Book excerpt: Climate change not only involves rising temperatures but it can also alter the hydro-meteorological parameters of a region and the corresponding changes emerging in the various biotic or abiotic environmental features. One of the results of climate change has been the impact on the sediment yield and its transport. These changes have implications for various other environmental components, particularly soils, water bodies, water quality, land productivity, sedimentation processes, glacier dynamics, and risk management strategies to name a few. This volume presents a diverse collection of case studies from researchers across the globe examining the impacts of climate change on river basin management in various geographical, hydrological, and socioeconomic contexts. The case studies yield important insights that can inform strategies to build resilience and adapt river basins to a changing climate.

This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate and anthropogenic changes impact the conditions of erosion and sediment transport in rivers. Rainfall variability and, in many places, the increase of rainfall intensity have a direct impact on rainfall erosivity. Increasing changes in demography have led to the acceleration of land cover changes in natural areas, as well as in cultivated areas, and, sometimes, in degraded areas and desertified landscapes. These anthropogenized landscapes are more sensitive to erosion. On the other hand, the increase in the number of dams in watersheds traps a great portion of sediment fluxes, which do not reach the sea in the same amount, nor at the same quality, with consequences on coastal geomorphodynamics. This book is dedicated to studies on sediment fluxes from continental areas to coastal areas, as well as observation, modeling, and impact analysis at different scales from watershed slopes to the outputs of large river basins. This book is concentrated on a number of keywords: “erosion” and “sediment transport”, “model” and “practice”, and “change”. The keywords are briefly discussed with respect to the relevant literature. The contributions in this book address observations and models based on laboratory and field data, allowing researchers to make use of such resources in practice under changing conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses challenges and opportunities in the Energy-Water-Environment (EWE) nexus, with a particular focus on research and technology development requirements in harsh desert climates. Its chapters include selected contributions presented during the 1st international conference on sustainable Energy-Water-Environment nexus in desert climates (ICSEWEN-19) held at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) in Doha, Qatar in December 2019. This volume is comprised of three main chapters, each describing important case studies and progress on water, energy and environmental questions. A fourth chapter on policies and community outreach on these three areas is also included. This compilation aims to bridge the gap between research and industry to address the socioeconomic impacts of the nexus imbalance as perceived by scientists, industrial partners, and policymakers. The content of this book is of particular importance to graduate students, researchers and decision makers interested in understanding water, energy and environmental challenges in arid areas. Re searchers in environmental and civil engineering, chemistry, hydrology and environmental science can also find unique in-situ observations of the current nexus imbalance in deserts climate to validate their investigations. It is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in water, energy, environment and food sectors to understand the rapidly evolving landscape of the EWE nexus in arid areas. The analyses, observations and lessons-learned summarized herein are applicable to other arid areas outside North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as well, such as central Australia, the southwest of the United States and deserts in central Asia.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of the International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Humanity (ICATH’2021), held on November 26-27, 2021, in INSEA, Rabat, Morocco. ICATH’2021 was jointly co-organized by the National Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (INSEA) in collaboration with the Moroccan School of Engineering Sciences (EMSI), the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (IAV-Hassan II), the National Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (INPT), the National School of Mineral Industry (ENSMR), the Faculty of Sciences of Rabat (UM5-FSR), the National School of Applied Sciences of Kenitra (ENSAK) and the Future University in Egypt (FUE). ICATH’2021 was devoted to practical models and industrial applications related to advanced technologies for Humanity. It was considered as a meeting point for researchers and practitioners to enable the implementation of advanced information technologies into various industries. This book is helpful for PhD students as well as researchers. The 48 full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 105 submissions. The papers presented in the volume are organized in topical sections on synergies between (i) smart and sustainable cities, (ii) communication systems, signal and image processing for humanity, (iii) cybersecurity, database and language processing for human applications, (iV) renewable and sustainable energies, (V) civil engineering and structures for sustainable constructions, (Vi) materials and smart buildings and (Vii) Industry 4.0 for smart factories. All contributions were subject to a double-blind review. The review process was highly competitive. We had to review 105 submissions from 12 countries. A team of over 100 program committee members and reviewers did this terrific job. Our special thanks go to all of them.

Book excerpt: During the last twenty years, mutations within agricultural systems in France and Europe have brought on a spectacular worsening of soil erosion and degradation. This volume, contributed to by scientists from 25 countries, discusses how this risk can be evaluated, and which solutions should be adopted without radically disturbing the socio-economic orientation of major agricultural regions. It is an excellent starting point for the development of new research themes, and will be of great value to soil and environmental scientists, and to all those involved in land irrigation and drainage.
