Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of the 2019 Yakutat Management Area (YMA) commercial set gillnet fisheries and stock status. The total commercial harvest of all species was 189,049 fish with an estimated preliminary exvessel value of $1,348,922, a 33% decrease from the 10-year average value of $2 million. The harvest included 316 Chinook, 54,810 sockeye, 100,480 coho, 33,048 pink, and 395 chum salmon. The Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet commercial fishery produced 73% of the total exvessel value. The total number of individual permits fished during the season was 95 permits, below the 10-year average of 115 permits. The total sockeye salmon harvest was well below the 10-year average of 111,100 fish, with the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet fishery accounting for the highest harvest. The coho salmon harvest was also below average and the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet produced 71% of the areawide coho salmon harvest. Pink salmon returns throughout YMA were average in 2019, but the overall harvest was below average. Chum salmon harvest was also below average. With recent years of poor production and low Chinook salmon returns to the Situk River, the subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries were closed to Chinook salmon retention for the ninth year in a row. The 2019 Situk River weir count of 623 large Chinook salmon was within the biological escapement goal (BEG) range of 450-1,050. Chinook salmon escapement goals were achieved on the Alsek and Klukshu rivers. The Situk River weir count of 72,541 sockeye salmon was above the BEG range of 30,000-70,000 fish. The Alsek and Klukshu rivers also exceeded their escapement goals for sockeye salmon.

The harvest by purse seine gear of 24.7 million fish included traditional fisheries (21.5 million), hatchery terminal areas (2.2 million), and Annette Island (1.0 million). Common property purse seine harvests of 23.7 million salmon were below the most recent average harvest of 38.6 million and ranked as the 33rd largest since statehood. The drift gillnet gear harvest of 4.2 million fish included traditional areas (2.6 million), hatchery terminal harvest areas (1.2 million), and Annette Island (0.4 million). Common property drift gillnet harvests of 3.8 million salmon were below the recent average harvest of 4.9 million and ranked as the 27th largest since statehood. Initial estimates for exvessel value are $55.6 million for common property purse seine fisheries and $18.8 million for common property drift gillnet fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This management plan provides an overview of the expected salmon runs, spawning escapement goals, harvest projections, and management measures to be used during the 2020 Yakutat commercial set gillnet fisheries. The Yakutat set gillnet fishing season and fishing periods will open by regulation as described in 5 AAC 30.310 and 5 AAC 30.320, or by emergency order. The Alsek River will open June 7, Dangerous River and Yakutat Bay will open June 14, Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet, and Manby Shore Outside Waters will open June 21. All Yakutat District fisheries will be opened by Sunday, June 28, except for the East Alsek, Akwe, and Italio rivers which will open by emergency order when desired sockeye salmon escapement levels can be documented. The Yakataga District coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) fisheries will also open by emergency order. Set gillnet fisheries are managed by adjusting fishing times and areas in response to inseason assessments of run strength. Management strategies will focus on sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in June and July. Following the first Sunday in August, fall fishing periods will go into effect and the management emphasis will transition to coho salmon. No formal preseason forecasting exists for the Yakutat salmon runs except Situk River Chinook salmon. Canada provides numerical forecasts for Alsek River sockeye and Chinook salmon. The 2020 Situk River Chinook salmon preseason forecast is for a total run size of 850 large fish. Continued poor productivity of these stocks warrants conservative fishery management in 2020. Returns are expected to be below average to above average for sockeye and coho salmon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This management plan provides an overview of the expected salmon runs, spawning escapement goals, harvest projections, and management measures for the 2022 Yakutat commercial set gillnet fisheries. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game develops formal preseason forecasts for only the Situk River Chinook salmon run and is forecasting a total run of 1,600 large (3-ocean age and older) fish. Canada develops preseason forecasts for Klukshu River sockeye and Chinook salmon runs and is forecasting a total run of 1,000 Chinook salmon and 11,300 sockeye salmon. Other Yakutat area sockeye and coho salmon runs are expected to be average to above average based on parent year harvests and escapements. The Yakutat set gillnet fishery will open by regulation as described in 5 AAC 30.310 and 5 AAC 30.320, or by emergency order. Set gillnet fisheries are managed by adjusting fishing time and area in response to inseason assessments of run strength. Management emphasis will focus on sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in June and July, and transition to coho salmon beginning the first Sunday in August. Continued poor productivity of Chinook salmon and sockeye salmon stocks warrants conservative fishery management during June and July.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a summary of the 2019 season and historical data concerning management of the commercial salmon fisheries of the Northwestern and Northern districts of the North Alaska Peninsula in the Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M). Most commercial salmon fishing effort on the North Alaska Peninsula targeted sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka. The 2019 commercial salmon harvest on the North Alaska Peninsula was 3,874 Chinook O. tshawytscha, 2,400,781 sockeye, 42,448 coho O. kisutch, 578,038 pink O. gorbuscha, and 231,144 chum O. keta salmon. The North Peninsula Chinook Salmon harvest was above the 10-year average of 2,021 fish. The sockeye salmon harvest in the Northern District of 2,395,165 fish was above the 2009-2018 average harvest of 2,042,729 fish. Of the Northern District harvest, 99% of sockeye salmon (2,393,847 fish) were harvested in the sections between Nelson Lagoon and Outer Port Heiden. The North Alaska Peninsula chum salmon harvest of 231,144 fish was above the 10-year average of 172,181 chum salmon, with nearly all (185,872 fish) of the harvest occurring in the Northwestern District. In the Northern District, chum salmon harvest was largely incidental to targeted sockeye salmon fisheries. The total exvessel value of all North Peninsula fisheries is estimated to be $21.3 million. The majority of the value of the North Peninsula fisheries is made up of sockeye salmon harvested in the Northern District ($20.1 million).
