Book Synopsis Non-discrimination and Equality in India by : Vidhu Verma
Download or read book Non-discrimination and Equality in India written by Vidhu Verma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Justice is a concept familiar to most Indians but one whose meaning is not always understood as it signifies a variety of government strategies designed to enhance opportunities for underprivileged groups. By tracing the trajectory of social justice from the colonial period to the present, this book examines how it informs ideas, practices and debates on discrimination and disadvantage today. After outlining the historical context for reservations for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes that began under British colonial rule, the book examines the legal and moral strands of demands raised by newer groups since 1990. In addition the book shows how the development of quota policies has been significantly influenced by the nature and operation of democracy in India. It describes the recent proliferation of quota demands for reservations in higher education, private sector and for women and religious minorities in legislative assemblies. The book goes on to argue that while proliferation of demands address unequal incidence of poverty, deprivation and inequalities across social groups and communities, care has to be taken to ensure that existing justifications for quotas for discriminated groups due to caste hierarchies are not undermined. Providing a rich historical background to the subject, the book is a useful contribution to the study on the evolution of multiple conceptions of social justice in contemporary India.
Book Synopsis Pittsburgh and the Urban League Movement by : Joe William TrotterJr.
Download or read book Pittsburgh and the Urban League Movement written by Joe William TrotterJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great Migration, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became a mecca for African Americans seeking better job opportunities, wages, and living conditions. The city's thriving economy and vibrant social and cultural scenes inspired dreams of prosperity and a new start, but this urban haven was not free of discrimination and despair. In the face of injustice, activists formed the Urban League of Pittsburgh (ULP) in 1918 to combat prejudice and support the city's growing African American population. In this broad-ranging history, Joe William Trotter Jr. uses this noteworthy branch of the National Urban League to provide new insights into an organization that has often faced criticism for its social programs' deep class and gender limitations. Surveying issues including housing, healthcare, and occupational mobility, Trotter underscores how the ULP—often in concert with the Urban League's national headquarters—bridged social divisions to improve the lives of black citizens of every class. He also sheds new light on the branch's nonviolent direct-action campaigns and places these powerful grassroots operations within the context of the modern Black Freedom Movement. The impact of the National Urban League is a hotly debated topic in African American social and political history. Trotter's study provides valuable new insights that demonstrate how the organization has relieved massive suffering and racial inequality in US cities for more than a century.

Book Synopsis Policing Undocumented Migrants by : Louise Boon-Kuo
Download or read book Policing Undocumented Migrants written by Louise Boon-Kuo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration policing experiments such as boat turn-backs and offshore refugee processing have been criticised as unlawful and have been characterised as exceptional. Policing Undocumented Migrants explores the extraordinarily routine, powerful, and above all lawful practices engaged in policing status within state territory. This book reveals how the everyday violence of migration law is activated by making people ‘illegal’. It explains how undocumented migrants are marginalised through the broad discretion underpinning existing frameworks of legal responsibility for migration policing. Drawing on interviews with people with lived experience of undocumented status within Australia, perspectives from advocates, detailed analysis of legislation, case law and policy, this book provides an in-depth account of the experiences and legal regulation of undocumented migrants within Australia. Case studies of street policing, immigration raids, transitions in legal status such as release from immigration detention, and character based visa determination challenge conventional binaries in migration analysis between the citizen and non-citizen and between lawful and unlawful status. By showing the organised and central role of discretionary legal authority in policing status, this book proposes a new perspective through which responsibility for migration legal practices can be better understood and evaluated. Policing Undocumented Migrants will be of interest to scholars and practitioners working in the areas of criminology, criminal law, immigration law and border studies.
Book Synopsis Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010 by : Paul Kua
Download or read book Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010 written by Paul Kua and published by Scout Association of HK. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010 covers the "what, how, when, who, why and so what" of the Hong Kong Scout Movement from 1910 to 2010, using a large volume of primary sources. It deals with the development of the youth movement both as a subject of enquiry and as an analytical tool which may shed light upon the broader history of Hong Kong. The author combines professed aim of Scouting (citizenship), the key motives for supporting it (governance, war, secular education and religious conversion) and the most relevant differentiating identities (race, class, gender and age) to analyze the experience of young people involved in Hong Kong Scouting throughout the years, both colonial and post-colonial. The book is richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images and relied heavily on a doctoral dissertation by the author, though they are also significantly different in both structure and content. It is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, decolonization, China and Hong Kong. By reconstructing the evolution of Scouting from a niche movement for a handful of British boys before the First World War to a fully indigenized and co-educational mass movement in the post-colonial Hong Kong society, it fills a gap in the historical studies of youth movements around the world. By analyzing how the movement and the (re)construction of its particular brand of citizenship training reflected the development of the community, it adds to our understanding of the political, cultural and social history of Hong Kong, often influenced by that of China. By demonstrating the uniqueness of its evolution in the colonial context, it provides useful comparative insights into the history of imperialism and colonial youth movements. By exploring the choices made by local Scouting since Hong Kong's retrocession of sovereignty to China, it compliments other studies on decolonization and post-colonial citizenship.

