Book Synopsis Pollutants in a Multimedia Environment by : Yoram Cohen
Download or read book Pollutants in a Multimedia Environment written by Yoram Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollutants released to the environment are distributed among the many environmental media such as air, water, soil, and vegetation, as the result of complex physical, chemical and biological processes. The possible environmental impact associated with chemical pollutants is related to their concentration levels and persistence in the various environmental compartments. Therefore, information regarding the migration of pollutants across environmental phase boundaries (eg., air-water, soil-water) and their accumulation in the environment is essential if we are to assess the potential environmental impact and the associated risks. In recent years it has become apparent that environmental pollution is a multimedia problem. Risk assessment and the design of appropriate pollution control measures require that we carefully consider the transport and accumulation of pollutants in the environment. We are now recognizing that the environment must be considered as a whole, and the scientific and regulatory approaches must consider the interactions of environmental media. It is also becoming apparent that single-medium approaches are partial and often counter-productive. On the other hand any multimedia program must carefully consider the rate of each environmental medium in the overall multimedia scheme.

Book Synopsis Computer Supported Risk Management by : Giampiero Beroggi
Download or read book Computer Supported Risk Management written by Giampiero Beroggi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in information technology provide opportunities for the development of computer systems that support risk managers in complex tasks. Leading experts report on the potentials and limitations concerning the use of computer systems in risk management. Their reports are based on many years of experience in their fields which include: risk analysis, systems engineering, geographic information systems, decision support systems, human--machine systems, and psychology. The book addresses four major issues in computer supported risk management: Conceptual aspects: the role, design, and use of computers in risk management Planning and policy analysis: transportation, equity analysis, emergency management, group decision making Operational decision making: nuclear power monitoring, emergency response, public safety warning, satellite tracking Commercial applications: GIS from IIASA, InterClair from IAEA, EPA software, cleanup decision support software survey. This book is meant for researchers, who will find the emerging issues in risk management that are motivated by the encounter of new tasks and novel technology; practitioners who will have descriptions and references of the state-of-the-art models and software; and students who will learn the basic concepts needed to develop advanced information and decision support systems in risk management.
Book Synopsis Fate of Pesticides and Chemicals in the Environment by : Jerald L. Schnoor
Download or read book Fate of Pesticides and Chemicals in the Environment written by Jerald L. Schnoor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1992-04-16 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A result of important bilateral scientific agreements between the U.S. and the Soviet Union on the fate of chemicals and pesticides in the environment. Written by experts in both countries, it familiarizes the reader with recent state-of-the-art research being conducted in the areas of agricultural management and water pollution control. A number of models are provided to give the reader a concise grasp of exposure and ecological risk assessments involving these pollutants. Focuses on the necessity to improve our deteriorating standards of public health, environmental science and technology with a total systems approach through the pooled talents of scientists and engineers.

Book Synopsis Integration of the Hydrologic Simulation Program, FORTRAN (HSPF) Watershed Water Quality Model Into the Watershed Modeling System (WMS) by : Patrick N. Deliman
Download or read book Integration of the Hydrologic Simulation Program, FORTRAN (HSPF) Watershed Water Quality Model Into the Watershed Modeling System (WMS) written by Patrick N. Deliman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of the watershed water quality model Hydrologic Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) into the Watershed Modeling System (WMS) was initiated as part of an overall goal of the Water Quality Research Program to provide water quality capabilities within the framework of a comprehensive graphical modeling environment for conducting hydrologic and water quality analysis. The WMS interface creates a way for the user to input a multitude of parameters into the input file and then to run HSPF to get the required output. The input parameters are linked to all the tools within WMS, including automated basin delineation and parameter definition using a graphical user interface. The objective of the interface developed in WMS is to provide graphical representation of HSPF data, as well as automate the definition of many of the required parameters. Many of the basic variables required for HSPF input are computed as part of WMS's basic functionality; additionally, specialty functions have been added to WMS to enable the usage of HSPF directly with data output from WMS. This report describes the initial linkage of HSPF into the WMS.
