Book excerpt: In the paper the issues related to identification and control of the drive system with an elastic joint has been presented. The NKF is proposed to provide on-line identification of the mechanical parameters of the two-mass system. The time constants of the shaft and the load machine are estimated simultaneously with high accuracy on the basis of the electromagnetic torque and motor speed. These parameters are used to calculate the gain coefficients of the advanced control structure for the two-mass system. Then the control structure with additional feedbacks, which allows to damp the torsional vibrations of the two-mass system effectively, is introduced. In this case the LKF is applied as an estimator of the non-measurable state variables such as the shaft torque, load speed as well as the load torque. Parameters of the covariance matrices Q and R of both considered estimators are selected using the genetic algorithm with special cost functions. The application of the global optimization technique allows to reach the global solution according to the defined cost function. However, the application of the genetic algorithm is possible only as an off-line process due to a long calculation time. The presented methods are complex and useful of the industrial drive with mechanical elasticity. They allow to ensure the optimal dynamics of the used estimators as well as the whole control structure. The proposed identification and control methods have been examined under simulation and experimental tests. The slight difference between the simulation and experimental results comes from the fact that the additional elements neglected under simulation study such as friction, nonlinear characteristics of the drive exit in the experimental set-up.

Book excerpt: Kalman filtering is an optimal state estimation process applied to a dynamic system that involves random perturbations. More precisely, the Kalman filter gives a linear, unbiased, and min imum error variance recursive algorithm to optimally estimate the unknown state of a dynamic system from noisy data taken at discrete real-time intervals. It has been widely used in many areas of industrial and government applications such as video and laser tracking systems, satellite navigation, ballistic missile trajectory estimation, radar, and fue control. With the recent development of high-speed computers, the Kalman filter has become more use ful even for very complicated real-time applications. lnspite of its importance, the mathematical theory of Kalman filtering and its implications are not well understood even among many applied mathematicians and engineers. In fact, most prac titioners are just told what the filtering algorithms are without knowing why they work so well. One of the main objectives of this text is to disclose this mystery by presenting a fairly thor ough discussion of its mathematical theory and applications to various elementary real-time problems. A very elementary derivation of the filtering equations is fust presented. By assuming that certain matrices are nonsingular, the advantage of this approach is that the optimality of the Kalman filter can be easily understood. Of course these assump tions can be dropped by using the more well known method of orthogonal projection usually known as the innovations approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kalman filters are often used to estimate the state variables of a dynamic system. However, in the application of Kalman filters some known signal information is often either ignored or dealt with heuristically. For instance, state variable constraints (which may be based on physical considerations) are often neglected because they do not fit easily into the structure of the Kalman filter. This paper develops two analytic methods of incorporating state variable inequality constraints in the Kalman filter. The first method is a general technique of using hard constraints to enforce inequalities on the state variable estimates. The resultant filter is a combination of a standard Kalman filter and a quadratic programming problem. The second method uses soft constraints to estimate state variables that are known to vary slowly with time. (Soft constraints are constraints that are required to be approximately satis- fied rather than exactly satisfied.) The incorporation of state variable constraints increases the computational effort of the filter but significantly improves its estima- tion accuracy. The improvement is proven theoretically and shown via simulation results. The use of the algorithm is demonstrated on a linearized simulation of a turbofan engine to estimate health parameters. The turbofan engine model con- tains 16 state variables, 12 measurements, and 8 component health parameters. It is shown that the new algorithms provide improved performance in this example over unconstrained Kalman filtering.

First, we briefly discuss the principles of Kalman filter and its variations including extended Kalman filter (EKF) and adaptive Kalman filter (AKF). Later on, we illustrate the applicability of Kalman filters for joint tracking of several optical transmission impairments, simultaneously, by formulating the state space model (SSM) and detailing the principles. A detailed methodology is presented for the joint tracking of linear and nonlinear phase noise along with amplitude noise using EKF. Also, approaches to enhance the performance obtained by EKF by combining with other existing digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are presented. Frequency and phase offset estimation using a two stage linear Kalman filter (LKF)/EKF is also discussed. A cascaded structure of LKF and EKF by splitting the SSM to jointly mitigate the effects of polarization, phase and amplitude noise is also presented. The numerical analysis concludes that the Kalman filter based approaches outperform the conventional methods with better tracking capability and faster convergence besides offering more feasibility for real-time implementations.

Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is the application of the linear filtering theory to the vibration of structures in a fluid. Emphasis is placed on the mathematical models which, in the theory of systems, characterize the state of a dynamic system. The mathematical models are in the form of linear Ito stochastic differential equations. Discretization of the models, which leads to straightforward computer applications, is also discussed. The book also presents an approach to nonlinear problems based on the expansion of random functions in a series. To elucidate the proposed approach, examples on the application of Kalman filters, which refer to the vibrations of cylinders in waves, are cited. This provides a practical orientation to complement the proposed theory and contributes to a clearer and deeper understanding of the subject matter.
