Book excerpt: In this hardbound edition of Tom's 16th adventure in this series, he finds out that a newly classified exo-planet outside Pluto's orbit is about to have a close encounter with the return of Haley's Comet. The problem is that at such distances nobody can tell just how close. A visit to the Planet, Eris, is called for but he must first devise a ay to travel faster than he ever has before so the trip can be accomplished before the pass by. What he comes up with astounds even his father, and that takes a lot! Tom, Bud and their crew arrive in time to witness a catastrophic collision that begins the slow and inevitable break up of the planet. But, trouble is brewing as calculations show some of the debris will eventually drift in and possibly collide with Mars and the Earth. What to do? Nobody has ever tried to put an entire planet back together. This is a Humpty Dumpty exercise of planetary proportions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anything Goes is an unusual and a hilarious collection of short stories by the author Martin Dec Haynes F.R.C.S. who is also a poet, a surgeon, golfer, philatelist and humorist. Because of the author’s vast working experience lots of his stories have a medical theme, but you can rest assured that, coming from Haynes, they are not run-of-the-mill, nay rather they are extremely esoteric and virtually beyond belief. Near the end of the book the writing style takes a detour and a few yarns are narrated as if by idiot types who misspell words, or some of the words are written as they are pronounced, adding greatly to the farcical effect. The last story is about a young man who leaves his wife behind in The Islands, and goes to London to study medicine successfully; then he divorces his island-wife from a distance and takes a spanking new English wife. He is now about to return to his native island but his grandfather is waiting at the airport with a shotgun to blow out his brains. Fortunately, other family members are able to avert the disaster. All in all the collection is a riproaring read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical ventilation is an essential life-sustaining therapy for many critically-ill patients. As technology has evolved, clinicians have been presented with an increasing number of ventilator options as well as an ever-expanding and confusing list of terms, abbreviations, and acronyms. Unfortunately, this has made it extremely difficult for clinicians at all levels of training to truly understand mechanical ventilation and to optimally manage patients with respiratory failure. Mechanical Ventilation was written to address these problems. This handbook provides students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians with a clear explanation of essential physiology, terms and acronyms, and ventilator modes and breath types. It describes how mechanical ventilators work and explains clearly and concisely how to write ventilator orders, how to manage patients with many different causes of respiratory failure, how to "wean" patients from the ventilator, and much more. Mechanical Ventilation is meant to be carried and used at the bedside and to allow everyone who cares for critically-ill patients to master this essential therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1953 effort to end the authority of local Native American governments, Congress passed Public Law 83-280. Allowing states to apply their criminal and civil laws to Native American country, the law provided an unparalleled opportunity for the state of South Dakota to crush burgeoning Lakota nationalism. Edward Valandra's Not Without Our Consent documents the tenacious and formidable Lakota resistance to attempts at applying this law. In unprecedented depth, it follows their struggle through the 1950s when, against all odds, their resistance succeeded in the amendment of PL 83-280 to include Native consent as a prerequisite to state jurisdiction. The various House and Senate bills discussed in the manuscript are reproduced in five appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When appointed to the Supreme Court in 1970 by President Nixon, Harry A. Blackmun was seen as a quiet, safe choice to complement the increasingly conservative Court of his boyhood friend, Warren Burger. No one anticipated his seminal opinion championing abortion rights in Roe v. Wade, the most controversial ruling of his generation, which became the battle cry of both supporters and critics of judicial power and made Blackmun a liberal icon. Harry A. Blackmun: The Outsider Justice is Tinsley E. Yarbrough's penetrating account of one of the most outspoken and complicated figures on the Supreme Court. As a justice, Blackmun stood at the pinnacle of the American judiciary. Yet when he took his seat on the Court, Justice Blackmun felt "almost desperate," overwhelmed with feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy over the immense responsibilities before him. Blackmun had overcome humble roots to achieve a Harvard education, success as a Minneapolis lawyer and resident counsel to the prestigious Mayo Clinic, as well as a distinguished record on the Eighth Circuit federal appeals court. But growing up in a financially unstable home with a frequently unemployed father and an emotionally fragile mother left a permanent mark on the future justice. All his life, Harry Blackmun considered himself one of society's outsiders, someone who did not "belong." Remarkably, though, that very self-image instilled in the justice, throughout his career, a deep empathy for society's most vulnerable outsiders--women faced with unwanted pregnancies, homosexuals subjected to archaic laws, and ultimately, death-row inmates. To those who saw his career as the constitutional odyssey of a conservative jurist gradually transformed into a champion of the underdog, Blackmun had a ready answer: he had not changed; the Court and the issues before them changed. The justice's identification with the marginalized members of society arguably provides the overarching key to that consistency. Thoroughly researched, engagingly written, Harry A. Blackmun: The Outsider Justice offers an in-depth, revelatory portrait of one of the most intriguing jurists ever to sit on the Supreme Court. Relying on in-depth archival material, in addition to numerous interviews with Blackmun's former clerks, Yarbrough here presents the definitive biography of the great justice, ultimately providing an illuminating window into the inner-workings of the modern Supreme Court.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book, which builds on the author's earlier work in "On Gendering Texts," studies how, by what means and to what extent human love, desire and sex, and possibly even 'sexuality', are gendered in the Hebrew Bible. Following a classification and gendering of the linguistic and semantic data, the investigation looks into the construction of male and female bodies in language and ideologies; the praxis and ideology of sex, procreation and contraception; deviation from socio-sexual boundaries (e.g. incest, rape, adultery, homosexuality, prostitution); eroticism and "pornoprophetics." Finally, the work discusses some of the wider sociological and theological implications of the findings.
