Book Synopsis The Apocalypse... by : Dr. Jana Jones McDowell
Download or read book The Apocalypse... written by Dr. Jana Jones McDowell and published by Dr. Jana Jones McDowell. This book was released on with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we will take the unique approach and read the Book of Revelation as it was meant to be read. That is we will read Revelation exactly as Apostle John wrote it, with his Hebraisms and his Jewish writing style. Taking into account John’s Jewish mindset we will embark on a very different approach to interpreting his Divinely given visions – the visions which later came to be compiled into what is now known as the Book of Revelation. First, we must look at the Book of Revelation in context and realize that it is a letter written in the first-century by a Jewish Christ follower who lived in a Roman dominated society where Roman/Greek gods were idolized and worshiped. With this in mind, we need to understand John’s mindset – being that he thought in Hebrew, but wrote in the language of the land, which was Greek. We also must realize that John’s letter was meant for a predominately Jewish audience, who may or may not have believed that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, who lived under Roman rule, and therefore, dominated spiritual and cultural values.... values that went against those of the Jewish people who worshipped the God of Israel. Therefore, John’s letter to the people of the churches in Asia Minor was very anti-Roman. Characteristic of ancient Jewish literature was a very unique writing style. Thoroughly Jewish, John wrote with this 7 characteristic style and the Jewish people were accustomed to reading it. What are the implications of interpreting John’s letter exactly as he wrote it, with its characteristic Jewish style? Actually, several very different ideas emerge as to both the structure and the timeline of the Book of Revelation, creating interpretations that are quite unlike interpretations we may have been exposed to when studying the Bible through traditional methods. For instance, we will see that the timeline of the Book of Revelation is multidimensional and reiterative, which is very different than the typical linear and sequential interpretation we are accustomed to reading, and as modern theologians teach. We also see that using John’s style that the Book of Revelation has a very different structure than is presented in the New Testament as contained in the Bibles of today. What if the timeline of the Book of Revelation is not linear and sequential, as it has traditionally been read from beginning to end? What if the structural divisions of Revelation we are so accustomed to are artificial, and not as John originally intended them to be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocalyptic texts are often seen as either frightening or irrelevant, a tool for fearmongering and manipulation or for the lucrative doomsday industry. But Apocalypse When?: Interpreting and Preaching Apocalyptic Texts equips readers to understand these texts as sources of encouragement and strength for the church. As the world faces threats of war, poverty, climate and environmental crises, and political upheaval, churches can draw on the wisdom and courage of our biblical ancestors who faced their own calamities and persecutions. Their struggles against powerful economic, militaristic, cultural, and social forces drew them closer to God. We have much to learn from their faith, ethical integrity, and dedication to the promises of God that engender hope in the midst of turmoil and terror. With solid historical exegesis, thought-provoking ideas for preaching, and examples of sermons that creatively and compellingly proclaim God's word, this book provides much-needed guidance for the church in tumultuous times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: The work that follows is not intended to be a commentary on the Apocalypse. There have been many such commentaries, reaching back into the earliest times of the Christian era. Some, especially during the Middle Ages, have been quite spectacular in their ingeniousness. Our modern era has seen a series of fine commentaries, applying all the criteria of a historical-philological analysis to this difficult book. . . . What I have attempted to do here is to provide a continuous reading of the text, trying to show, especially through the links which can be made with the Old Testament tradition, the coherent and unified argument of the whole work. . . . The reader will find that, despite my admiration for and debt to the older commentaries, I have introduced something quite new to the interpretation of the Apocalypse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an in-depth filmed conversation between Howard Burton and Jay Rubenstein, Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Premodern World at the University of South Carolina, which provides us with fascinating insights into medieval society. How did the First Crusade happen? What could have suddenly caused tens of thousands of knights, commoners and even nuns at the end of the 11th century to leave their normal lives behind and trek thousands of miles across hostile territory in an unprecedented vicious and bloody quest to wrest Jerusalem from its occupying powers? Jay Rubenstein, historian of the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual worlds of Europe in the Middle Ages at USC, carefully explores those questions based on his extensive research while discussing the Apocalypse: the crusaders’ sincere belief that the end of the world was approaching and their opportunity to participate in the last stage of the divine plan. This carefully-edited book includes an introduction, The Glorious End, and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter: I. Becoming a Medievalist - Suddenly fashionable II. Guibert of Nogent - From overlooked to oversimplified III. Armies of Heaven - Subheading IV. Considering Impact - On history and historians V. Moving On - Or perhaps not About Ideas Roadshow Conversations: This book is part of an expanding series of 100+ Ideas Roadshow conversations, each one presenting a wealth of candid insights from a leading expert through a focused yet informal setting to give non-specialists a uniquely accessible window into frontline research and scholarship that wouldn't otherwise be encountered through standard lectures and textbooks. Book Synopsis The Apocalypse--Letter by Letter by : Steven Paul
Download or read book The Apocalypse--Letter by Letter written by Steven Paul and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a dying man spends his last years writing a book, people often take notice. When the book claims to reveal the secrets of the Book of Revelation, even more interest is generated. The Apocalypse-Letter by Letter, by Steven Paul, has been described as "a masterpiece." In it, the author pens a series of letters to his brother-in-law to show how the Bible contains all the information a reader would need to decode the symbols, forms and sequence of events in the Apocalypse. Paul's literary genius is as fascinating as the subject is compelling. His unique knowledge of history, the Church, military strategy, literary forms, and wit and humor combine to take the reader on a tour of the Bible's most enigmatic book. After being diagnosed with cancer, the author sent a series of typewritten letters to his brother-in-law. Many of the letters included example passages handwritten in ancient Greek, to show how translators had often distorted the original meaning of the scripture. As Paul lay dying in a hospital bed, he gave instructions to his brother-in-law about how to assemble the information he had written into a book. Alas, he had only transmitted half of it when he passed away. Then handwritten notes were found near his manual typewriter and the brother-in-law spent the next many months entering the entire project into a computer along with the previously received letters.

Book Synopsis Reading Revelation by : Gordon W. Campbell
Download or read book Reading Revelation written by Gordon W. Campbell and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation can be read in various ways. Where interpretation opts not to venture beyond Revelation or approach the book as a forecast of end-time events, it typically favours either going behind the text, in search of a socio-historical context of origin to which it might refer, or else standing in front of the text and investigating the book’s reception history, or its present relevance and impact. Comparatively little interpretative work has been undertaken inside the text, exploring the mechanics of how Revelation ‘works’, still less how its complex parts might fit together into a meaningful whole. Gordon Campbell considers Revelation to be a coherent narrative composition that draws its hearer or reader into its text-world. In Reading Revelation: A Thematic Approach, Campbell gives an innovative account of Revelation’s sophisticated thematic content. Mindful of Revelation's narrative verve, or its architecture en mouvement (as Jacques Ellul once put it), Campbell plots a series of thematic trajectories through the book. On this reading, parody and parallelism fundamentally shape the whole narrative. As a first-ever integrated account of Revelation’s macro-themes, Reading Revelation makes an important contribution to Revelation scholarship. In its light, the book may justifiably be seen as the ‘crowning achievement’ of the Scriptures.
