Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully updated paperback edition that includes coverage of the key developments of the past two years, including the political controversies that swirled around Facebook with increasing intensity in the Trump era. If you wanted to build a machine that would distribute propaganda to millions of people, distract them from important issues, energize hatred and bigotry, erode social trust, undermine respectable journalism, foster doubts about science, and engage in massive surveillance all at once, you would make something a lot like Facebook. Of course, none of that was part of the plan. In this fully updated paperback edition of Antisocial Media, including a new chapter on the increasing recognition of--and reaction against--Facebook's power in the last couple of years, Siva Vaidhyanathan explains how Facebook devolved from an innocent social site hacked together by Harvard students into a force that, while it may make personal life just a little more pleasurable, makes democracy a lot more challenging. It's an account of the hubris of good intentions, a missionary spirit, and an ideology that sees computer code as the universal solvent for all human problems. And it's an indictment of how "social media" has fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world, from facilitating Russian meddling in support of Trump's election to the exploitation of the platform by murderous authoritarians in Burma and the Philippines. Both authoritative and trenchant, Antisocial Media shows how Facebook's mission went so wrong.

Book excerpt: What if your greatest secrets became public? For the students at Alexandria Prep, a series of hacks leads to a scandalous firestorm—and the students are left wondering whose private photos and messages will be exposed next. It’s Pretty Little Liars meets WikiLeaks. ONE HACK. EVERY SECRET. EXPOSED. Alexandria Prep is in total social chaos. Someone—no one knows who—has hacked into the phones of the school’s social royalty and leaked their personal messages and photos. At first it was funny—everyone loved watching the dirty private lives of those they envied become public. But when things escalate, the students realize anyone could be a target. When Anna returns to school for senior spring, she’s initially grateful that all eyes are on everyone else’s problems...and not on her humiliating breakup with her basketball-star boyfriend. But as the hacks begin to shatter lives and threaten futures, Anna races to protect those she loves—as well as her own devastating secrets. If only the students of Alexandria Prep could turn back the clock so they knew then what they know now: sometimes we share too much. ★ "This debut novel is timely, cautionary, and compelling." —VOYA, starred review "In an age of adult anxieties over digital privacy, this book is #relevant." —Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis The Anti-Social Family by : Mary McIntosh
Download or read book The Anti-Social Family written by Mary McIntosh and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite much talk of its decline, the nuclear family persists as a structure central to contemporary society, a fact to be lamented, according to the ideas of Michle Barrett and Mary McIntosh. The Anti-social Family dissects the network of household, kinship and sexual relations that constitute the family form in advanced capitalist societies to show how they reinforce conditions of inequality. This classic work explores the personal and social needs that the family promises to meet but more often denies, and proposes moral and political practices for more egalitarian caring alternatives.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm W. Klein Center for Research on Crime and Social Control University of Southern California 1. BACKGROUND In June of 1988, approximately forty scholars and researchers met for four days in the Leeuwenborst Congres Center in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, to participate in a workshop entitled Self-Report Metho dology in Criminological Research. The participants represented 15 nations and 30 universities and research centers, a diversity that was matched by the experiences and focal interests in self-report methods among the participants. This volume is the result of the workshop process and in particular of the invitations to participants to prepare pre-conference papers for distribution prior to the workshop. The chapters in the volume were selected from the larger set of pre conference papers. As workshop conv~ner and volume editor, it falls on me to set some of the context for this enterprise. Self-report crime is "admitted" crime, derived from interview and questionnaire responses obtained from adults and juveniles (regardless of whether or not they have been arrested) concerning their own illegal behaviors. Growing awareness of the limitations of official crime statistics has led to the development of self-report procedures.

Book excerpt: Patients with antisocial personality disorder (APD) have traditionally been considered difficult ot treat, or even untreatable, with psychotherapy. Recent clinical and research developments, however, have begun to change this view. In this book. both experienced and novice clinicians will gain an understanding of the developments in this area of psychotherapy. Rotgers and Maniacci present experts in the field of various models of treatment, among them Adlerian, biosocial-learning, motivational interviewing, Rogerian and psychopharmacological, to identify treatment goals, select assessment tools, conceptualize progression, pinpoint pitfalls, develop techniques, and move toward a successful therapeutic completion. By providing a brief overview of APD, discussing the ongoing controversies regarding the construct of APD, and assessing the responses to the same set of questions posed to each expert, the authors offers a glimpse into the difficult world of antisocial personality disorder.

Book Synopsis The Sex Offender Register by : Terry Thomas
Download or read book The Sex Offender Register written by Terry Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sex Offender Register examines the origins, history, structure and legalities of the UK sex offender register, and explores how political and public opinion has influenced the direction the policy of registration has taken. Delving into the origins of the UK sex offender register and how the registration policy has evolved, this book provides an understanding of the register and its contribution to public protection while attempting to see the register as a policy that has grown and developed and as having an organic life of its own. The sex offender register is designed as a form of public protection rather than a punishment, requiring offenders to notify the police of their circumstances and to accept a degree of offender management from the police. The book: • puts the development of the register in its political, social and ethical context • considers the position of children and young people as offenders • outlines the movement of registered offenders across international borders • analyses how offenders can be removed from the register • explores how other countries in the UK manage sex offenders through registers • asks questions about the efficacy of the register and what contribution it makes to public protection • looks at specific aspects of registration including the management of information • delves into the experience of life on the register • examines the influence of public opinion • discusses the role of the police as custodians of the register and as offender managers. Exploring the different pressures brought to bear on the register, this book provides an authoritative starting point for police officers, social workers, probation officers, magistrates, students of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Policing, and the general reader wanting to understand where the UK sex offender register originated from and how it operates today.
