Thus, such improved soil is not considered to be fit for core materials (i.e., impervious materials) for earth dam embankments. We have developed a method to repair embankments with crushed and compacted soil utilizing earth dam mud soil. This method enables embankments which rarely crack to be constructed. The improved soil was produced in the following manner. First, the stabilized soil was cured for a few days. The soil was then crushed, plowed, compacted, and re-stabilized, resulting in an improved soil that, although it had lower strength, at the maximum strength can only be generated by a large strain. In this paper, mechanical tests for soil specimens prepared in a laboratory and obtained from actual embankments were used to obtain the curing times till crushing, and the strength and deformation characteristics of the crushed-compacted soil. In addition, we carried out a dry-wet cycling test for endurance for the crushed-compacted soil, and examined the mechanical characteristics. Finally, we describe some actual examples where the present method has been applied.

These soils can exhibit low bearing strength, high volumetric instability, and freeze/thaw or wet/dry durability problems. Cement stabilization offers opportunities to improve these soils conditions. The objective of this study was to develop relationships between soil index properties, unconfined compressive strength and cement content. To achieve this objective, a laboratory study was conducted on 28 granular and non-granular materials obtained from 9 active construction sites in Iowa. The materials consisted of glacial till, loess, and alluvium sand. Type I/II Portland cement was used for stabilization. Stabilized and unstabilized specimens were prepared using Iowa State University 2 in. by 2 in. compaction apparatus. Specimens were prepared, cured, and tested for unconfined compressive strength (UCS) with and without vacuum saturation. Percent fines content (F200), AASHTO group index (GI), and Atterberg limits were tested before and after stabilization. The results were analyzed using multi-variate statistical analysis to assess influence of the various soil index properties on post-stabilization material properties. Results indicated that F200, liquid limit, plasticity index, and GI of the materials generally decreased with increasing cement content. The UCS of the stabilized specimens increased with increasing cement content, as expected. The average saturated UCS of the unstabilized materials varied between 0 and 57 psi. The average saturated UCS of stabilized materials varied between 44 and 287 psi at 4% cement content, 108 and 528 psi at t 8% cement content, and 162 and 709 psi at 12% cement content. The UCS of the vacuum saturated specimens was on average 1.5 times lower than that of the unsaturated specimens. Multi-variate statistical regression models are provided in this report to predict F200, plasticity index, GI, and UCS after treatment, as a function of cement content and soil index properties.

The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings. The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University. The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.

Usually, soil and soft soils cause difficulties in construction site when having low strength and low stiffness. To enhance the engineering property, soil needs to be stabilized. This study is an experimental base research where brick dust and cement are used to stabilize the soil to explore the more uses of raw materials like this as well as to improve the quality of soft soil at the proposed site of Manikdi, Dhaka. The soil is classified as a clayey soil and determined the plastic limit, liquid limit, specific gravity, grain size. Secondly, to compare the strength and characteristics of existing soil before and after treating with the combination of brick dust and cement. We used two different mixed ratio and natural soil to conduct this experiment. From unconfined compression strength test of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 483.7 kPa, 737.2 kPa and 967.8 kPa consequently. So, we found that the stress is increasing with increasing amount of cement and brick dust. From The grain size analysis, the Cu value of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 4.3, 5.06 and 3.25 consequently. Also we found that the Cc value of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 0.84, 0.879 and 0.83 consequently. So for this three cases the soil sample was poorly graded. From the Atterberg limit test the liquid limit for natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 36.07%, 34.63% and 33.17% conseq
