Book excerpt: Ion-atom collisions in the intermediate perturbation regime have received considerable attention over the last few years, both from experimental and theoretical perspectives. As the excitation, electron loss, and electron capture processes are of the same order of magnitude in this velocity region, the difficulty for theoreticians resides in the large Hilbert space for the active electron and for experimentalists in the extraction of information on unique collision channels. In the case of excitation of helium-like ions colliding with atomic targets, which is the focus of this paper, account must be taken of a parasite process giving rise to the same signature as an excitation in the projectile X-ray spectrum - that of loss-exchange (i. e. loss of a projectile electron into the continuum accompanied by electron capture from the target into a projectile state).

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a growing concern about the health of workers exposed to fumes and gases in the welding industry. Of particular interest are the hazards associated with exposure to heavy metals. Welding fumes contain a mixture of such metals, in the form of oxides, all with differing degrees of toxicity, thus complicating the quantitative assessment of the hazard involved. Routine monitoring and analysis of the fumes is used to assess exposure in relation to the relevant occupational exposure limits and, if non-compliance is determined, to implement control measures. The aim of this study is to assess the relative merits of the particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique as an alternative, multi-elemental, method of analysis.
