Book Synopsis The Politics of Form in Greek Literature by : Phiroze Vasunia
Download or read book The Politics of Form in Greek Literature written by Phiroze Vasunia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Form in Greek Literature explores the relationship between form and political life specifically in Greek textual culture. In the last generation or so, classicists (and their counterparts in other disciplines) have begun to pay greater attention to the socio-historical contexts of literary production and sought to historicize aesthetic practice. However, historicism (and in particular New Historicism) is only one mode of approaching the question of form, which is increasingly brought into dialogue with a number of other issues (e.g. gender). Bringing together contributions from a range of experts, this volume examines these and other related approaches, assessing their limitations and discussing possibilities for the future. Individual chapters discuss an array of ancient authors, including Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Aristotle, Callimachus, and more, and sketch out the specifically Greek contribution to the debate, as well as the implications for other disciplines. What emerges from this book are new ways of thinking about form, and indeed about politics, that will be of value to scholars and students across the humanities and social sciences.

Book Synopsis Material Inspirations by : Jonah Siegel
Download or read book Material Inspirations written by Jonah Siegel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the complex relationship between matter and idea that shaped the nineteenth-century culture of art, and that in turn determined the course of still-current accounts of art's nature and value. Fundamental questions about the effects of material conditions on the creation and reception of art arose as early as the nineteenth century, and put important pressures on later eras. The place of class distinctions in the making and reception of art, the relationship between copy and original, the effects of display on art appreciation, even the role of pleasure itself: this book treats these and related issues as productive conceptual challenges with an unresolved relationship to matter at their core. Drawing on recent scholarship on the history of art and its institutions, Material Inspirations places cultural developments such as the emergence of new sites for exhibition and the astonishing proliferation of printed reproductions alongside a wide range of texts including novels, poems, travel guidebooks, compendia of antiquities, and especially the great line of critical writing that emerged in the period. The study vivifies a dynamic era, which is still too often seen as static and unchanging, by emphasizing the transformations taking place throughout the period in precisely those areas that have appeared to promise little more than repetition or continuity: collection, exhibition, and reproduction. The book culminates with the two great critics of the period, John Ruskin and Walter Pater, but it also includes close analysis of other prose writers, as well as poets and novelists ranging from William Blake to Robert Browning, George Eliot to Henry James. Significant developments addressed include the vogue for the representation of Old Masters in the first half of the century, ongoing innovations in the creation and diffusion of reproductions, and the emergence of the field of art history itself. At the heart of each of these the book identifies a material pressure shaping concepts, texts, and works of art.

Book Synopsis Transformations in Late Eighteenth Century Art by : Robert Rosenblum
Download or read book Transformations in Late Eighteenth Century Art written by Robert Rosenblum and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1970-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosenblum's "Transformations in late Eighteenth century art" is still one of th best and most inspiring books on the art of neoclassicism and early romaticism. Encompassing both pictorial arts and architecture, it points central themes in the arts of that time. It offers clues to further investigations as to the seminal character of the fundamental changes in the art and architecture of the late 18th century. And it is wonderfully wide in perspective and clear in its argument. It presents a number of focus in a period where one gets easily lost in either superficial statements or far too detailed information.

Book Synopsis Drawing the Greek Vase by : Caspar Meyer
Download or read book Drawing the Greek Vase written by Caspar Meyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have two-dimensional images of ancient Greek vases shaped modern perceptions of these artefacts and of the classical past? This is the first scholarly volume devoted to the exploration of drawings, prints, and photographs of Greek vases in modernity. Case studies of the seventeenth to the twentieth century foreground ways that artists have depicted Greek vases in a range of styles and contexts within and beyond academia. Questions addressed include: how do these images translate three-dimensional ancient utilitarian objects with iconography central to the tradition of Western painting and decorative arts into two-dimensional graphic images carrying aesthetic and epistemic value? How does the embodied practice of drawing enable people to engage with Greek vases differently from museum viewers, and what insights does it offer on ancient producers and users? And how did the invention of photography impact the tradition of drawing Greek vases? The volume addresses art historians of the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, archaeologists and classical reception scholars.
