The series of visions is complex, but when complemented by prophetic material from the Old Testament, Jesus’ prophecies, and other Scriptures, a clear chronology is discerned. The text is divided into 80 passages which are presented in two-page studies, with Scripture on the left and commentary on the right. The text is explained clearly and naturally, emphasizing the fact that John’s series of visions is really a picture book, or a series of video clips, with much symbolism and metaphor that needs to be interpreted imaginatively, rather than literally. The Messianic reign on earth following Jesus’ return is regarded as the clear climax; glory for Jesus and glory for the saints. Evidence of a pre-tribulation rapture is scarce; rather, Revelation encourages the saints to faithfully endure persecution, even martyrdom, knowing that they have a glorious future here on earth and on into eternity. The time is drawing near. The nation of Israel is regathered in their land and recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. Globalization is increasing, the gospel is being preached in the whole world, and the 2000th anniversary of the Church is approaching. Anti-Christian forces are everywhere; secular humanism, militant Islam, Chinese and Indian nationalism. In these last days, a clear understanding of the Apocalypse is vital.

The Book of Revelation provides a model of history in which apocalypse is followed by millennium, but in their various ways the major Romantic poets - Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, and Shelley - question and even at times undermine the possibility of a successful secularization of this model. No matter how confidently the sequence of apocalypse and millennium seems to be affirmed in some of the major works of the period, the issue is always in doubt: the fear that millennium may not ensue emerges as a significant, if often repressed, theme in the great works of the period. Related to it is the tension in Romantic poetry between conflicting models of history itself: history as teleology, developing towards end time and millennium, and history as purposeless cycle. This subject-matter is traced through a selection of works by the major poets, partly through an exposition of their underlying intellectual traditions, and partly through a close examination of the poems themselves.
