Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anodic polarization of iron-aluminum alloys has been investigated by the potentiostatic technique in hydrogen saturated sulfuric acid solutions. All alloys containing up to 20 w/o aluminum exhibited active, passive and transpassive characteristics. An improvement in corrosion resistance was seen for alloys with aluminum content of more than 16 w/o which may be attributed to the ordered phase Fe3A1. Micrographs of the surface of anodically polarized alloy were examined at selected potentials, and the surface topography showed a significant difference in accordance with the reaction mechanism in each step of anodic polarization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this book are to give technical information about anodic pro tection, explain how economic analyses are made to determine whether or not it should be used, and describe some of the applications and equipment. Lim itations of the technique will be pointed out. Technological changes that have resulted in higher temperatures, pres sures, and velocities increase corrosion rates and markedly influence materials selection and design decisions. Continuous cycle systems impose increased demands on system reliability. New processes require more sophisticated equipment made of costlier metals which are often in short supply and subject to the vagaries of international commerce. The impact of continuing inflation influences decisions related to capital expenditures and maintenance costs. Some problems caused by these considerations can be solved, or solutions simplified, by the use of anodic protection. Technical and scientific information is presented on applications to industrial equipment, economics, design and installation, operation and maintenance, electrochemical principles, laboratory tests and procedures. A historical summary, patent list, glossary of terms, and a subject index are included. It is important to acknowledge that much of the information has been from the original work of others, including the publications of many friends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuable information on corrosion fundamentals and applications of aluminum and magnesium Aluminum and magnesium alloys are receiving increased attention due to their light weight, abundance, and resistance to corrosion. In particular, when used in automobile manufacturing, these alloys promise reduced car weights, lower fuel consumption, and resulting environmental benefits. Meeting the need for a single source on this subject, Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum and Magnesium Alloys gives scientists, engineers, and students a one-stop reference for understanding both the corrosion fundamentals and applications relevant to these important light metals. Written by a world leader in the field, the text considers corrosion phenomena for the two metals in a systematic and parallel fashion. The coverage includes: The essentials of corrosion for aqueous, high temperature corrosion, and active-passive behavior of aluminum and magnesium alloys The performance and corrosion forms of aluminum alloys The performance and corrosion forms of magnesium alloys Corrosion prevention methods such as coatings for aluminum and magnesium Electrochemical methods of corrosion investigation and their application to aluminum and magnesium alloys Offering case studies and detailed references, Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum and Magnesium Alloys provides an essential, up-to-date resource for graduate-level study, as well as a working reference for professionals using aluminum, magnesium, and their alloys.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.
