Book Synopsis Empowering Student Researchers by : Bethanie Pletcher
Download or read book Empowering Student Researchers written by Bethanie Pletcher and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This yearbook is a project of the Consortium for Educational Development, Evaluation and Research (CEDER), the research and development arm of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. With this edition of the CEDER Yearbook, the editors wished to support student researchers as emerging scholars. Participating in research projects entails many benefits for students, including the onboarding of new teaching methods and strategies, becoming a reflective practitioner, engaging in a different model of professional learning, learning how to behave like a researcher, improving writing skills, and pursuing further degrees. Collaboration between faculty members and students (often teacher or pre-service teacher researchers) is critical (Brew, 2013; Johnson, 2000; Ries, 2018).Strickland (1988) posits that teacher researchers need to be engaged in every step of the research process and allowed to take ownership of the work. It should be thought of as helping to create lifelong researchers, for "if students are properly trained, prepared, and supervised, the student-faculty collaboration can be a memorable and successful experience. It may even inspire the career goal of a future professor or two" (Fenn, 2010, p. 259). The call for proposals asked for empirical, conceptual and theoretical contributions to the area of research conducted by students. Personal Perspectives and Research Focus of students include the following categories: Culture, International Students, Men of Color, Teaching, Doctoral Students, Latino/a Culture, STEM, LBGTQ, Policy and Administration, Student Faculty, and Curriculum. The intended audience for this yearbook includes educators, decision-makers, policymakers, and leaders within faculty and student development programs as well as international student departments. A call for proposals was issued to a variety of universities and professional organizations. Two hundred and sixty-four articles from a total of 217 authors representing 72 universities were submitted. Those blinded articles were distributed to a panel of reviewers. Each article was seen by two reviewers and the editors of the yearbook. The editorial team selected 21 articles for inclusion in this yearbook.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Writing by : Charles Bazerman
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Writing written by Charles Bazerman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Research on Writing ventures to sum up inquiry over the last few decades on what we know about writing and the many ways we know it: How do people write? How do they learn to write and develop as writers? Under what conditions and for what purposes do people write? What resources and technologies do we use to write? How did our current forms and practices of writing emerge within social history? What impacts has writing had on society and the individual? What does it mean to be and to learn to be an active participant in contemporary systems of meaning? This cornerstone volume advances the field by aggregating the broad-ranging, interdisciplinary, multidimensional strands of writing research and bringing them together into a common intellectual space. Endeavoring to synthesize what has been learned about writing in all nations in recent decades, it reflects a wide scope of international research activity, with attention to writing at all levels of schooling and in all life situations. Chapter authors, all eminent researchers, come from disciplines as diverse as anthropology, archeology, typography, communication studies, linguistics, journalism, sociology, rhetoric, composition, law, medicine, education, history, and literacy studies. The Handbook’s 37 chapters are organized in five sections: *The History of Writing; *Writing in Society; *Writing in Schooling; *Writing and the Individual; *Writing as Text This volume, in summing up what is known about writing, deepens our experience and appreciation of writing—in ways that will make teachers better at teaching writing and all of its readers better as individual writers. It will be interesting and useful to scholars and researchers of writing, to anyone who teaches writing in any context at any level, and to all those who are just curious about writing.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation by : Nadine Dolby
Download or read book Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation written by Nadine Dolby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation builds on the legacy of social justice multicultural education, while recognizing the considerable challenges of reaching today’s college students. By drawing on breakthrough research in two fields – neuroscience and animal studies – Nadine Dolby argues that empathy is an underlying element of all living beings. Dolby shows how this commonality can provide a scaffolding for building an exciting new approach to developing multicultural and global consciousness, one that has the potential to transform how our students see and relate to the world around them. This book features classroom vignettes and reflections, discussion of research with pre-service teachers on the concept of empathy, and pedagogical suggestions for fostering the new empathy in students. Incorporating discussions of animal emotions, sustainability, and our responsibilities to all living creatures and the planet, Dolby challenges multicultural educators to rethink both curriculum and pedagogy and to begin new and bolder conversations about how empathy for humans, animals, and the planet must be part of a new approach to teaching.
