Les proprietes de l'hydrogene solide sont discutees dans le contexte de l'experience de l'echo solide. In many cases, however, the system of interest is incompletely determined; for example, it may have no more than a certain probability of being in the precisely defined dynamical state characterized by a state vector. Because of this incomplete knowledge, a need for statistical averaging arises in the same sense as in classical physics. The density matrix was introduced by J. von Neumann in 1927 to describe statistical concepts in quantum mechanics. The main virtue of the density matrix is its analytical power in the construction of general formulas and in the proof of general theorems. The evaluation of averages and probabilities of the physical quantities characterizing a given system is extremely cumbersome without the use of density matrix techniques. The representation of quantum mechanical states by density matrices enables the maximum information available on the system to be expressed in a compact manner and hence avoids the introduction of unnecessary vari ables. The use of density matrix methods also has the advantage of providing a uniform treatment of all quantum mechanical states, whether they are completely or incom~'\etely known. Until recently the use of the density matrix method has been mainly restricted to statistical physics. In recent years, however, the application of the density matrix has been gaining more and more importance in many other fields of physics.

Book excerpt: This thesis shows how a combination of analytic and numerical techniques, such as a time dependent and finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) technique, can be used to obtain the physical properties of low dimensional quantum magnets with an unprecedented level of accuracy. A comparison between the theory and experiment then enables these systems to be used as quantum simulators; for example, to test various generic properties of low dimensional systems such as Luttinger liquid physics, the paradigm of one dimensional interacting quantum systems. Application of these techniques to a material made of weakly coupled ladders (BPCB) allowed the first quantitative test of Luttinger liquids. In addition, other physical quantities (magnetization, specific heat etc.), and more remarkably the spins-spin correlations – directly measurable in neutron scattering experiments – were in excellent agreement with the observed quantities. We thus now have tools to quantitatiively assess the dynamics for this class of quantum systems.

Book excerpt: In my thesis, static and dynamic properties of low-dimensional spin models were studied by means of a state of the art QMC method (SSE). As one among many numerical algorithms (e.g. DMRG, ED), the QMC proved to be a very flexible and high performance tool with access to dynamic correlation functions at finite temperatures and finite magnetic fields within the thermodynamic limit1. After detailed introduction of the QMC’s basic implementation, I provided yet unpublished information about the measurement of transverse (and longitudinal) imaginary time correlation functions for the spin S Heisenberg model. In addition to that, complications of the analytic continuation to the real axis were explained and two common Maximum Entropy algorithms (Bryan and Meshkov) introduced briefly. In my thesis, both algorithms have been implemented and contrasted in regard to their performance and quality of the continuation, clearly favoring Bryan’s method which is a standard least square algorithm based on Newton iterations with however highly optimized search directions in the multi-dimensional solution space.

Book excerpt: Since the first successful NMR experiments in 1946 it was well appreciated that dynamic processes play an important role in the NMR spectroscopy of bulk matter [1]. Early theories on the dependence of the relaxation parameters Tl and T2 on the motions of nuclear spins were successful in explaining the dipolar broadening of the NMR signal in solids and the motional narrowing in liquids [2]. With the discovery of chemical shifts and spin-spin couplings another type of dynamical process affect ing the NMR line shape became apparent, the chemical exchange. As a consequence, dynamical NMR studies split into two groups differing not only in the dynamical topics but also in the method of investigation: physical studies of the motion of spins in liquids and solids by measurement of the relaxation times of single resonances and, on the other hand, chemical studies based on band shape analysis of NMR spectra recorded under steady state conditions. The two fields of research lost some of their basic differences with the development of the Fourier transform NMR method [3], which allows the measurement of relaxation times of different resonances at the same time, i. e. the study of differential motional behavior of different parts of mole cules, thus providing a new tool in conformational analyses. For example, informa tion can be obtained by this method on the relative importance of overall motions and internal motions [4].
