Book excerpt: Using correlations at the cathode to tailor a beam's eigen-emittances is a recent concept made useful by the symplectic nature of Hamiltonian systems such as beams in accelerators. While introducing correlations does not change the overall 6-dimensional phase space volume, it can change the partitioning of this volume into the longitudinal and two transverse emittances, which become these eigen-emittances if all the initial correlations are unwound and removed. In principle, this technique can be used to generate beams with highly asymmetric emittances, such as those needed for the next generation of very hard X-ray free-electron lasers. This approach is based on linear correlations, and its applicability will be limited by the magnitude of nonlinear effects in photoinjectors which will lead to mixing in phase space that cannot be unwound downstream. Here, we review the eigen-emittance concept and present a linear eigen-emittance design leading to a highly partitioned, and transverse ultra-bright, electron beam. We also present numerical tools to examine the evolution of the eigen-emittances in realistic accelerator structures and results indicating how much partitioning is practical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most existing electron sources extract electrons from conductors. Since the actual temperature inside the conductor is much less than the Fermi temperature of the conduction electrons, the electron degeneracy {delta}{sub f} is close to 1, the maximum allowed by the Pauli exclusion principle. However, during extraction several factors conspire together to reduce {delta}{sub f} many orders of magnitude, limiting the achieved values to {approx} 10{sup -5}. A new concept is described for building a novel electron source designed to produce a pulsed beam with {delta}{sub f} {approx} 2 10{sup -3} and longitudinal emittance four orders of magnitude smaller than currently achieved values. This high brightness, low longitudinal emittance regime enables a wide range of novel applications that utilize angstrom-scale spatial resolution and eV-scale energy resolution. The current state of a proof-of-principle experiment conducted at LBNL is also described.

Book excerpt: A high-brightness pulsed electron source, which has the potential for many useful applications in electron microscopy, inverse photo-emission, low energy electron scattering experiments, and electron holography has been described. The source makes use of Cs atoms in an atomic beam. The source is cycled beginning with a laser pulse that excites a single Cs atom on average to a band of high-lying Rydberg nP states. The resulting valence electron Rydberg wave packet evolves in a nearly classical Kepler orbit. When the electron reaches apogee, an electric field pulse is applied that ionizes the atom and accelerates the electron away from its parent ion. The collection of electron wave packets thus generated in a series of cycles can occupy a phase volume near the quantum limit and it can possess very high brightness. Each wave packet can exhibit a considerable degree of coherence.

Book excerpt: The capability of making very low-emittance electron beams of temporally short, high charge bunches has opened up exciting new possibilities in basic and applied science. Two notable applications are high energy electron-positron linear colliders for particle physics, and fourth-generation light sources consisting of linac-driven Free-Electron Lasers (FEL), both of which represent significant programmatic potential for the Laboratory in the future. The technologies contributing to low-emittance electron beams and their applications, namely precision fabrication, ultra-short pulse lasers, and RF photocathode injectors, are all areas of Lab expertise, and the work carried out under this LDRD project further expanded our core-competency in advanced concept accelerators. Furthermore, high energy accelerators have become a cornerstone of the SBSS program, as illustrated by the recent development of proton radiography as a prime technology candidate for the Advanced Hydrotest Facility (AHF), which enhanced the significance of this project all the more. This was a one-year project to both advance the technology of, and participate in the science enabled by very low-emittance electron beams. The work centered around the two themes above, namely electron-positron linear colliders, and the new fourth-generation light sources. This work built upon previous LDRD investments, and was intended to emphasize accelerator physics experiments.

This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To take advantage of properties of laser-controlled photodiodes to produce electron beams, a new set of diode design criteria are needed. An analytical and numerical study of the geometrical and temporal factors that affect the design of high-brightness electron beams is presented. This study extends our previous work on this concept to include the effects of laser pulse shape, and emittance effects in the presence of rf fields. In general, the diode will not be space-charge limited. Therefore, the conventional Pierce electrode shapes are not appropriate. Furthermore, the finite temporal profile of the electron beams introduces a time-dependent space charge into the design problem. The approach taken here to minimize the emittance growth from the temporal profile of the space charge is to operate at low perveance. To obtain high currents, large electric fields are required. We exploit the fact that the electron emission is controlled by the laser and is independent of the voltage on the diode. The diode can then be driven by an rf field. In principle, operating at higher frequency allows higher breakdown limits, so the perveance can be made very small. However, operating at too high an rf frequency introduces other detrimental effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.

Written for researchers, the material is also suitable for use as a textbook in an advanced graduate course for students studying accelerator physics. The presentation starts with a brief review of the basic concept of wake potentials and coupling impedances in the vacuum chamber followed by a discussion on static and dynamic solutions of their effects on the particle beams. Special emphasis is placed separately on proton and electron machines. Other special topics of interest covered include Landau damping, BalakinOCoNovokhatskyOCoSmirnov damping, Sacherer''s integral equations, Landau cavity, saw-tooth instability, Robinson stability criteria, beam loading, transition crossing, two-stream instabilities, and collective instability issues of isochronous rings. After the formulation of an instability, readers are provided a thorough description of one or more experimental observations together with a discussion of the cures for the instability. Although the book is theory oriented, the use of mathematics has been minimized. The presentation is intended to be rigorous and self-contained with nearly all the formulas and equations derived."

This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.
