Hormones, neurotransmitters, and immunological factors released from the gut are known to send signals to the brain either directly or via autonomic neurons. Recently, studies have emerged focusing on variations in the microbiome and the effect on various CNS disorders, including, but not limited to anxiety, depressive disorders, schizophrenia, and autism. Anxiety, Gut Microbiome, and Nutraceuticals: Recent Trends and Clinical Evidence is focused on understanding the role of gut microbiomes on anxiety and how it can be treated using various nutraceuticals. It covers recent trends and clinical evidence in application of nutraceuticals in treating anxiety and related disorders. Key Features Explains various factors related to anxiety and anxiety-related disorders including pathophysiological and pharmacological factors Discusses the pharmacology behind anxiety and related disorders Explores the role of gut microbiota and its relationship with anxiety and related disorders Describes different nutraceuticals and classes of nutraceuticals which can be useful to treat anxiety and related disorders In recent years, there has been an increased interest in nutraceuticals and their applications in treating many diseases and disorders. The market has grown tremendously, and this book focuses on the many clinical studies reporting on the usefulness of nutraceuticals in treating such health conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rather new and somewhat unusual concept connects brain functions to gut microbiota. It is called "gut-brain axis" (or "microbiota-gut-brain axis") and states that probiotics consumption and a healthy gut microbiota positively influence brain functions related to behavior and cognition. Synergistic with a low chronic grade peripheral inflammation, this faulty barrier exposes the aged brain to negative extra-cerebral signals. Given the quasi-constant failure of pharmacological treatments in neurodegenerative diseases, increased interest is directed toward allopathic medicine, including dietary supplements. Interplay between gut microbiota and central nervous system by immune, neural and metabolic pathways is being explored as a possible modulator of cognitive impairment and behavior disorders. In elderly persons, this axis has been reported to be altered, contributing to systemic inflammation and was also indicated as a possible marker for early frailty in younger population. Currently, there are several clinical trials addressing the relationship between gut microbiota and central nervous system psychiatric disorders and at least one directly investigating whether there is a correlation between composition of gut microbiome, permeability of intestinal barrier and systemic inflammation in patients with dementia. This chapter discusses evidence-based data on positive modulation of gut-brain axis to alleviate behavior and cognition alterations in the elderly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook is your guidebook to the ultimate superdiet, an evidence-based keto diet that emphasizes a diversity of fish, healthy fats, and a rainbow of colorful vegetables—with 100 delicious recipes for everything from snacks to dinner. The Mediterranean diet has long been touted as one of the world’s healthiest diets, renowned for its protective effects against heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses. However, its heavy inclusion of grains and carbohydrates can contribute to obesity and is a drawback for many. Also shown to have many health benefits, the ketogenic diet stimulates the fat-burning and longevity-promoting state of ketosis by limiting carbs and emphasizing high-fat foods. While the keto diet is about the proportion of macronutrients (fats, protein, carbohydrates) in the food you eat, the Mediterranean diet is about specific food types: seafood, olive oil, colorful vegetables, and other anti-inflammatory foods. This book is about living and eating at the intersection of these complementary diets so you can reap the benefits of both. While both diets advocate significant amounts of healthy fats and protein, the new Mediterranean approach to keto significantly shifts the fat profile of the diet to emphasize the monounsaturated and omega-3 fats that health experts agree promote living a long disease-free life. It also includes colorful vegetables, providing a diversity of nutrients and flavor. The result is an enhanced Mediterranean diet that stokes metabolism, supports the gut and microbiome, and is anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and nutrient-dense. Improve your overall health while enjoying delectable dishes including: Superfood Shakshuka Blender Cinnamon Pancakes with Cacao Cream Topping Green Goddess Salad Pancetta Wrapped Sea Bass Sheet Pan Crispy Salmon Piccata Fierce Meatball Zoodle Bolognese Nordic Stone Age Bread Chocolate Hazelnut “Powerhouse” Truffles With The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook, you’ll learn how to balance your macronutrients, what foods are considered the new Mediterranean superfoods, and how to make tasty dishes to keep you satisfied all day.

Book excerpt: 'This is a fascinating book, by a leading researcher, covering one of the most exciting areas of modern nutritional research - how what we eat impacts our gut and brain. The combination of personal stories and cutting edge science is a real winner.' Michael Mosley You feel how you eat. We accept that the quality of our diet affects the health of our heart and liver. So why wouldn't diet - good or bad - affect the health of our brain? This is the question that Australian scientist Felice Jacka set out to answer. Having suffered depression and anxiety as a young woman, she wanted to understand the role diet plays in our overall mental and brain health. What she found through her own research and that of other eminent scientists worldwide will revolutionise the way we think about what we eat and how we care for our brains. * Obesity and depression are two major causes of disease and disability across the globe, and each influences the other. *Food does affect mood: highly processed foods increase depression risk, while a balanced, whole-food diet can prevent depression and improve mood. *A healthy diet improves gut health, and in turn health microbiota (gut bacteria) promote brain health and keep our weight in check. *A healthy diet improves brain performance at all ages, from school-age kids to their work-stressed parents. *The Mediterranean diet is linked to lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and general cognitive decline in older people. Professor Jacka, who leads the field of Nutritional Psychiatry research globally, provides not just the most recent scientific evidence but also a range of simple, practical solutions for improving the way we eat on a daily basis, including meal plans and a range of delicious recipes. This is not a diet book. This is a guide to the good habits that will protect your most precious organ, improve your quality of life and optimise mental and brain health across your lifespan. PRAISE FOR BRAIN CHANGER 'Jacka is leading the way in providing evidence-based approaches that are rooted in cutting-edge science to transform how we think about mental health.' Professor John Cryan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genomics and related areas of research have contributed greatly to the understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying diet–disease relationships. In the past decade, the evidence has become stronger for a direct link between genome/epigenome damage and increased risk for adverse health outcomes. It is now exceedingly clear that micronutrients are critical as cofactors for many cellular functions, including DNA repair enzymes, methylation of CpG sequences, DNA oxidation, and/or uracil incorporation into DNA. Nutrigenomics and Nutraceuticals: Clinical Relevance and Disease Prevention brings new perspectives on disease prevention strategy based on the genomic knowledge and nutraceuticals of an individual and the diet he or she receives. This book discusses the integration and application of genetic and genomics technology into nutrition research and paves the way for the development of nutrition research programs that are aimed at the prevention and control of chronic disease through genomics-based nutritional interventions. In this book, the editors bring together a wide spectrum of nutritional scientists worldwide to contribute to the growing knowledge in the field of nutrigenomics and nutraceuticals.
