Download or read book Forged written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bart D. Ehrman, the New York Times bestselling author of Jesus, Interrupted and God’s Problem reveals which books in the Bible’s New Testament were not passed down by Jesus’s disciples, but were instead forged by other hands—and why this centuries-hidden scandal is far more significant than many scholars are willing to admit. A controversial work of historical reporting in the tradition of Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, and John Dominic Crossan, Ehrman’s Forged delivers a stunning explication of one of the most substantial—yet least discussed—problems confronting the world of biblical scholarship.

Book excerpt: This book is a very useful text for anyone studying comparative education systems as well as those who seek to understand more fully the complexities and frustrations that lie beneath the underuse of the leadership skills and talents of women in schools, colleges and higher education in a number of European contexts: England and Wales, France, The Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway and Spain' - "School Leadership & Management " There are few books of which one can say 'all secondary teachers and governors should read this book' but this is one of them. I would recommend it to primary colleagues too....Its messages about school effectiveness can uniquely be applied to school improvement because there is data about how the same children fared under different regimes in different subject areas in the same school' - "School Leadership & Management " This major new school effectiveness study is a thought-provoking investigation of the concept of secondary school effectiveness. Based on a three-year study of secondary schools GCSE performance, the authors point to the importance of looking at: trends over time; effectiveness for different groups of students; and subject differences. They highlight the importance of moving beyond league table approaches and the need to focus on individual departments using value-added approaches. Forging Links illustrates the complexities of judging school performance. The findings make a significant contribution to our understanding of the factors and processes which help some schools and departments to enhance student progres

Book Synopsis Elvis After Elvis by : Gilbert B. Rodman
Download or read book Elvis After Elvis written by Gilbert B. Rodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'For a dead man, Elvis Presley is awfully noisy. His body may have failed him in 1977, but today his spirit, his image, and his myths do more than live on: they flourish, they thrive, they multiply.' Why is Elvis Presley so ubiquitous a presence in US culture? Why does he continue to enjoy a cultural prominence that would be the envy of the most heavily publicized living celebrities? In Elvis after Elvis Gil Rodman traces the myriad manifestations of The King in popular and not-so-popular culture. He asks why Elvis continues to defy our expectations of how dead stars are supposed to behave: Elvis not only refuses to go away, he keeps showing up in places where he seemingly doesn't belong. Rodman draws upon an extensive and eclectic body of Elvis 'sightings', from Elvis's appearances at the heart of the 1992 Presidential campaign to the debate over his worthiness as a subject for a postage stamp, and from Elvis's central role in furious debates about racism and the appropriation of African-American music to the world of Elvis impersonators and the importance of Graceland as a place of pilgrimage for Elvis fans and followers. Rodman shows how Elvis has become inseparable from many of the defining myths of US culture, enmeshed with the American dream and the very idea of the 'United States', caught up in debates about race, gender and sexuality and in the wars over what constitutes a national culture.

Book Synopsis Psychoanalytic Mythologies by : Ian Parker
Download or read book Psychoanalytic Mythologies written by Ian Parker and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Psychoanalytic Mythologies’ presents a collection of essays on the theme of what it is to be a human subject in a culture permeated by psychoanalytic imagery. The author disturbs the strongly-held belief of those in thrall to psychoanalysis that it is universally true, and this thesis forms the recurrent motif that binds these essays together. Instead he argues that psychoanalysis functions as something that is only ever locally true. These arguments are elaborated upon in a range of contexts, from night clubs, garages and trains to theme parks, magic circles and yoga, and the different strands are distilled into a cohesive thesis in the definitive final essay ‘Psychoanalytic Myth Today’. The essays presented here were initially published in scattered newsletters and journals, and were written intermittently in a period stretching back over ten years. Ian Parker has written widely in this area, and these lively and innovative essays taken together form a searing manifesto against the accepted dogmas of psychoanalysis.
Book Synopsis Health, Sickness, Medicine and the Friars in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries by : Angela Montford
Download or read book Health, Sickness, Medicine and the Friars in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries written by Angela Montford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health, Sickness, Medicine and the Friars in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries explores the attitudes and responses of the mendicant orders to illness, their contribution to medical history, the influence of health and sickness as a factor in the orders' decision making, the extent of their participation in treatments, their relationship with physicians or their own involvement in medical practice, and the problems which occurred as a result of these matters. Apart from brief details of the last illness noted in some convent obituaries, the sick friar is usually conspicuous by his absence from the records. This book addresses this absence. By focusing on these neglected aspects of the mendicant orders it is possible to begin to reconstruct their attitudes and practices towards sickness, health and medical treatment. In so doing, a picture begins to emerge which provides a much fuller understanding of both mendicant and wider medical history. Through such an approach, the book demonstrates how preserving health as well as treating illness were matters of interrelated and vital concern to the friars, a concern that coincided with a rising interest in health matters in wider society during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Book Synopsis The Devil's Book of Culture by : Benjamin Feinberg
Download or read book The Devil's Book of Culture written by Benjamin Feinberg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, Mexico, has drawn a strange assortment of visitors and pilgrims—schoolteachers and government workers, North American and European spelunkers exploring the region’s vast cave system, and counterculturalists from hippies (John Lennon and other celebrities supposedly among them) to New Age seekers, all chasing a firsthand experience of transcendence and otherness through the ingestion of psychedelic mushrooms “in context” with a Mazatec shaman. Over time, this steady incursion of the outside world has significantly influenced the Mazatec sense of identity, giving rise to an ongoing discourse about what it means to be “us” and “them.” In this highly original ethnography, Benjamin Feinberg investigates how different understandings of Mazatec identity and culture emerge through talk that circulates within and among various groups, including Mazatec-speaking businessmen, curers, peasants, intellectuals, anthropologists, bureaucrats, cavers, and mushroom-seeking tourists. Specifically, he traces how these groups express their sense of culture and identity through narratives about three nearby yet strange discursive “worlds”—the “magic world” of psychedelic mushrooms and shamanic practices, the underground world of caves and its associated folklore of supernatural beings and magical wealth, and the world of the past or the past/present relationship. Feinberg’s research refutes the notion of a static Mazatec identity now changed by contact with the outside world, showing instead that identity forms at the intersection of multiple transnational discourses.
