership: Researchers in mathematical modeling. Keywords:Inverse Problems;Constrained Inverse Problems;Maximum Entropy;Maximum Entropy in the MeanKey Features:There are no other books using the method of maximum entropy in the mean to solve constrained linear problems with error in the dataIt includes interactive software, that can be used to solve many problemsReviews: “This book serves as lecture notes and is suitable for a graduate-level course on inverse problems. It covers a broad subject, gives explanations in sufficient detail, and helps readers learn to apply the presented methods. The book includes a nice collection of inverse problems and strategies to solve them, offers examples, and maintains a good balance between theoretical and applied aspects of the subject.” Mathematical Reviews “This monograph provides a thorough survey of maximum entropy methods for linear inverse problems. It is well written. This text can be recommended to experts as well as graduate students interested in the stochastic connection in inverse problems.” Zentralblatt MATH

The book illustrates some important applications issued from real data sets, real physical and natural phenomena as well as real applications in different fields, and consequently, presents to the readers the opportunity to implement fractal analysis in their specialties according to the step-by-step guide found in the book.Besides advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and senior researchers, this book may also serve scientists and research workers from industrial settings, where fractals and multifractals are required for modeling real-world phenomena and data, such as finance, medicine, engineering, transport, images, signals, among others. For the theorists, rigorous mathematical developments are established with necessary prerequisites that make the book self-containing. For the practitioner often interested in model building and analysis, we provide the cornerstone ideas.
