Book excerpt: High pressure fuel injection is a crucial process that impacts the subsequent steps of mixture preparation, ignition and combustion in diesel or gasoline direct injection engines. Experimental studies have revealed the mixing-controlled and local phase equilibrium characteristics of liquid vaporization in high injection pressure engine sprays. In this study an Equilibrium Phase (EP) spray model is explored. The model is developed based on jet theory and the phase equilibrium assumption, without modeling drop breakup, collision and finite-rate interfacial vaporization processes. The model development is carried out in an advanced version of KIVA-3vr2. The presently proposed EP spray model is validated extensively in simulations of the ECN Spray A, and in an optical diesel engine and in DISI gasoline sprays. The predictions of liquid/vapor penetration, fuel mass fraction distribution, heat release rate and emission formation are in good agreement with experimental data. In addition, good computational efficiency and grid-independency are also seen with the present EP model. The examined operating conditions cover wide ranges that are relevant to IC engines, which are 700-1400 K, 7.6-22.8 kg/m3 for diesel sprays, and 500-900 K, 3-9 kg/m3 for gasoline DISI sprays, respectively. Thermal radiation is another topic of interest in this work since it accounts for an important mechanism of heat transfer in engine combustion. The role of thermal radiation in engine combustion is investigated by implementing the Discrete Ordinate Method (DOM) model and the narrowband model into CFD code together with the EP spray model. Engine simulation results show that radiative heat loss accounts for about 9-18% of the total wall heat loss for operating loads from 4 to 14.5 bar gIMEP. A strong correlation is found between the global equivalence ratio and the fraction of radiative heat loss to total wall heat loss, which even applies in low temperature combustion modes. The participating gases of CO2, H2O and CO are found to be the dominant source of thermal radiation due to their abundancy in high temperature regions. Also, the cooling effect of thermal radiation is shown to have significant impact on the prediction of soot emissions.

To justify their use for the applications with dominant radiation heat transfer conditions, the implemented models need to be first appropriately validated on simple benchmark examples where the analytical solutions exist. The practical application discussed in this chapter considers the thermal radiation inside the vacuum vessel of the fusion reactor. Two representative benchmark examples are used to obtain the analytical solution and assess the accuracy of the real case simulations performed by CFD codes. The analytical solutions use the view factor method to calculate the net radiation heat flux on each radiating surface. Several numerical methods are available in the CFD codes to solve the thermal radiation problems. The discrete transfer method (DTM) is considered as one of the most efficient for solving the radiation fluxes between the surfaces in the case of radiatively non-participating fluid. Discussion includes description of fundamentals of analytical and numerical thermal radiation methods, validation of radiative heat exchange in simple enclosure problems, estimation of numerical errors and application to the practical case.

Book excerpt: The mechanisms governing the formation and destruction of soot in turbulent combustion are intimately coupled to thermal radiation due to the strong dependence of sooting processes and radiative loss on temperature. Detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions of the radiative and soot output from turbulent non-premixed flames are normally performed by parabolic algorithms. However, the modelling of combustion systems, such as furnaces and unwanted enclosure fires, often require a fully elliptic description of the flow field and its related physical phenomena. Thus, this thesis investigates the intimate coupling between radiative energy exchange and the mechanisms governing soot formation and destruction within a three-dimensional, general curvilinear CFD code. Thermal radiation is modelled by the discrete transfer radiation model (DTRM). Special emphasis is given to approximate solutions to the radiative transfer equation encompassing various models for the radiative properties of gases and soot. A new algorithm is presented, entitled the differential total absorptivity (DTA) solution, which, unlike alternative solutions, incorporates the source temperature dependence of absorption. Additionally, a weighted sum of gray gases (WSGG) solution is described which includes the treatment of gray boundaries. Whilst the DTA solution is particularly recommended for systems comprising large temperature differences, the WSGG solution is deemed most appropriate for numerical simulation of lower temperature diffusion flames, due to its significant time advantage. The coupling between radiative loss and soot concentration is investigated via a multiple laminar flamelet concept applied within the CFD simulation of confined turbulent diffusion flames burning methane in air at 1 and 3 atm. Flamelet families are employed relating individual sooting mechanisms to the level of radiative loss, which is evaluated by the DTRM formulated for emitting-absorbing mixtures of soot,
