Book excerpt: Adaptive sampling, which select samples sequentially, is known to be more efficient than traditional non-adaptive sampling and fixed design procedures. However, most of the methods are developed based on relatively small and well-defined regions. These assumptions are often violated in environmental studies we faced today because they invariably involve populations distributed over a large space with irregular sampling frame. A new sampling plan is proposed which enhances the estimation efficiency by taking into account the shape of the sampling region and incorporating a novel adaptive procedure. Unbiased estimators, an optimal sampling criterion, and a heuristic search algorithm is introduced. Applications to real examples are presented, which show remarkable improvement in estimation efficiency using the proposed plan over existing methods. Unlike environmental studies, design of computer experiments has been widely investigated, however, most of the designs are chosen in advance without utilizing any information from the response, which results in insufficient information. We introduce a new class of sequential designs for computer experiments. It is model-free and constructed based on space-filling designs. The construction procedure, design-unbiased estimators, and some improvements using Rao-Blackwellization are proposed. More importantly, we introduce a refinement that provides better control over sample size and avoids replicates in the final sample. We demonstrate this new class of sequential designs are sampling-wise efficient by a simulation study and a IBM data center thermal management example.

As a first step toward a remedy, meta-models are built to mimic the response surface at a much lower query cost. We cover a time-tested technology specifically tailored to limited-data scenarios called Bayesian hybrid modeling (GEBHM) developed and maintained at General Electric (GE) research. GEBHM offers Bayesian mean and principled uncertainty predictions allowing a second technology called intelligent design and analysis of experiments (GE-IDACE/IDACE) to perform the optimization task using an adaptive sampling strategy. This chapter first covers the theoretical framework of both GEBHM and GE-IDACE. Then, the impact of GEBHM/GE-IDACE is demonstrated on multiple real-world engineering applications including additive manufacturing, combustion testing, and computational fluid dynamic design modeling. GEBHM and GE-IDACE are used daily and extensively within GE with huge impact in the form of 30,Äì90% cost reduction and superior engineering designs of competitive products.

With a single mobile sensor, several approaches are presented to solve the problem of where to sample next to maximally and simultaneously reduce uncertainty in the field estimate and uncertainty in the localisation of the mobile sensor while respecting the dynamics of the time-varying field and the mobile sensor. A case study of mapping a forest fire is presented. Multiple static and mobile sensors are considered next, and distributed algorithms for adaptive sampling are developed resulting in the Distributed Federated Kalman Filter. However, with multiple resources a possibility of deadlock arises and a matrix-based discrete-event controller is used to implement a deadlock avoidance policy. Deadlock prevention in the presence of shared and routing resources is also considered. Finally, a simultaneous and adaptive localisation strategy is developed to simultaneously localise static and mobile sensors in the WSN in an adaptive manner. Experimental validation of several of these algorithms is discussed throughout the book.
