Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association, 1894 The American Historical Association held its ninth annual meeting July 11-13, 1893, in the city of Chicago, with morning and evening sessions at the Art Institute. This meeting was held in conjunction with the World's Historical Congress. The Chicago committee representing this congress, or the historical section of the department of literature, are members of the American Historical Association and cooperated efficiently with its officers and its committee on programme. Dr. William F. Poole, of the Newberry Library, was the chairman of the Chicago committee, and to his personal efforts is largely due the success of the Chicago meeting. A brief report of the exercises was prepared by him and was published in The Independent July 20, 1893. On Monday evening, July 10, members of the Historical Association and others visiting Chicago for the purpose of attending the various congresses, were given a social reception at the Art Institute. On the following morning the historical congress was called to order by Dr. Poole, who nominated Dr. James B. Angell as temporary president and Dr. Herbert B. Adams as temporary secretary. Hon. William Wirt Henry afterwards moved that the two be made the officers of the congress during its session in Chicago. The programme for the ninth annual meeting of the American Historical Association was practically identical with that of the World's Historical Congress, and comprised 33 papers, 23 of which were read. Others were contributed to the proceedings and were read by title. President Angell in his inaugural address spoke of "The inadequate recognition of diplomatists by historians." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association, 1899 The New Haven meeting of this national historical society was the most successful in its history. During the three days convention, December 28-30, the morning and evening sessions were attended by large and enthusiastic audiences. An attractive series of interesting historical papers and reports was provided by the programme committee, of which Prof. E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, was the chairman. The local committee of arrangements did all that was possible for the entertainment and pleasure of the visiting members of the American Historical and American Economic associations. As occasionally in former years, so now these two kindred societies met at the same time, in the same city. The opening meeting of the Economic Association was held Tuesday evening, December 27, in the beautiful and spacious hall of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. After a cordial welcome from President Dwight, on behalf of the society, the city, and the university, and after the inaugural address by Prof. Arthur T. Hadley, the visiting members of both associations were pleasantly received by Professor and Mrs. Henry W. Farnam at their house on Hillhouse avenue. After Professor Fishers inaugural address Wednesday evening, at the opening of the Historical convention in Colonial Hall, both associations were received by the Historical Society in their lower rooms, which are nobly furnished with historical memorials of New Haven Colony and with portraits of its famous men. Not even Pilgrim Hall in old Plymouth could afford a richer or more suggestive environment for historical meetings, social and literary, than does the Colonial Hall in New Haven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association, Vol. 2: For the Year 1900 Wherever, in the course of its work, either commission has come upon material falling within the province of the other, information to that effect has at once been transmitted, and the two bodies have accordingly been able to work in entire harmony and without danger of trespassing upon each other's domain. The vote of the association establishing the commission authorized the appointment of representatives of the commission in the different States. With the vast mass of material to be dealt with, and divided, as it is, among fortyfive States, three Territories, and the District of Columbia, it early became evident that only by availing itself of the services of such State representatives could the commission hope to accomplish any considerable part of the work devolved upon it, and that the time of the members of the commission was likely to be fully engrossed with the general organization and direction of the work, without itself undertaking the actual investigation of records. The commission accordingly began at once the selection of adjunct members in the different States. The labor of selection proved to be very considerable and entailed a large amount of correspondence and personal inquiry. The following persons have thus far accepted appointments as adjunct members in their respective States: Alabama. - Mr. Thomas M. Owen, chairman of the Alabama History Commission, Birmingham. Connecticut. - Mr. Albert C. Bates, secretary of the Connecticut Historical Society and member of the Commission of Public Records, Hartford. Illinois. - Prof. F. W. Shepardson, University of Chicago, Chicago. Indiana. - Prof. James A. Woodburn, Indiana University, Bloomington. Iowa. - Prof. Benjamin F. Shambaugh, University of Iowa, Iowa City. Kansas. - Prof. Frank H. Hodder, University of Kansas, Lawrence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