Book Synopsis The Protection of Employee Entitlements in Insolvency by : Helen Anderson
Download or read book The Protection of Employee Entitlements in Insolvency written by Helen Anderson and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Protection of Employee Entitlements in Insolvency: An Australian Perspective is the first detailed analysis of the law and policy dealing with employee entitlements such as wages, leave and redundancy payments that are threatened when companies fail. Although Australia has a government-funded safety-net scheme, currently known as the Fair Entitlements Guarantee, it doesn’t cover all lost entitlements for all workers. Some argue that the scheme removes any incentive for companies to make adequate provision for their employees’ entitlements, increasing the burden on the taxpayer. As well as investigating ways to safeguard the entitlements of employees that are presently lost through the improper behaviour of directors, The Protection of Employee Entitlements in Insolvency covers the history of Australia’s present system and comprehensively sets out the avenues available to assist employees to recover their entitlements. It also canvases what might be done in the future to improve the protection of employee entitlements in Australia when companies become insolvent.

Book Synopsis Malaysian water sector reform by : Ching Thoo Kim
Download or read book Malaysian water sector reform written by Ching Thoo Kim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water sector reform in Malaysia, initiated in 2004, intended to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the water sector in the long term. This book explains the overall policy process of the reform and assesses the extent to which the reform has met its objectives and the means through which it has done so. The conclusions point to a weak correlation between the reform outputs on the one hand and the operational efficiency and environmental effectiveness gains of water utilities on the other. They also offer valuable insights into the policy arrangement that successfully shaped the water reform process. The policy process of the Malaysian water sector reform reflects the current global trend towards centralizing water management within the public domain with a clear division of tasks between policy formulation, regulatory oversight and service provision. Federal and state actors have become the dominant players in the water sector. This has reduced the role of private water utilities to a small fraction of activities within the entire value chain of water, and strengthens close regulation oversight from the regulator. Lastly, civil society groups now have a growing (albeit still small) influence on the water sector. In terms of policy recommendations, this book reiterates the need to adopt a private sector culture in managing public water; to establish a clear division of tasks between policy formulation, regulation and service provision; and to facilitate wider public engagement as well as to promote better informational governance in the water sector, including the call for a national water data bank.

Book Synopsis The Nature of Inquisitorial Processes in Administrative Regimes by : Laverne Jacobs
Download or read book The Nature of Inquisitorial Processes in Administrative Regimes written by Laverne Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ’Inquisitorial processes’ refers to the inquiry powers of administrative governance and this book examines the use of these powers in administrative law across seven jurisdictions. The book brings together recent developments in mixed inquisitorial-adversarial administrative decision-making on a hitherto neglected area of comparative administrative process and institutional design. Reaching important conclusions about their own jurisdictions and raising questions which may be explored in others, the book's chapters are comparative. They explore the terminology and scope of the concept of inquisitorial process, justifications for the use of inquiry powers, the effectiveness of inquisitorial processes and the implications of the adoption of such powers. The book will set in motion continued dialogue about the inherent challenges of balancing policy goals, fairness, resources and institutional design within administrative law decision-making by offering theoretical, practical and empirical analyses. This will be a valuable book to government policy-makers, administrative law decision-makers, lawyers and academics.
