Book excerpt: Cap Anson's plaque at the Baseball Hall of Fame sums up his career with admirable simplicity: "The greatest hitter and greatest National League player-manager of the 19th century." Anson helped make baseball the national pastime. He hit over .300 in all but three of his major league seasons, and upon his retirement in 1897, he held the all-time records for games played, times at bat, hits, runs scored, doubles and runs batted in. For much of his career, he also served as manager of the National League's Chicago White Stockings (now known as the Cubs), winning five pennants and finishing in the top half of the league in 15 of his 19 seasons. Anson's career coincided with baseball's rise to prominence. As the sport's first superstar, he was one of the best known and most widely admired men in the United States. He took advantage of his fame, starring in a Broadway play and touring on the vaudeville circuit. He toured England, Europe, Egypt, and Australia, introducing baseball throughout the world. Regrettably, he also vehemently opposed the presence of African Americans in the game and played a significant role in its segregation in the 1880s. From Marshalltown, Iowa, to superstar status, this work traces the life and times of Anson and the growth of the national pastime.

Book excerpt: The true life story of Canadian Arctic bush pilot Don C. Braun is must reading for aviation fans everywhere. His fireside narrative plus 32 pages of photos capture the spirit and adventures of the first man to land a wheeled aircraft at the North Pole. Born on a farm near St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1913, Don built and flew a glider as a teenager and then operated an aircraft repair shop at Harlem Airport in Chicago in the 1930's. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and flew the North West Staging Route from Edmonton to Alaska. His first bush flying was in an RCAF Norseman during the war years, and he went on to become one of the best known and most respected Canadian Arctic bush pilots of his time. He joined with Max Ward in getting Wardair off the ground as a small charter operation out of Yellowknife in the 1950's. While Max grew Wardair into one of the world's premier charter airlines, Don preferred the cockpit and the North. His stories of close calls and life in the North always spoke his mind, and this handsome book does no less. The Artic Fox, as he was known in the North, was superbly resourceful, bailing himself out of tight situations almost daily in his days of High Arctic flying. A great pilot and an even better mechanic, Don shares details aviation fans will know and love. This is your book, pilots and all others who love flying.

Adrian Randall shows how conflicts and tensions in 'high' politics contributed to a potent national sense of freedom and right, giving ordinary people the confidence to respond vigorously to any threat to their customary liberties. He demonstrates how the rulers of eighteenth-century England were forced to manage disorder through a mixture of judicious theatre and periodic repression, and how economic and social transformation led to fundamental changes in the nature of popular protest.

Book excerpt: Ace McCool is an over-the-top spoof of the airline industry. It relates the hilarious misadventures of a fly-by-night, corner-cutting airline called Down East International, based in Moncton, New Brunswick. The stories start with Ace McCool, a World War II pilot, and the rag-tag characters he picks up along the way as his airline progresses from DC-3s to a Boeing 727 over the years from just after the war to 1985. Dim-witted pilot Pete Braddock "who could have flown the crate the airplane came in." The Smarts, an insufferable Englishman but "a polemaster of the first water." Churchy Laflamme, "de bes' co-pilot of dem all." Cowboy McCloskey, a big Albertan dinosaur with oil wells on his ranch. He commutes to Moncton in a privately-owned CF-104. Red Starr, a hippie pilot and, on the side, lead of a rock group called Red Starr and the Commies. Those pilots and a few more, as well as stewardesses (as they were called) Mile-High Millie, Crazy Iris and Stew Jane, and a few other characters stumble their way from one impossible situation to another. These are the same stories that brought laughter to readers of Canadian Aviation magazine. They are assembled together in book form. Come fly and laugh with Ace McCool of Down East International.
