Book excerpt: Plato (428/427 or 424/423 - 348/347 BC) was an Athenian philosopher during the Classical period in Ancient Greece, founder of the Platonist school of thought and the Academy, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential individuals in human history, and the pivotal figure in the history of Ancient Greek and Western philosophy, along with his teacher, Socrates, and his most famous student, Aristotle. Plato has also often been cited as one of the founders of Western religion and spirituality. The so-called neoplatonism of philosophers such as Plotinus and Porphyry greatly influenced Christianity through Church Fathers such as Augustine.

There he stood fixed in thought and at noon attention was drawn to him, and the rumor ran through the wonder ing crowd that Socrates had been standing and thinking about something ever since the break -of day. At last, irr - the evening after supper, some Ionians out Of curiosity (i should explain that this was not in winter but in sum mer) brought out their mats and slept in the open air, that they might'watch him, and see whether he would stand all night. There he stood all night as well as all day, and the fol lowing morning; and with the return of light he offered up a prayer to the sun, and went his way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socrates: A Translation of the Apology, Crito, and Parts of the Phaedo of Plato Cence, and by including the preexistence of the soul, so as to be far more Platonic than Socratic. The Opinion of the real Socrates on these subjects may be inferred from his remark in the Apology, that, if there is any one point on which he would claim to be wiser than other men, it is this, that having no better knowledge than others of the world to come, he is likewise convinced that he has none. The same is true of all the dogmatic discourses on speculative subjects which are ascribed to Socrates by Plato. Still we must remember that it is through Plato that his master is best known and it is the Platonic Socrates quite as much as the real Socrates who has passed into history. Even Aristotle often quotes Plato's doctrines under the name of Socrates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt: ...by itself, freed as much as possible from the eyes and ears, and, in a word, from the whole body, as disturbing the soul, and not suffering it to acquire truth and wisdom, when it is in communion with it. Is not he the person, Simmias, if any one can, who will arrive at the knowledge of that which is?" 29 . "You speak with wonderful truth, Socrates," replied Simmias. "Wherefore," he said, "it necessarily follows from all this that some such opinion as this should be entertained by genuine philosophers, so that they should speak among themselves as follows: 'A by-path, as it were, seems to lead us on in our researches undertaken by reason, ' because so long as we are encumbered with the body, and our soul is contaminated with such an evil, we can never fully attain to what we desire; and this, we say, is truth. For the body subjects us to innumerable hinderances on account of its necessary support; and, moreover, if any diseases befall us, they impede us in our search after that which is; and it fills us with longings, desires, fears, all kinds of fancies, and a multitude of absurdities, so that, as it is said in real truth, by reason of the body it is never possible for us to make any advances in wisdom. 30 . For nothing else than the body and its desires occasion wars, seditions, and contests; for all wars among us arise on account of our desire to acquire wealth: and we are compelled to acquire wealth on account of the body, being enslaved to its service; and consequently on all these accounts we are hindered in the pursuit of philosophy. But the worst of all is, that if it leaves us any leisure, and we apply ourselves to the consideration of any subject, it constantly obtrudes itself in the midst of our researches, and occasions trouble and disturbance, and confounds us so that we are not able, by reason of it, to discern the truth. It has, then, in reality been demonstrated to us that if we are ever to know any thing purely, we must be separated...

Book excerpt: I know not, O Athenians! how far you have been influenced by my accusers for my part, in listening to them I almost forgot myself, so plausible were their arguments however, so to speak, they have said nothing true. But of the many falsehoods which they uttered I wondered at one of them especially, that in which they said that you ought to be on your guard lest you should be deceived by me, as being eloquent in speech. For that they are not ashamed of being forthwith convicted by me in fact, when I shall show that I am not by any means eloquent, this seemed to me the most shameless thing in them, unless indeed they call him eloquent who speaks the truth. For, if they mean this, then I would allow that I am an orator, but not after their fashion for they, as I affirm, have said nothing true, but from me you shall hear the whole truth.

Book excerpt: Plato's Apology, Crito And Phaedo of Socrates By Plato Greek Classics Translated By Henry Cary Introduction By Edward Brooks, Jr Plato, 348/347 BC, was a philosopher in Classical Greece. He was also a mathematician, student of Socrates, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science. In the words of A. N. Whitehead: The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. I do not mean the systematic scheme of thought which scholars have doubtfully extracted from his writings. I allude to the wealth of general ideas scattered through them. Plato's sophistication as a writer is evident in his Socratic dialogues; thirty-six dialogues and thirteen letters have been ascribed to him. Plato's writings have been published in several fashions; this has led to several conventions regarding the naming and referencing of Plato's texts. Plato's dialogues have been used to teach a range of subjects, including philosophy, logic, ethics, rhetoric, religion and mathematics. Plato is one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trial and death of Socrates (469-399 BCE) have almost as central a place in Western consciousness as the trial and death of Jesus. In four superb dialogues, Plato provides the classic account. Euthyphro finds Socrates outside the court-house, debating the nature of piety, while the Apology is his robust rebuttal of the charges of impiety and a defence of the philosopher's life. In the Crito, while awaiting execution in prison, Socrates counters the arguments of friends urging him to escape. Finally, in the Phaedo, he is shown calmly confident in the face of death, skilfully arguing the case for the immortality of the soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apology of Socrates and Crito: With Extracts From the Phaedo and Symposium and From Xenophon's Memorabilia This book was first published in 1885 and contained Plato's Apology and Orito. Its editor, Professor Louis Dyer, subsequently removed his residence to England. When the editors of the Cole lege Series of Greek Authors determined last year to issue a new edition, Professor Dyer felt that he was not sufficiently acquainted with the changes in conditions of collegiate instruction in Greek that have occurred in America during the past twenty years to undertake the task, and committed it to Professor Seymour. The new edition contains, in addition to the Apology and Orito, extracts from Plato's Phaedo and Symposium and from Xenophon's Memorabilia. Professor Seymour rewrote the introduction and the commentary on the first two dialogues, and added a commentary on the extracts and a vocabulary. The book was practically finished and nearly all in type before his death. The editors of the College Series had hoped that Professor Dyer.
